I don't have twitch, so it's awesome you've decided to upload your streams here! I loved watching your design process and also hearing your nuggets of wisdom about what makes a good case study. I'm in the middle of writing one right now and have done the "level 1" strategy.. Going to rethink my approach now! xx

Everything happens for a reason. Please take your time to reflect on what you’d like to do next. This is life, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with you. I hope this layoff becomes a stepping stone to making you a stronger person and an even better designer. We believe in you-keep going! Also, please continue sharing your amazing design videos. Thank you again for all your teachings.

Omg you're the 1st person I've seen about layoffs that talk about parents. I work in big tech as a swe and financially take care if them as well. I truly appreciate your vulnerability here. Honestly if it was just about me I'd appreciate the break to travel and chill and get a job at a restaurant or something outside corporate but my family...I'm their retirement even if they don't want it to be that way. My company has monthly layoffs so we never really know 🤷🏾‍♀️ rumors swirling on blind say another big round is coming soon 😒 Best of luck to you and your journey. Thx for working on figma it's really assisted me and my team 🙏🏿

is it true that for a product, they may need a UI designer for 3 months, and once it is done, they don't need the person for another 1 to 2 years, until they need the v2 of the product. So they may hire a contractor... even for software engineers, they hire contractors now. What I think is: when society has a system to provide people with bonus, 401k retirement plan, life insurance, health insurance, holidays, vacation, the company will make a move, like in a chess game, to get rid of all of them. Well, then, common people. They have made a chess move. What can we do for our chess move?

Not sure if this workflow works, but it does it would be huge for you. Buy Image Tracer plugin for Figma, it cost pennies. Trace the images and pop them into recraft AI, set recraft AI to vector and similarity to 100% and hit generate and export the vector. It might even be possible to skip the Image Trace step. You will like recraft cause you get a canvas like figma.

I just lost my remote IT job too on 12/3. Two weeks ago and I'm still trying to think and process the whole situation. Do not worry about the gap on resumes, right now in Tech, these layoffs are everywhere. We're all feeling it. I'm planning on jumping on the job-hunt after the 1st of the year and new business budgets open up possibilities for new hires. Hang in there! It'll be ok <3

I was in the same boat last year and I took a long break and took an equal amount of time looking for a new job, and even though I'm working in the org that I've always wanted to work in I'm finding myself second guessing myself. Just like you I was also supporting my parents (though they had their pension), and they did not understand that it wasn't just easy to get employment and I had to pay them out of my dwindling savings. I wish it was simple but even now I'm still processing losing my previous job.

was the company also Canada based? Would be surprising for a US company to lay off Canadians right now given CAD weakness

I assume and have friends who are in Canada and work for a US based company remotely making USD and spending CAD as living expenses. It would be very difficult now to replace a US remote job earning USD at US market rates while living in Canada.

This is my third year in a row being laid off, and with the first layoff, my confidence was rocked so badly. I felt like my work wasn't good enough, which led to the layoff. Thankfully my colleagues, seniors and manager reminded me that was not the case at all. All throughout my time with them, they told me that my work exceeded their expectations, I was learning at such a fast pace they felt they had to push me for a promotion within a year. I've learnt after talking to senior leaders and others who have more insight into how the layoffs happen, it's a mix of numbers, ego from leadership by pushing others to layoff as many or as much as their team did etc. Nothing is done at a personal level, it's just the luck of the draw. After my first layoff, my mindset towards working changed so much. I no longer wanted work to be part of my identity and I wanted to spend as little time as possible of my life on it. This made the subsequent layoffs feel less cold and hurtful. I used to feel so much shame and guilt, but now I'm able to get angry at layoffs and negotiate a better severance package for myself. Having more years of experience now also makes it easier to job hunt. This time around, I started to hear back from way more job applications, get invited to more technical interviews. Of course there's a sea of rejection too, but I feel more hopeful this time that I'll be able to find a new role quicker. Your video verbalised so much of what I felt the first time I experienced a layoff, and I wanted to let you know that focusing on the things that give your life purpose and joy, that's how you'll best move on from this situation. A phrase that stuck with me that has given me a boost is "Do not cling to the setback. Focus on the potential.", I shifted my mind away from the loss of a job, and to the gain of time to spend on things I wanted to but couldn't or didn't make time for.

