As someone who got laid off by the mouse: 1) the gap in your resume will be fine! Everyone understands a lay off isn't your fault and was out of your control. 2) File for unemployment. That is money for you that you have been paying into. It won't be used unless you use it so use it. 3) The first one is always the hardest because of that "coldness" you felt. It is the disconnect that the company doesn't feel the same way about you that you do of it. For "type-a" folks it can be a particularly hard blow since in school authority figures want to build you up and care about your success but your job doesn't and will never. REMEMBER THAT. 4) Apply/look for jobs daily BUT for a limited time (1 hr at most) use the rest of the time for you! Remember, You are going to be fine. Your job is not your life and you are not your job.

FYI people get laid off at this time of year usually to avoid giving them bonus's or so that the ceos can have a larger bonus.

Omg you're the 1st person I've seen about layoffs that talk about parents. I work in big tech as a swe and financially take care if them as well. I truly appreciate your vulnerability here. Honestly if it was just about me I'd appreciate the break to travel and chill and get a job at a restaurant or something outside corporate but my family...I'm their retirement even if they don't want it to be that way. My company has monthly layoffs so we never really know 🤷🏾‍♀️ rumors swirling on blind say another big round is coming soon 😒 Best of luck to you and your journey. Thx for working on figma it's really assisted me and my team 🙏🏿

When I got laid off, my stepmom did the exact same thing by saying “well that’s business” so I understand your pain. What helped me get back up is knowing that a job will always do what makes sense to them financially, so I really took the time to evaluate what’s important for me and sharing more of what I’m going through with a therapy and friends rather than family.

I’m so so sorry and as someone who also has parents that see me as their retirement plan, I can seriously relate with the amount of stress and pressure that you may feel. I get bald patches when I think about it sometimes. Taking this month off I feel is a great idea and spend this time making plans ❤ good luck.

thank you for sharing your experience and being vulnerable. I started a 3 month LOA 2 weeks ago, and definitely resonated with the feeling of not having anything on your calendar and really having space for yourself. I didn't inform any of my family (Chinese) about my LOA, as far as they know, I'm still working my 9-5; I also support them financially (pay for half the mortgage). I'm fortunate enough to have enough saved and living below my means such that they wouldn't even notice any blimp on money flow and my spending habits. Because of this setup, I have the workweek to myself, I can do whatever I want during this time. And it's magical. Good on you for supporting your fam, use this gap on yourself! Rooting for you

i was also laid off from my remote management job earlier this year. i had been with the company for going on my tenth year, and my manager (whom i had also worked with directly for six of those years!) very coldly laid me off with help from an HR rando. neither one turned their camera on. it all happened very quickly, and to be honest with you several months later i'm still mentally healing from the experience. i don't think it really matters how often you've had this happen to you- getting laid off is deeply traumatic because ultimately your time, labor, and loyalty are discarded and reduced to a "business decision". i can relate to all of the emotions you're describing here so well- especially the overwhelming feeling of being ripped away from the schedule you're accustomed to, as well as your list of unfinished tasks. as others have said, i think re-investing some of this new time back into yourself and your own well-being will be really important. take care, better things are coming 💕

I felt that, as I had a similar situation, but after just 3.5 years of work. I can hardly imagine it being after 10 years. I understand that having to tell someone they're laid off is hard, but the people involved being cold and unattached only makes it worse. Anyway, I just wanted to wish you the very best in your healing process ♥

This is what peeves me a bit. At least have the basic respect of turning on your camera if you are going to mess with people's lives like this. I understand it was a business decision, but it's the very least you can do. Its such a coward move to have the camera off to tell people this.

I hope this layoff becomes a stepping stone to making you a stronger person and an even better designer. We believe in you-keep going! Also, please continue sharing your amazing design videos. Thank you again for all your teachings.

Thank you for sharing this. I can imagine how shocking and overwhelming this experience must be, especially with the unexpected timing and the pressure of being the main support for your family. It’s completely understandable to feel lost right now. I work in tech too, and I’ve been feeling like a layoff might be coming next year. I actually went through a hypothetical “what if” plan just to mentally prepare myself. It’s not an easy thing to think about, so I really admire your strength in sharing this so openly. Take the time you need to breathe and reset. I’m sure you’ll come back stronger with even more clarity on your next steps. You’ve clearly got so much talent, and this is just one part of a bigger journey. Stay strong-I’ll be looking forward to seeing where you go next.

I just lost my remote IT job too on 12/3. Two weeks ago and I'm still trying to think and process the whole situation. Do not worry about the gap on resumes, right now in Tech, these layoffs are everywhere. We're all feeling it. I'm planning on jumping on the job-hunt after the 1st of the year and new business budgets open up possibilities for new hires. Hang in there! It'll be ok

I was in the same boat last year and I took a long break and took an equal amount of time looking for a new job, and even though I'm working in the org that I've always wanted to work in I'm finding myself second guessing myself. Just like you I was also supporting my parents (though they had their pension), and they did not understand that it wasn't just easy to get employment and I had to pay them out of my dwindling savings. I wish it was simple but even now I'm still processing losing my previous job.

you should not be your parents retirement plan. They should have saved something themselves, its on them if they didnt. Especially the last generation that had the opportunity to buy houses/apartments 20 years ago for 10% or less of what they are today.

Not necessarily an option for everyone. Especially in Asian countries it’s culturally expected for parents to depend on their children so companies and governments don’t need to actually provid or incentivize pensions

@tianlechen she's not in an Asian country. If they bring their Asian views to a non Asian country that's not set up for it, they're going to make their daughters life a living hell when it could otherwise be great.

is it true that for a product, they may need a UI designer for 3 months, and once it is done, they don't need the person for another 1 to 2 years, until they need the v2 of the product. So they may hire a contractor... even for software engineers, they hire contractors now. What I think is: when society has a system to provide people with bonus, 401k retirement plan, life insurance, health insurance, holidays, vacation, the company will make a move, like in a chess game, to get rid of all of them. Well, then, common people. They have made a chess move. What can we do for our chess move?

I almost got laid off this past month as well, I ended up getting offered another role instead within my organization, but I'll be honest I'm not sure how I feel about it. Have you tried going into analytics? I majored in CS as well and I knew from the start I didn't want to be a Software Engineer. I ended up getting a role in web analytics and enjoyed it so it's an option to look into.

oof things are uncertain now, now is exactly the best time to look because your competition will be significantly down. once the new year kicks in it'll be full on pandemonium again for job competition. You're competeing with AI now, consider this thoughtfully, not just for your position but for it to read your CV. It's relatable af having parents who make you their retirement plan, very common... but the fact you've never been unemployed tells me that you're not really living in the current job climate, I'm 40, things have never been worse in my lifetime when it comes to acquiring a job in our industry. AI really did a number on things - keep your wits about you, you'll need every ounce of ingenuity to stand out. I felt bad about how cold you were treated, its likely the person firing you was AI driven. Remember, no corporation cares about you, they care about money. This seems doomer, because the climate is doom right now. Sorry if its harsh, but you need to be in reality right now. the comment alone will help your channel, if nothing else.
