When I first saw this in theaters as a teen, I couldn't stand the sheer fucking cringe from seeing all of the characters' unenthused reactions as this scene happened. Personally, I love the horribly saccherine song, though I suppose it makes sense that all these characters from "the real world" wouldn't appreciate the absurd weirdness that is suddenly happening in front of them.

Must say this but I have a theory here, not sure whether to call this a fan theory, conspiracy theory, etc. and it goes all the way back to Wonka's origin. I think that Roald Dahl faced trouble where he had kids in his school that were always disrespectful and misbehaving leaving him feel like the only one who was following the rules and it badly annoyed him. And so, it lead the part in the original book like this where one out of four kids follow the rules and eventually becoming the winner + created different crazy fates for each of the naughty children on what he thought they deserved based on those surrounding him from his childhood. It just totally makes sense to me! Most authors base their plots on real life experiences! Plus, this is something I myself went through for real! I felt like everyone but me was following the teachers rules. Especially when I got to middle school + my high school biology class.
