Much of the disrespect shown towards Lemieux was ethnic bigotry from non-French speaking Canadians.

That sauce pass from Gretz is the perfect encapsulation of why he racked up so many points. He could've moved a little further out and passed it more laterally to avoid Roy's stick. But that would've meant more chance of him being stick checked, the pass being deflected, and the angle of the pass not being quite right for Lemieuxs shot. He made the perfect decision and the perfect pass for that situation. It's those little things that add up to so many points.

I just found out that the ice and the boards are white when there aren't a billion ads painted everywhere. Whoa
@steve88039 ай бұрын
Yeah, but now top guys are getting paid $10+million a year. Lemieux got paid $1.5M in '88. Inflation adjusted that'd be about $3.3M. I am sure guys back then would skate on ads all day long if you tripled their pay!
@Nhamp20004 ай бұрын
Now all the boards are TV screens. I don't know how the players focus. I wonder how long before they find a way to have a massive jumbotron under the ice itself. It'll be nothing but commercials with a hockey game taking place.
@jimgray33464 ай бұрын
@@Nhamp2000 You know someone suggested that hockey broadcasts should have a night mode where the ice is switched to black so it hurts the eyes less at night. Would also be good if they had an option for premium broadcasts that eliminated every ad. There's all sorts of ways to make the NHL more watchable. As it is I'd rather go down to the local rink and watch the midgets or the seniors play for free and get an authentic experience. Sad.
@Nhamp20004 ай бұрын
@@jimgray3346 That is sad. Dark mode? Some of my favorite sports pictures are of hockey players, especially in the old days before mandated helmets. Goalies back then were not taller. Most of them were shorter. Patrick Roy, Mike Liut (both 6'2"), Tom Barrasso, Ron Hextall (both 6'3") were considered very tall in the 1980's. Most of the top goalies were about 5'8"-5'10" like Andy Moog, Mike Vernon, Grant Fuhr, Billy Smith, and Don Beaupre.

Hard to compare different eras. Today training, conditioning, technology, strategy is so much better. I totally agree with you that the holding and hooking where so bad back then, and worse in the 90s. It was perfectly acceptable to just be water skiing behind a guy.

Yeah, he was incredible. Had Mario (or Orr for that matter) stayed healthy and played as many games, he might have outscored Gretzky. People can talk about Crosby, Ovie, and the new generation of superstars, McDavid, Makar for D, and as great as they are, they're just not in the same class as Gretzky, Lemieux, and Orr.
@chelious197311 ай бұрын
I disagree. Crosby and McDavid def are. Eras matter.
@mfornelos11 ай бұрын
You are right, eras matter. Lemieux played in an era with clutching, hooking, slashing and so on. Watch one of Lemieux's games and you will be able to count 2-4 penalties a shift against him. If you put a 6'5, 240 pound Lemieux in todays game where they cant do half the things to him that they use to. He'd regularly have 200+ point seasons. @chelious1973
@chelious197311 ай бұрын
@@mfornelos I watched Lemieux whole career. Watched almost every game. Grew up in Pittsburgh and lived there until 2003. Did you watch him? Watched Gretzky, lemieux, Crosby, and McDavid. No Lemieux wouldn’t put up 200pts in todays game. Its a much harder league to score in. I agree on Lemieux on how great he is. Yes, if healthy some of Gretzkys records would have fallen. But you cannot equate more powerplays with a automatic uptake in point totals. Yes power-play points are more plentiful. But 5v5 scoring is way down from Lemieux’s hey day.
@xx11xx11xx11 ай бұрын
@@chelious1973 you think crosby is on the same level as Lemieux and Gretzky? There's no way crosby is a top 3 player all time lol
@chelious197311 ай бұрын
@@xx11xx11xx I don’t think so, i know so. In my opinion the dead puck era had some dangerous hitting also. Moroso than the 80s due to the crackdown on fighting. I watched Gretzky, Lemieux, Crosby, and now McDavids whole careers. Just missed Orrs so I cannot speak on him. Saw him some at the end there but that's about it. Those five guys are considered the modern day generational talents. You might be able to put Bedard there but we will see. Crosby compares very well with those mentioned. On par would be a understatement. Crosby in his prime averaged 1.61 ppg for his three prime years in the dead puck era. That is incredible. What would a 25 year old Crosby do in todays NHL where scoring is much easier to come by? People forget Crosby missed his three prime years with injury where he was on pace for a couple 130-140 pt seasons. He averaged 1.68ppg at his peak in a much lower scoring era. Adjusted for era that would equate to 150-160pts in todays NHL. If he did would this even be a argument? Orr put Crosby on the same level as Orr, Lemieux, Gretzky, Howe. Said he belongs in that group. Who are we to argue with him? Crosby at 25 had a career ppg of 1.42ppg in a much lower scoring era. McDavid now sits at 1.50 ppg. Adjusted for era Crosby is slightly higher at 1.51ppg. At his peak his ppg was at 1.68ppg. McDavid is at 1.88. Adjusted for era it would be 1.91 in todays NHL. What would these guys do in the 1980s? Destroy that is what they would do. Utterly and completely. It would be like an Alien was on the ice from another planet. Era matters. People forget how dominant Crosby was at his peak. I sure dont. Adjusted for era is the only way you can get a clear comparison from players from different eras. The Athletic did a 99 poll where they put Crosby 4th all time in the modern era, or post 1967. They adjusted each players projected wins and adjusted ppg averages. Lemieux was at 1.65ppg, Gretzky was at 1.61 ppg, McDavid was at 1.51 and Crosby at 1.47 ppg with Orr coming in at 1.36ppg. No one player is even close to these five in ppg. Crosby if not for injury would most likely have 10 one hundred point seasons by now. Three or more 130-140 pts seasons included. This is in the dead puck era. His 1.61 ppg peak is more than 25 percent higher than his next closest competition. Which was Malkin at 1.2ppg. He was on pace for 130-140 pt seasons while Malkin and Ovechkin was on pace for 100. Sedin won that year with 104pts, Crosby was on pace for 140. That is a 30-40 pt difference. For 3 years straight. Comparable to the way Gretzky and Lemieux dominated at their peaks. And Crosby plays a much more complete 200ft game. Five Crosbys would defeat five Gretzkys 10 out of 10 times due to Crosbys defensive game. There is that aspect to consider. Gretzky was the best passer, Lemieux scorer and Crosby with his 200 ft game. His ability to cycle down low and anticipate the play is un matched. His hand eye is also the best I have ever seen. And that includes Gretzky and Lemieux.

Looks like this is a bit of an exaggeration. His best 10 game stretch he collected 37 points, at the start of the 1988-89 season. If anyone wants a comparison, Gretzky had 37 points in a 10 game stretch in the 1981-82 season, 39 points in a 10 game stretch in the 1983-84 season, and a career best 40 points in a 10 game stretch later in the 1983-84 season. Gretzky and Lemieux each hit 30 points in 10 game stretches at other points, but those are all the times they got to 37 or more. Lemieux's fastest 45 points happened in a stretch of 13 games, spanning from the end of the 1987-88 season into the 1988-89 season.