oof things are uncertain now, now is exactly the best time to look because your competition will be significantly down. once the new year kicks in it'll be full on pandemonium again for job competition. You're competeing with AI now, consider this thoughtfully, not just for your position but for it to read your CV. It's relatable af having parents who make you their retirement plan, very common... but the fact you've never been unemployed tells me that you're not really living in the current job climate, I'm 40, things have never been worse in my lifetime when it comes to acquiring a job in our industry. AI really did a number on things - keep your wits about you, you'll need every ounce of ingenuity to stand out. I felt bad about how cold you were treated, its likely the person firing you was AI driven. Remember, no corporation cares about you, they care about money. This seems doomer, because the climate is doom right now. Sorry if its harsh, but you need to be in reality right now. the comment alone will help your channel, if nothing else.

you should not be your parents retirement plan. They should have saved something themselves, its on them if they didnt. Especially the last generation that had the opportunity to buy houses/apartments 20 years ago for 10% or less of what they are today.

Not necessarily an option for everyone. Especially in Asian countries it’s culturally expected for parents to depend on their children so companies and governments don’t need to actually provid or incentivize pensions

@tianlechen she's not in an Asian country. If they bring their Asian views to a non Asian country that's not set up for it, they're going to make their daughters life a living hell when it could otherwise be great.

I feel you, sis-I was laid off over a year ago, so I deeply empathize with your concerns. It’s tough, but it’s also been a chance for me to get introspective. If there’s one thing I’ve realized, it’s this: we are so much more than our job titles -we are so much more interesting than our job titles! I spent nearly seven years in graphic design, which gave me stability and a comfortable lifestyle. But over time, I felt like I was hitting a ceiling-working for decision-makers (often old, cis white men with outdated strategies) who didn’t fully value the creativity and innovation I brought to the table. When I got laid off, it forced me to ask myself: What’s next? I wanted a career that truly aligned with my character, interests, and values. So, I decided to take this time to invest in myself-and now, I’m pursuing my master’s degree at a prestigious business school in France! 🇫🇷 It’s exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. My savings are dwindling, and the thought of student debt looms large. But honestly? I’m moving forward fearlessly because, at this point, there’s nothing left to lose-only everything to gain. To anyone going through this: trust in your potential and remember you are capable of so much more than your circumstances might suggest.

I've been in tech for over a decade. I was working remotely for years, traveling all over Asia and living full time in multiple countries for a year or two at a time. Recently, I've moved to Austin where I want to settle down. Spent a few days applying to jobs because my current company (startup) isn't looking so hot. I have over ten interviews lined up. So I don't think it is as bad as a lot of people on social media are saying. You should get into DevOps / SRE work. As AI becomes more and more prominent, I think that DevOps and sort of really broad roles that require a lot of knowledge in different verticals (linux, cloud, networking, application development, databases, maybe physical work like racking and wiring up servers, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, APM / visibility via metrics and log aggregation, the list is legitimately endless) will remain relatively insulated. It too will be impacted, but I don't think it will be completely gutted for another 10+ years. Developers that call themselves "frontend" or "backend", and even beyond that, folks that only know a single frontend framework like react, next, angular, liveview, etc, or the same for a single backend language like Go, Python, etc, they're in big trouble I think. The harsh truth is that in many cases, these types of 0.1x engineers that have a very narrow and shallow knowledge of making a technical business work are actually a drag on the tech economy and a soon-to-be unnecessary redundancy in many tech companies. Speed limits exist because without them, some people would do 110MPH next to a school. Businesses are starting to see a lot of developers as redundancies because a lot of them do 2 hours of work per week and are useless to the business outside of their narrow band of expertise. That being said, layoffs suck. Losing your job sucks. But it isn't armageddon if you have a really robust work ethic - the industry is correcting itself and is going to shed a lot of the dead-weight that it has accumulated over the past decade. As long as you trust the person in the mirror and work your ass off, you'll be fine. You're young, you're beautiful, you are talented and intelligent, and you'll find your way soon enough.
