Brings back great memories of my school bus as a kid. Love this!
@tallboyyyy10 күн бұрын
I've never heard of Crown buses. Maybe because I'm in New England and these look to have been made in LA. My great uncle owned the local school bus company for many years. He used to buy Blue Bird and Superior and just before I graduated HS in 1983 he started buying Thomas. I didn't know until years later after he had passed away that he was the person that actually decided if a snow storm was bad enough to cancel school. The school superintendent would call him and ask if the buses could run or not. If not there was no school. I wish I had known that when I was in school.

My Father (Heriberto Brand) worked for Embree, hired directly from Mr. Weston, in the mid '70s into about '83. He would go to the station right off allen and corson st. From there, Dad worked for RTD, which later was MTA. Dad passed away in '98, couple of years before the Metro Gold Line was to open, which Dad was going to shift into that. But, he enjoyed the time with Embree, as I still remember he was my School bus driver for Jackson Elementary and Wilson jr High School. My Weston cared for his crew, as one time Dad was sick, so he came over to visit him, we only lived two blocks away, Allen/Villa.

I grew up in Westminster in the Seventies, I never actually was in a Crown bus, OVSD didn't use them, mostly Bluebirds, but HBUHSD used them, and I saw them all the time, and of course, whenever we went on field trips we'd see the LA and LB ones. I always thought Crown made the best looking school busses and fire trucks even until this day. I think Westminster, Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach all used Crown fire trucks. Even before 911, if you called one fire dept, the other two would show up as well. As a matter of fact, since we were in a corner of Westminster next to both Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach, the Westminster fire trucks were always last to our subdivision. It was really sad a few years ago when I found out Crown went out of business, and amazed that their bus design lasted for decades with only minor changes.

I was always impressed by the loud engine and heat sitting in the very back seat. I also remember hills were somewhat of challenge for these buses. The international brand buses were automatic and would eat hills up!

I bought a new center shaft bushing but I can’t seem to figure out how to get the old one out. I’ve looked online, been to Harbor Freight, Home Depot, Auto parts stores and my mechanic shop. So far, no luck. Do you have any suggestions?
@garylee9738 Жыл бұрын
@@OwnYourOwnBus101 I heated it up with a heat gun and used a slide hammer to drive it out. Put the agitator in a large vice, wrapping it with rags to keep it from getting damaged from the vice. Then get up the old splines, then use a five pound slide hammer to knock it out.

I saw what I know was an Embree bus on You Tube this morning. I could tell because, it still bore the distinctive color scheme and Windows. That bus is in England. And, the guy who bought it made it his motorhome

When I was at LAUSD ‘87-‘90 the only auto Crowns we had were the 91 pax tandems that we ran to Westchester HS they were a bit of a manual shift even though they were auto. They had a long automatic shift handle because they needed some help to get rolling. If I hadn’t left LAUSD this would be my 34th year. Miss the Crowns in every way. Now I drive charter in the Pacific NW and Canada.

Great memories; brings back the old LAUSD Crowns. In 1966 I rode #10, a stinky, smoky Hall Scott gas bus, #80, a small-engine Detroit and in 1968, #1287, a fresh out of the box 5-speed Detroit.

Crown King thank you so much for following my channel. I actually have tons of pics of my buses but video footage, no. Videos are becoming harder and harder to do because of several variables (I’m retired from SB driving, I’m not always in the west, most Crowns have been crushed, etc.). I do have some more videos coming though. I just don’t want to release them all at once. 😎

Brian - thank you so much for this amazing video. I cannot express how much I enjoyed watching it and your thoughtful commentary. What a great gift you have given so many here! I saw ol' Embree #64 that I rode for a number of years in your closing pictures - do you know what ultimately happened to it? I remember it as "64" and it appears to have been re-badged to "64E" at some point. Thank you very much.
@OwnYourOwnBus1014 жыл бұрын
Stephen Brandt You’re so welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. The re-badging happened after Mark IV took over (around the mid 80s). Unfortunately, I’m aware that most of the 60s have been crushed. The only ones I KNOW that are still out there are 63, 65 and 66. Someday I’d like to pick up these two and restore them to their original glory. They are certainly worthy of preservation.
@stephenbrandt27564 жыл бұрын
Brian, thanks for your thoughtful reply. Great to know more about the 60's, where are 63, 65 & 66 now being stored? I remember when Embree bought newer buses, maybe around the mid 70's, including I think #333, which was part of the newer fleet - I enjoyed comparing the differences between the two Crown models (more similar than different). The gentleman that drove our route was named Steve and was a wonderful person and left a lasting impression on me back then. Thanks again.
