Thanks for walking through the L*a*b* stuff ... as I'm colourblind (especially red-green, but other issues also), I have to be extra careful not to break my photos' colours as I dig into my editing mojo ... this seems to be a wonderful tool in the toolbox.

Glad this was helpful! I have been planning this tutorial for a while. Also, if color blindness is a difficulty for you, check your histogram and RGB parade to help with verifying whether an issue has a red green shift.

is there a easier way to just select an object (leaf) for a mask instead of selecting everything?
@jacobswing
@jacobswing 10 күн бұрын
@@filifilms the short answer is no. RT has the local adjustments tool which gives a circle or rectangle mask but you can't adjust those masks into the shape of a leaf. I just came out with a tutorial on the local adjustments tool here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWO6aYiPmdhnmLMfeature=shared Usually I make my adjustments, export a PNG and then open the PNG in GIMP or Photoshop. If you want to mask something within a RAW editing software package, check out Darktable. That program has the ability to make custom masks and it's free just like Rawtherapee

You can also use Color Balance RGB. Don't think one is strictly better than the other, but they do give slightly different looks.

I just want to be able to sort by date - the newest at the top - so I don't have to go fishing for where my new images are in the browser. Is there a way to do that? - edit: found it.
@jacobswing
@jacobswing 12 күн бұрын
Yes this is a great question and I am glad you found the answer. I am going to write it out here just in case anyone else has that same question. To sort images by name, date, exif data, rank, or color label, right click in the file browser image window and go down to the sort files menu. Here you can choose any of the above mentioned properties as sorting criteria. You can also sort by these properties in ascending or descending order.

@@jacobswing I'm trying to find a replacement for lightroom on desktop, and i'm just not getting the colors I want. I dont know what's going on. I picked up a used Olympus EM-1 and comparing it to my Ricoh GRIII . SOOC the GR is perfect (With enough light) and colors on EM1 are dull. My iPhone 11 looks better. I'm trying to start from scratch and build up from a standard profile to see where it goes sideways and how to get the colors I want. I shoot family and photos and I'm just looking for great skin tones from the GR but with some extra color pop that you get from film simulations.

Thanks. Clear, succinct. Is there a way to make the mouse cursor more obvious? I lose it sometimes. Can the processing profile be changed and applied to all photos? What profile do you use, or customize?
@jacobswing
@jacobswing Ай бұрын
I'll have to check into something to help with the mouse browser. Yes, to apply the processing profile to all photos, you would just need to select all photos and then select the processing profile. Its all about which photos are selected when you are apply edits while batch processing. I personally like to start with a neutral processing profile, edit that to my liking and then apply it across the rest of my photos from that shoot. But the standard RT tone curve and processing profiles are usually a pretty good place to start.

Vibrance +20 is better than Saturation +20
@jacobswing
@jacobswing Ай бұрын
It depends. Vibrance is just saturation without skin tones. I find the best result is a mixture of both. But that's my personal opinion. Do you only use vibrance?

Do you ever take an image from RT to GIMP, make some edits, and then send it back to RT for more work? Or do you do all your RT work first, and send it to GIMP to finish your edits?
@jacobswing
@jacobswing Ай бұрын
That is a possibility. My usual workflow is to open an image in RT, edit all the colors the way that I like, then open the image in GIMP and do any corrections (like hair or blemish removal), then any final color tweaks. If you do want to send an image back to RT make sure you save a lossless image (either a tiff without any compression or an EXR file) otherwise it doesn't make sense to open your image in RT again because the RAW data would be compressed and unusable. I hope that makes sense.

So, I now know how to sort my photos, great tutorial. The second time I open RT what should I do? What's a custom profile? What's the best way to get started with remedial editing? How many important steps have I missed in posing either of those topics? Yep - total newbie that wants to learn, I have some great raw material from world travel. Some technical stuff leaves me baffled and frustrated. Thanks!

@jacobswing

The Lumix G85 is a great camera! When you turn on noise reduction, you need to be at the 1:1 zoom ratio (its a little button at the bottom of the image window). You then need to increase the the luminance slider in order to start adding noise reduction.
