I think you're looking for sword and sorcery fantasy. You've already read Conan, right? Drizzt is also really great. But for S&S recs in particular, you can check out Liam's Lyceum, he reads a ton of that stuff so you'd probably get some great recs there. Picking this one in particular because it looks like the one on the cover 🐕

hi there, friend f*ck the government is right! you always have such an interesting variety of books to read for your various book clubs. keep us posted on how it goes. i'm already curious to know what you think of boys enter the house and the empusium as both sound so interesting. i wish my book club had read one of these for october instead of the dumb ghost story by peter straub. i'm going to have to write these titles down for next year. my jaw almost dropped when you said you went back to that gwynne series and malazan. haha. seriously though, it's good that you are willing to go back. i wonder if you have given yourself enough time though before going back. perhaps it's too soon? a friend of mine liked red rising and gave it to me as a xmas present last year so i read it. i thought it was good for maybe young adults but i wasn't tempted to read more. at all. i keep hearing the outlaw bookseller's voice in my mind saying that you only need to read the first book in a series because the others just offer up diminishing returns. i think he's right love the sheer joy on your face when you talk about brooms. that's what a good story does. it plucks our emotional strings. i just got a notice from my library that my copy of smashed has arrive. i'm looking forward to that one based on your recommendation. it's time i read a graphic novel as it seems like forever i agree with you about nina kiriki hoffman. i liked her short work better. i read one of her novels and don't recall the title right now so that tells you something. your discussion of catalyst and how you like weird stuff reminded me of jeff vandermeer's work. you aware of him? he's a "new weird" writer and i just bought absolution, the fourth volume (sort of) of the area x series. i'm going to go against the outlaw bookseller now because area x was a series that i really enjoyed and i think the first three books are really one story divided into three parts, if you get my meaning. if you want weird, then check out area x or even better borne by vandermeer i read kitchen by banana yoshimoto a while back....or i think i did. it was short and i liked it. but why can't i recall anything about it?! will also look forward to your take on kitchen. maybe it will help me remember the story. lol death out of thin area sounds cool but the best thing is that you and your dad are reading together. how cool is that? awesome cool! i got my hands on a copy of titus awakes a few months ago but for whatever reason i put it aside and then returned it to the library without reading it. are you really going to make me take a second look? ;) as i recall crisis on infinite earths was so good. what a shame that this final crisis you read was so lackluster. then again i stopped reading comic books regularly quite a while ago. maybe that was a good thing? i would still encourage you to read the second series of the teen titans from the 80s. i have them all in a box somewhere and still remember them very fondly. great storytelling and that's what it's all about, right? thanks for putting up too much coffee right up to the camera. i was able to pause and read it. very amusing! great poem by frost. and you're right there is a kind of darkness or sadness in many of his poems. i really look forward to your poems and think it's a great idea to finish the videos that way. it's kind of your signature. well done, my friend! have a great week and talk to you on the other side cheers

hi friend Empusium was sooo good, a real slow burn eerie read, im 2nd guessing if i should use it for my book swap and just keep it. sadly im not enjoying the boys enter the house, it's really disjointing with the way it follows the victims, and reads more like a wiki page of Chicago history. honestly i dont know if ill finish it. red raising was way too YA, i cant believe all the ppl who hate on Fourth wing but praise red raising. i think the outlaw book seller is very wise and will listen to the advice about sequels lol i got the whole southren reach serise by jeff vandermeer and just gotta make room for it in my huge TBR. i Just got lent the Null A series but AE Vogt so thats gonna be my next SF series, and LOTR will be my fantasy counter. YES go back and get Titus Awake!! I feel sad just remembering the end. Im so happy you were able to read too much coffee man. ill hold one up next time. i try to give comics a break seeing how they gotta wrap up while leaving something for the next writer but when its bad its bad, and your right its all about story telling. I havent kept my book buying ban (i blame the outlaw book seller) and I'll be picking up kitchen and a few other books soon. apparently second sale on ebay thinks i buy too much and wont let me get the buy 3 get one free deal till a 10 rest, i did pick up Speak though before my ban lol thanks for making time to write, see you on the other side cheers

