Hi. What would you suggest to insulate the internal walls of a 1890s house with solid brick wall at the front of house and chalk at the rear all with lime mortar. Need to figure out how to insulate to keep building control happy. Any ideas would be amazing..could I use hempcrete blocks for downstairs up to maybe waist height and then button off the walls, insulate with wool and then board over with hemspan board? Then lime plaster it all..would this be OK? Does it matter if I use non breathable materials on the inside party walls as they're always going to be dry as never exposed..any I thinking in some sort of correct way or am I completely wrong. Thanks .

@vinylspinner87 Hi yes you could use hemp bricks but that could eat into your floor space. Have you seen our video interview about spraying onto old buildings? I worked on some 400 year old buildings that had about 120mm sprayed directly onto the walls. I would recommend having a chat with Graham Durrant about other options too, he's very knowledgeable and the UK expert in hempcrete, he does consultations for a very reasonable price too. You can get in touch with him through hemplimespray.co.uk mention we sent you.

@maryannferrara9897 Ah ok, we don't know anything about pricing in the US. Here it was about £2500 for the hemp and £5000 for the lime. Including the timber it was probably about £10000 for materials of the walls. Another saving is that it can be done by anyone, so removing a lot of labour costs associated with brick building (concrete isn't too common for houses in UK)

This is super inspiring and I will share it. I love this and will build a home from hempcrete as well! I think the lights on the outside of the house are ingenious, as you can't change the lime. It looks great. My dream home is made from hempcrete and has geothermal and solar energy to power the heating/cooling and electricity. Heated driveway and heated floors as well. Sunroom/greenroom would be nice to have as well, although that obviously wouldn't be hempcrete. It's really cool what you can do do with homes these days to be more sustainable. The idea of a sustainable, smart home made by and powered by the earth will be a dream come true some day for me. Thank you guys for doing this and inspiring me and others!

I'm building in a similar fashion but using rice husk and coconut coir that is free at my place in the Philippines. It makes sense for me since my place is on limestone and we have a persistent tall grass that can be used to fire a Lime Kiln. I expect to spend $500 on labor producing all of my cement. We will first erect a bamboo framework that will become completely encased. The bamboo will be treated with quicklime that also contains ash from the fuel. The caustic nature of quicklime and ash should prevent insect damage.

Cost varies depending on if you do it yourself with the help of friends or pay a company to do it. To do the house we have just built (on our channel) it would have cost about £30k but 2 of us did it for less than half that. In the full interview Graham states that he is really competing with material costs and still gets 80% of the jobs he quotes for so it can't be too much, if any, more expensive than the "conventional" materials. There are building control companies that are OK with it, and they really only care about the inuslative properties, hempcrete is more than good enough.

Hi, thanks for following along. The episodes on Matts have slowed a little but will be picking them up again soon, he's been busy completing the bedroom and doing a bit of gardening and snagging. Paint was used for both look and added protection for the lime render. He may try a bit of adding powder into the mix for inside, but as the house is in quite an exposed location it was best to go with a little more protection from the elements on the outside. He's also used some lime wash inside which looks really good, so you'll be seeing a bit of that in future episodes 🍻

My mate invented a render spraying machine that could be operated with one man. I'm sure it could be modified slightly and used for this. When I build my home I'm going to use spray hemp. I'd like to build a dome but they're hard to get council approval.
@thelowcarbonproject
@thelowcarbonproject 5 ай бұрын
These machines were actually modified render machines originally. They're made in france specifically for hempcrete now. It is possible (and has been done) to operate this with one man but would be slow going. Hemp domes are complicated because of waterproofing issues, the lime render isn't good enough at protecting it, on the non vertical sides and could damage the hempcrete in places without it being obvious. They haven't been tested long enough to prove they work yet.

@@thelowcarbonproject True, but in the case of clay panels the opposite could happen, which is not good given how much water the clay absorbs and could cause it to stratify badly. @antosmer 😊 Thanks very much. And yes drying too fast can be a bad thing, an added bonus of the permanent shuttering is less waste and less tamping, which also means less hempcrete used and can then be utilised elsewhere. We did an internal feature wall with the extra hemp and lime we had left over
@LoveFoundation33
@LoveFoundation33 4 ай бұрын
@@antosmer I'm looking into a similar solution with the woodwool boards for internal shuttering of a hempcrete wall. Sure they must add drying time, but no sure how much, this material is very hygroscopic adsorb a lot of water, up to 90% of its mass. Plus they are very vapor open meaning they will permit drying along the vapor gradient as long as atmospheric conditions are favourable. Would be interesting to do a test to compare clay to wood in this use. My architect added an extra dimension to the debate by saying these would add extra resistance to compression and tension loads making the timber frame better able to handle high winds and earthquakes.
