In terms of sharpness they are virtually identical, and there is likely more margin in error on production variation or user error. But I find the bokeh slightly more pleasing on the older 100-400 mkii in every example, likely due to the slightly wider aperture that is maintained further in the zoom range. If you already own a 100-400 mkii and 1.4 mkiii extender, the only reason to spend any money at all on the 100-500 is for the convenience of not having to attach and remove an extender, however you do get a slighly longer shot at 560mm with that combo. I feel like the slight reduction in weight is purely a trade off in terms of a less robust platic vs. metal contruction. Even high grade plastics degrade slightly over time especially when exposed to the elements, where the metal body may possibly take a little more abuse. Just depends on how hard you are on your gear maybe. With a massive gap in price, it really comes down to where your priorities lay. A skilled photographer with either option at their disposal will create virtually identical images.

Thanks for doing this comparison. I have the Sigma 60-600mm and have been contemplating getting the 1.4x Sigma teleconverter for extra reach. It doesn't seem to lose much detail. I just wonder if it will cause my Panasonic S5iix to struggle more with autofocus? I guess it depends on how many f-stops the camera can handle.

All facts. I have those adapters and they will let you down. Hope and pray it is not on a paid gig or an important shot you really need. Get rid of adapters and buy some CF cards and CF card reader. It costs more money but peace of mind is worth it.

Legally, in UK you can't connect UV light using a plug. It has to be hardwired only, hence why no plug. The pump and decorative light can be run from a plug. The 3000 pump isn't strong enough to run both the waterfall AND the fountain together. You need the 6000 or 9000 for that which comes with a separate connector.

The nuts holding the handle to the body aren't holding anything anything more, but I can't see how to get under the black plastic collar, to find and replace the loose bolts. It feels like it should just unclip somehow, but it's not obvious! Any tips?