@@PoorPersonsBookReviewer always great to hear from you, my friend. i put empusium on my book club list so i will get to it...eventually! and, yeah, let's not talk about tbr piles. it's crazy. but in a good way ;) very happy to hear you have the southern reach series. i just picked up absolution the fourth book though when i saw vandermeer in boston at readercon about 18 months ago he said it was not really a "sequel" but a group of related stories (three). he's very creative and area x is awesome so i am willing to give it a try. as i said it's the exception that proves the rule. i will get on titus awakes as soon as i can. well, that won't wash as there is never time so i'll have to figure something out. maybe second sale has a copy? (that's funny about how they have "banned" you) yay for more coffee man! i forgot i had recommend speak to you. yes, read it. you can probably finish it in a day. SO good. i'm sure you will be able to see why teens love it. i taught it for years and years until one parent complained (it was nonsense) and then my admin got nervous and forbade me and my teaching partner from teaching it again. needless to say, i don't work at that school any longer thank the gods it's friday. i'm looking forward to the long weekend. here's hoping you have a great one cheers p.s. did i forget to include a castle? how did that happen?! here you go 🏰🏰🏰

hi there, friend. glad you went to the dentist. teeth are really important to one's health. keep going regularly if you can. i understand your frustration with voting. i've wanted to vote for a third party for the past few cycles but here in nevada the dems keep the green party off the ballot through shenanigans. it's very frustrating! they did it again this year so i couldn't vote for jill stein like i wanted. for the third cycle i voted for "none of the above." however, i really wanted to vote for the ballot initiatives which, i think, are super important your discussion of that paul tremblay book made me think of ghost story by peter straub which i am reading for my book club that meets this coming saturday. it had great reviews but i thought it was awful. and it was 500 pages long! i have no idea what people were thinking giving it four or five stars. smh i did like death comes for the archbishop. as you said, it wasn't a "novel" so much as a series of....vignettes. nah, that's not the right word but i can't think what it might be. i really enjoyed the writing though. sometimes the narrative won't work for me but i enjoy the writing. does that ever happen to you? i never heard of adam berry so never heard of goodbye hello either. sounds like i dodged a bullet. thanks for taking the hit on our behalf oh, i wish i could join your book club! i've been wanting to start my own science fiction book club but i don't know that many readers who would be interested. choosing the stars my destination as your first book is inspired. it's sure to be a hit. the best of luck with it! that smashed book sounded really interesting. how i wish i had more time to read! (work sucks) (also wish i had read that instead of ghost story. ugh, it was so bad) don't forgive anyone?..... i like to think of forgiveness as being more for me than for the person i forgive. does that make sense? imaro sounds SO interesting. i will definitely have to look that one up especially as you said the writing was good still haven't gotten to fafhrd and the gray mouser. it's the same problem i keep having: i have a job that i have to go to. hate that! i'm keeping an eye out for a copy of that ballard book but, damn, ballard books are hard to find and when i do find one they are too expensive for me. i'll keep looking and then there's h.p. lovecraft. his stories do nothing for me. i'm just saying! you are definitely doing better reading poetry and, honestly, how can you go wrong with emily dickinson. well done! have a great week and until next time... 🕰🕰🕰
@PoorPersonsBookReviewer11 күн бұрын
hi friend the best advice Ive gotten is that the dentist never thinks you're doing enough so dont take it so hard lol , i will keep going to my appointments and reaching for a healthy life. sorry about you not being able to vote for who you wanted to. I can't believe anyone still believes we live in a democracy. i did see you liked Death of the Archbishop on good reads, different strokes for different folk. to answer your question about books where the writing was good but i didnt enjoy the narrative the one that instantly pop into my head was parable of the sower, but ive said enough about that book already lol Imaro, F&G , and Junji ito are so worth a try , next im gonna try to throw in a dying earth story in there and mixing up some horror that isnt Lovecraft, i found a best of john collier at my used book store and the cover is amazing. and your not wrong those Ballard books get pricey im so worried no one will show up to my book club even though i already have people telling me they will show. i guess just like with my videos if i just be myself people will show up. life advice i wish i would have taken more seriously when i was younger. When it comes to forgiveness i can see where you're coming from, i just think that people will abuse good people who want to forgive. theres so many shitty ppl out there that are getting away with literal murder. im still smiling about the Electric hair line in Dickinson's poem, love it! keep showing up to work, one of those kids are gonna look back and realize what a difference you made on them Till next time Friend, Cheers 🕰

