Yes it is but not as much as it could / should be. When hand placing, we use east Yorkshire henp but with spraying, they use hemp from france. That stuff is actually horse bedding and can be purchased from lots of places in the UK.

Can we do hempcrete on a steel frame?

You could but it would have to be painted and would cost a lot more than a timber frame. We recently did a historical building that was strapped together with painted steel but that was just reinforcement on the old stone and bricks

It's not structural, so high rise would be difficult. There is one recently completed, which was 12 floors and reinforced with concrete blocks in Cape Town. It would be good to use as insulation on pretty much any building as well.

Hi there, loving the series so far! Great job. Quick Q: why did you choose to paint? Purely esthetical or also protective? I saw some other hemp builders throwing in some coloured powder into the plaster. Also seemed to work! But your house looks great!
@thelowcarbonproject
@thelowcarbonproject 26 күн бұрын
Hi, thanks for following along. The episodes on Matts have slowed a little but will be picking them up again soon, he's been busy completing the bedroom and doing a bit of gardening and snagging. Paint was used for both look and added protection for the lime render. He may try a bit of adding powder into the mix for inside, but as the house is in quite an exposed location it was best to go with a little more protection from the elements on the outside. He's also used some lime wash inside which looks really good, so you'll be seeing a bit of that in future episodes 🍻

My mate invented a render spraying machine that could be operated with one man. I'm sure it could be modified slightly and used for this. When I build my home I'm going to use spray hemp. I'd like to build a dome but they're hard to get council approval.
@thelowcarbonproject
@thelowcarbonproject Ай бұрын
These machines were actually modified render machines originally. They're made in france specifically for hempcrete now. It is possible (and has been done) to operate this with one man but would be slow going. Hemp domes are complicated because of waterproofing issues, the lime render isn't good enough at protecting it, on the non vertical sides and could damage the hempcrete in places without it being obvious. They haven't been tested long enough to prove they work yet.

Remarkable! I've been wondering for a while whether you can use a clay or terracruda panel, but I'm afraid your solution is better depending on the required mechanical properties and factors such as water absorption that may alter the drying values of the hempcrete

@@thelowcarbonproject True, but in the case of clay panels the opposite could happen, which is not good given how much water the clay absorbs and could cause it to stratify badly. Your solution is also better from a structural point of view. And afterwards you could plaster it in clay. Congratulations great work

@antosmer 😊 Thanks very much. And yes drying too fast can be a bad thing, an added bonus of the permanent shuttering is less waste and less tamping, which also means less hempcrete used and can then be utilised elsewhere. We did an internal feature wall with the extra hemp and lime we had left over
@LoveFoundation33
@LoveFoundation33 29 күн бұрын
@@antosmer I'm looking into a similar solution with the woodwool boards for internal shuttering of a hempcrete wall. Sure they must add drying time, but no sure how much, this material is very hygroscopic adsorb a lot of water, up to 90% of its mass. Plus they are very vapor open meaning they will permit drying along the vapor gradient as long as atmospheric conditions are favourable. Would be interesting to do a test to compare clay to wood in this use. My architect added an extra dimension to the debate by saying these would add extra resistance to compression and tension loads making the timber frame better able to handle high winds and earthquakes.

Hi Jamie, just regular 12mm plasterboard. Bit of a cost saving. ceiling doesn't really need to be breathable and Matt would have had to use lime on woodwool board and he didn't fancy that over his head. More chance of getting burns on skin. Looks great. Will you have a Vapour control layer on the inside of the walls ? It there any issue with interstitial condensation in this wall build-up?
@thelowcarbonproject
@thelowcarbonproject 4 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks. No need for vapour barrier, the hempcrete deals with all that itself. The walls "breath" and can take in and expel any moisture on their own. They balance the humdity inside the house keeping it at a nice healthy level for humans. The walls are about 370mm thick, with timber frame to the inside which helps aswell. Looking in the hempcrete book it seems that cavities are where condensation can be an issue and this is a monolithic wall without any cavities. Good question, we'll add this into our next Q+A episode and Matt can try going into it a bit more, he learnt quite a bit about that when we were insulating the loft / attic and will also be doing a full episode on insulation in the future.
