Another question, how do you get the effects running it into a distorted amp? Did you use the fx loop? Is it something on the attenuator? Normally you need to run your effects through a clean amp otherwise it will cause unwanted noises and won't sound clean, i still don't quite get how people do this.
@marcrchz3 ай бұрын
Edit: i just saw the describtion on the other video, so i see you used an fx loop on the fryette to get the effects i guess. Very interesting, i didn't know attenuators did that and always wondered how people get the effects on a cranked amp. Especially because i also know that the fx loop on the plexi is pretty much useless because it gets so much of its drive from the power stage, wich makes me wonder how the attenuator makes it work...
@anthonyjwilkerson3 ай бұрын
@marcrchz nah here's all you do. You gain your amp, you set the delay for the setting you hear in this video. Should go guitar>flanger>phaser>delay. It's set for a single repeat and very low. Too many repeats and it will muddy up the signal. So basically it's just barely on. Eddie switches it on and off depending on part of the song he's playing. Mostly you hear it in Ain't Talkin Bout Love and the chorus section of On Fire. Often he will switch it on for lead stuff too. If you're getting noise, like hum or hiss that's different. That could be a grounding issue or a problem with a pedal itself. You may get some added hiss from pedals that are on simply because it may just be a pedal with a high noise floor. All my pedals add a little white noise when turned on. No big deal that's normal.
@anthonyjwilkerson3 ай бұрын
@marcrchz this video was before I had the fryette. The verb in this video is just the room I'm playing in. The delay is just in front of the amp. On the video with the Fryette, I have a Boss Reverb the loop. The reason that works is because "basically" what the Fryette does is "reamps" your amp. The fryette is basically a power amp with a load box built in. So you turn up the Marshall just like in this but it's just hitting a load box basically, so the marshall essentially becomes a big preamp. The Fryette has so much headroom available that it won't distort the effects loop unless you crank it's volume all the way too. I hope that's making sense. It's very similar idea of having a clean amp and running a distortion pedal with a delay after it. Just sort of glorified.
@marcrchz3 ай бұрын
@@anthonyjwilkerson Yep, makes sense. With a delay you can sort of get away with it in front of an amp, the verb you need a clean signal.
@marcrchz3 ай бұрын
I wanna add The Fryette is definitely an impressive piece of gear, i tried the SV20 for the third time now but couldn’t get satisfying tones, but i also always run a clean amp and then get my distortion with pedals (Ds1 + tube screamer), wich the plexi without a master volume isn’t great for. I think the SV20 just has less gain than the JCM800 or Silver Jubilee. Would be interesting to try out a fryette with a plexi

Are those 8 ohm or 15 ohm EVH Greenbacks?

@marcrchz 15 ohm. It's the standard EVH 4x12 Cabinet they sell.
@marcrchz3 ай бұрын
@@anthonyjwilkerson Thanks for the answer, im deciding between G12M Greenbacks and EVH Greenbacks, but 8 ohm ones. Are you familiar with the differences? I thought the EVH sounded a bit warmer and less hot, but it sounds very good in this video.
@anthonyjwilkerson3 ай бұрын
@marcrchz what kind of cab are you putting them in and what makes you want 8ohm over 15ohm?
@marcrchz3 ай бұрын
@@anthonyjwilkerson So i have a 2x12 closed marshall cab and i actually already have 2 G12M Greenbacks with 16 ohm. I already tried all the 3 20 watt studio marshalls (except the newer jtm vintage thing) but the top end is just really sharp and scratchy even tho i pretty much already turned all the tone knobs down. I thought the issue might be the speaker and i read that 16 ohm speakers are actually a lot more high end heavy and less warm, wich i also heard in videos comparing 16 ohm with 8 ohm. So i‘m now thinking of getting 8 ohm speakers parallel connected into 4 ohm, and maybe thought that the EVH 20 watts would be better than the G12M. Still unsure though
@anthonyjwilkerson3 ай бұрын
@marcrchz in my opinion the standard greenback is a VERY bright speaker anyway. I think the ohms have less to do with it. The EVHs are more scooped and have a bit more bottom end. I think getting the 15ohm would be just fine and maybe a little better because you could use them in other cabinet situations since most other modern speakers are going to be 15 or 16. Also I'm halving the load of the amp. I'm running the 8ohm tap into a 16ohm cab. That to me is the secret sauce.

Something that made a HUGE difference was the 50k Mid Pot like Eddie had in his amp. Adds a slight mid boost to the overall tone. And removes some of the upper high end crash. Smooths it just slightly. I am surprised at how close that SV20H is. BTW; I didn't realize D Addario made 9-40 Balanced strings! I am using Fender 150 9-42 at the moment on my Franky. The biasing on the 6CA7s when variaced down 90v... 50MA per tube. All of that is from Dave Friedman's information when he rebuilt Eds amp. But yeah... this stuff is FUN! @motrock27 ай бұрын
@@anthonyjwilkerson I am at the understanding its the exact same circuit as its 100watt big brother. The 50k mid pot is the BIG change. Tonally with my 50watter; there is a mid frequency shift that brings it right in to that Ed "thing". Aside from more gain/saturation; that smoothing out of the "crash" is key. That breaking glass thing in the treble smooths out. Totally blew my mind when I heard the difference. George Metropoulos did the same mods with the MetroPlex MKII that I just got. The amp just sings with it. Once i get that amp paid off I am jumping all over those EVH speakers through Sweetwater. That will be the final piece of the puzzle. You could take the 5150 III to any gig and be able to get the type of tone you need in any genre because of the three channels. I love that amp and I highly recommend it, however some people seem to have reliability issues with them, but honestly you could probably say that about any amp. If you're looking for the Van Halen thing, the marshall will do a more accurate version of the first 6 records, but if you want a lot more versatility the 5150 is the way to go. It will do classic Van Halen, but also can do great cleans and super high gain stuff as well, plus it has a master volume. You could play the 5150 at bedroom levels or in an arena. I'll have to do a video on the 5150 soon.