The Weseyian anthology was so amazing and i learned about a lot of writers that i probably would have never heard of. if you want a list of the stories and study guide visit sfanthology.site.wesleyan.edu . also if i remember correctly they give you links to some of the stories for free. Lovecraft and that kinda weird horror isnt for everyone. i forgot to mention in my video that i decided to pick up the King in Yellow cause i saw the Outlaw book seller on the hunt for the new Penguin weird horror books. hes probably the only You Tuber i watch every video of nowadays. hi there, friend. look at how long it's taken me to get to this video! i'm not sure why but this year seems more crazy busy than last year. and that's saying a lot. i've been sick too (but getting better) and trying to rest as much as possible but it's nearly impossible with work and everything else that's always going on. i'm sure you know how it is! boy, it looks like you had a tough week with some books there. you get a gold star for sticking with them to the end. not sure i would have. then again i have this thing where i feel like i have to finish a book if only to say "it sucks!" but as i always say: life is too short i believe it was me that recommended clarice lispector's the hour of the star. 😁 SO glad to hear that you liked it. i've read it many, many times and i never get tired of it. i used it in my upper level english classes for my 12th graders for many years and it was always a hit. so simply written but so deep. i hope you will go back and reread it every once in a while. in fact, it may be time for me to read it again. ah, bartleby the scrivner. it's a classic for a reason. brilliant text! i think the fact that it has a subtitle - a tale of wall street - is a big hint to what the novella is about. remember the story isn't really about bartleby, right? it's about his employer. if we think about wall street today, then we realize that nothing much has changed in nearly 200 years. sigh i recently picked up a pretty nice used copy of an elric omnibus edition. i forget which one. i've never been interested in elric but the outlaw bookseller loves moorcock so i'm going to give it a try. not sure when i'll start though..... i just finished lake of darkness by adam roberts and it was the best sf book or really any type that i have read this year. highly recommended! unfortunately, it's not been published in the u.s. yet (i managed to find a u.k. copy on ebay that wasn't too expensive) but keep an eye out for it in the future. i've read other books by roberts but this one is the best so far you and your politics and rants. love it! i'm very upset lately myself as i wanted to vote for jill stein but the democrats have kept her off the ballot again this cycle so i can't vote for her. it means i will continue to vote for "none of these candidates." i would humbly ask you to consider voting third party so that we can begin to destroy the two party system. it has to go! okay, i will leave it there. oh! before i go, let me just say that if you are not looking for more books these days then.....go back and read something else that i recommended! ;) maybe another thomas disch novel? on wings of songs? (you'll LOVE it!) that's all i have time for now. will get to this week's video as soon as i can. take care and until next time.... ⛓⛓⛓

hi friend thx so much for writing , honestly i was a lil worried when i didnt hear from you. Not that you have to write, just that i noticed your absence. glad to hear your feeling better thank you so much for recommending "the hours of the stars" , that and Bartleby really was the bright part of a somewhat disappointing reading week. your students are lucky to have a teacher with such a cool reading curriculum. i never really thought about it from the employers POV, I'll have to think about that for a bit 🤔 im happy im not the only person who the outlaw book seller is influencing, but after all you are the one that recommended him to me in the first place. even though i have only read a few elric stories, I think that they're better as episodic stand alone and dont need a continuing story line. much like Conan. You must have picked up the last cheap copy of Lake of Darkness (good for you) all the ones i saw were going for full price or more but i only did a quick search. but now that it's on my list ill just have to play the waiting game. or like you said Thomas Disch is sitting right there lol (thx again for those) Poor Jill Stine ive been seeing a lot of democrat backed anti Jill ads. not good when you gotta spend and focus on going after a 3rd party candidate who has no chance of winning. me thinks again thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to write, ill forgive you if you just leave an emoji Take care till next time⛓

Do you have any advice for actually finishing books? I'm impressed by how many of these books you read and finish so often. I try to spend a hour a day reading but it takes me over a month to finish a book that way. I also enjoy youtube and film and I just can't balance all of them and end up never finishing any books. I love reading and am inspired by your reading but want to be able to finish more of them.

Thanks for thinking of me to answer your question, I consider it the highest compliment. the truth is I’m in a rare position in my life where I don’t work and have no real friends or family obligations to keeps me from reading. To be even more honest If I didn’t set myself high reading goals, I probably wouldn’t be sober and getting into trouble. To answer your question. First I suggest switching to short stories and Novella’s so you can get the feeling of reward finishing something (most books can cut 100p of filler). Second maybe it’s the genre or authors you’re choosing if you’re struggling to finish, don’t listen to other people’s top 10 list. Find what you love. Third and probably the toughest, you’re gonna have to cut down the screen time, no easy way around it. (Physical books are key for that) I hope my advice is helpful. And please don’t feel bad for not reaching your reading goals, You’re still doing better then most ppl even picking up a book and trying . Everyone’s reading journey is different, but they all start off with a single step.

@@PoorPersonsBookReviewer Very helpful. Thank you for sharing all this. I like the idea of reading shorts first but I do really want to get into Gene Wolfe. Thanks again!

Even if it was all meant to be humorous making the ghost of Emmitt Till a red herring was made in very poor taste. Thx for respecting my opinion. Like Octavia butler maybe I would like one of their earlier books
