Thank you for not wasting my time and explaining an awesome Dylan tune. Being able to teach something so quick yet thorough is a skill.

Getting 8 tracks onto a 1/8" piece of tape running at 3.75ips comes at a massive sacrifice of fidelity. Some people like that. I used to have the rackmounted 388 Syncassette back in the 90's before going to ADATs and then ultimately a DAW. With great power becomes great responsibility - and when people tracked to tape the tendency wasn't to overcorrect performances. That, to me, was the advantage. It certainly wasn't the dynamic / frequency range.

In terms of investing in yourself - I’ve used a Focusrite interface for over a decade and I work with music professionally I always said “can’t justify converters are pretty much the same” and I finally got myself an RME interface I had been looking at for YEARS. And I was flabbergasted with the immense improvement even just what the monitors revealed but also every mic I own sounded better - which in turn boosts my confidence and excitement working on music. Now I’m staring into a rabbit hole of 500 series gear but am tugging my own sleeve not to jump. I will try to rent something to make sure I don’t spend another decade missing out though!

@travisraab for sure! Do you have any idea of what he does there? It almost sounds like he hits the high e string? It’s in that G to C/G part after the 2 verse I think.

All examples sounded great, for me analog delay into overdrive was my favorite. Its got the chaos of Psychobilly and that sloppyness is desirable for that style of music. If i was playing country or 1950s music then yes overdrive first for sure. Thannks for this video, gives me things to try out differently than i usually do. My amp can be clean or overdriven but doesnt have an fx loop.

The Yamaha MT series is awesome. I used an MT2X for 10 years, it sounded amazing. I upgraded to a Fostex 8 track, and things sounded worse as a result. 😀 I think the Yamahas imposes a sound on everything that makes it really easy to mix, without making it sound cheap.

It doesn't make a difference for someone who's an amateur or a semi-pro. If you are at a mediocre skill level it won't make you sound like a pro. A pro can make average equipment sound good, but A pro can make great equipment sound incredible. Once you get to a pro-level, incremental improvements makes a difference. The difference between the best PG in the NBA and the least good PG is incremental compared to the difference between the least good PG and the best semi-pro point guard. There's an ocean of difference between the latter two, but you can't tell the difference unless you really know what to look for. Expensive gear makes a difference once you get to a certain level as a pro. Until you get to that level, it's not what is going to make the difference. It's not going to turn you into a pro from a semi-pro. You have to have the skill level.

Who is a semi pro? Who is a pro?
@smilyle15 күн бұрын
@travisraab I'd say people who went to school for engineering and musical performance and production who've proven through general consensus that they have a talent hundreds of thousands to millions or people want to consistently hear. A semi-pro is a fairly talented musician that doesn't have extensive formal training or that hasn't established themselves as a prolific talent within the music industry

Good video. I am a singer songwriter. I was tired of travelling with all these pedals. Paying extra at airports etc so I sold all my pedals recently. Researched a bit and have found the perfect guitar rig (for me). Here it is if it helps anyone. Guitar -> DI Box (optional) ->Audio Interface -> Laptop (Neural DSP Plug-in) You can use a foot switch pedalboard to control the plug-in. I am planning to do automation on my backing track for so my guitar changes effects automatically. With this setup, I can record and release high quality music and also play live gigs with not worrying about having a good sound engineer at a venue. If anybody has a simpler rig, please let me know

Liked and Subscribed my friend - - - Thank you - great to see other old-school Tascam fans like myself - first one for me was the model 144 portaStudio, then the 244 with those super-cool "quasi-parametric" EQ, (stacked, volume 15 db and sweepable freq) then the 388~ I can't believe to see this old wonder in your studio. I have a small pile of reels runing at 7 1/2 IPS or 15 IPS if I recall - would love to get my hands on that unit again just to remember what all these tapes have for songs from the late 80's! Thank you! Just got the Model 24 and learning everything before even getting into it now. Wonderful machine and you're so right about the manuals being well made - always for all their units. Cheers from Geoff in Hamilton, Ont. Canada!

Analog absolutely improves sound and mixes in general if you know what you’re doing. Hybrid for the win. But Learn with the analog modeled plugins first. They sound 95% of the way there
