Youve obviously researched, but being able to share history of the areas, different routes, and with a slight sense of humour, that has made me laugh at least, every episode has been fab.. As a fellow hillwalking enthusiast, and someone who uses KZbin at times for research, ive happilly watched another episode on 'Munros a personal voyage' (Nothing to do with tv being pants)., I've obviously been a bit slow to finding your channel.(imo some of the (lack of) views are criminal. Word from a family diary says that our Henderson Clan was already in Glen Coe,aka Glencoe, when the Glen was awarded to the Mac Donald Clan for their bravery and skill in the war. The clans joined in marriages and the Chieftain Eanruig (Henry or Hendrey ) and his sons and daughter, the Mac Eanruig (which became the Henderson Clan. ) fought with and supported the much larger clan. They were also there when the Campbell’s came to massacre, but claiming Hospitality which must be honored. It was a vicious trick. One of the sons was spoken of as having married a Norse Chieftain’s daughter from the Orkney’s before or about the time that the Sinclair’s were given control of the Orkney Isles. So the “son” was added to the Hendrey /Henry name. We wonder if that happened after the survivors left Glencoe or before. We believe it was after when everyone scattered to the North . Our Clan was much later to be located near the River Clyde and to the South and East of Edinburgh.

Interesting video. Though there were definitely Celts or people who spoke in a Celtic language and had Celtic culture, in Scotland ( 4.01 ) before the arrival the Gaels to the west coast, of what is today Scotland, in the fifth century. They were a Brittonic speaking people. A different branch of the Celtic languages. The Picts were Brittonic Celts, as were the Strathclyde Britons, of the independent kingdom of Alt Clud ( Strathclyde ). Which included most of the south west part of Scotland, from the river Clyde down into what is today Cumbria, In England. Alt Clud survived as a separate kingdom, speaking a Brittonic Celtic language, similar to Welsh, until the 12th century.

June 3, 1646, Clan Campbell massacred Clan Lamont, over 200 men, women and children were slaughtered, hung from trees and some were buried alive. 2 of our castles were burned to the ground My 10th great-grandfather, Gilbert Lamont was one of those hung. This was 4 times as bad as Glencoe, but it gets less recognition. F*ck Campbell. They got away with mass slaughter twice.

@UtopiaPlanitia2 ай бұрын
Either you’re being deliberately obtuse or you genuinely think the humour is pejorative, when it is clearly not. The joke is that the very specific and bizarre claim comes out of nowhere in an otherwise grounded narrative …and nothing more. I’m Scottish, not that it’s at all relevant. If you don’t like the irreverent gag now and then there’s not much I can do about that. But if you think this channel is about having a laugh at Gaelic culture, you clearly haven’t watched much of it. I haven’t made hours of deeply researched, balanced and objective content on the places, people and history of the Gaidhealtachd because I think it’s all a big joke.

Thnak you. My name is Alan Macdonald Nicolson, son of the chief of Clan Nicolson, or Clan MacNeacail of Sgoirebreac in Skye. Our clan have long been neighbours of the MacDonalds and I would be intersted to know more of their involvement in the jacobite uprisings. What we do know is that our then chief hosted Charles Stewart for several nights of dining while in hiding with Flora MacDonald. Yes, capitalism, exploitation and the clearances went hand in hand in the destruction of the Highland way of life - and in the end, many of the chief's betrayed their kinsman in ordering the clearances - I understand that also was a result of the English policy of re-educating the sons of the chiefs within English institutions.

It’s clear that a lot of effort has gone into this, and while you do briefly mention the Covenanters it is strange there was no mention of the period known as the killing times which saw Scottish Presbyterians persecuted under the reign of both Charles II and James II. I would have thought the uprisings of pentland, bothwell bridge and the Argyll / Monmouth rebellion would have been an important factor in the dwindling popularity of the Stuart regime. I can’t help but feel this is either due to bias or a massive oversight, although I suspect the former which is a shame for such an otherwise excellent production.
@UtopiaPlanitia2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. As I would hope the evenly-balanced humour suggests, there is no bias here other than towards the truth. I have no interest in pushing an agenda that favours either ‘side’. The reason is running time. I would have liked to add in a lot more details but the doc is already fairly expansive and to keep things on topic, some things have to be given priority over others. The persecution of Presbyterians by the latter Stuarts is important, but not absolutely vital to understanding the Jacobite cause. Argyll’s attempted insurrection is covered in our other videos ‘Guardians to Gallows Herd: MacIain and the MacDonalds of Glen Coe’ and ‘Knives In the Dark: Engineering the Glen Coe Massacre’. Again, thanks for your time and comment.

I've always read that Martin Luther, a catholic monk who had eyes for a nun and wanted out of his vows. She left the convent in a barrel, and Luther started making heretical claims against the one true Church of our Lord and start a new one with man made rules instead of God's laws. He died by hanging himself from a bed post ,similar to judas. Britain has lust filled Henry VIII to thank for England's apostasy.
@UtopiaPlanitia3 ай бұрын
Do you believe everything you read? Those are fatuous and highly subjective summations, some might say disingenously presented in order to cast shade on Catholic dissenters. Perhaps a more empirical approach to history is the key to understanding it.

This was a brilliant documentary! I live in Inchinnan and was born in Renfrew and have always wondered why there was a battle near the Glynhill Hotel called the Battle of Renfrew and that there once was a memorial built where Somerled was slain (it is funny to think that the spot where Somerled's memorial was, is now in someone's back garden. There was also once a cross there to commemorate the battle, but instead we were told that it was to mark the spot where Marjorie Bruce fell from her horse and the Robert II "King Bleareie" story. We were not taught anything about the history of the FitzAlan (Stewarts) who were Norman French incomers and Somerled who was always dismissed as a Scandinavian Viking raider rather than a Norse Gael from the isles trying to defend the Gaelic way of life. In Inchinnan where I live there is a field called "Blood's Mire" where some of Somerled's army are supposed to have had a last stand. I have not been able to work out why they were there because if Somerled attacked from Greenock where his ship's were moored, he must have came over the hills through to Paisley towards Renfrew (because of the River Cart blocking a direct route) to attack the Castle of the FitzAlan in Renfrew. If he came through Inchinnan towards Renfrew his whole army would have had to use the ancient ford at what is now Inchinnan's stone bridge to cross the Cart. I am going on a bit, sorry, but I am trying to learn Gaelic now and trying to revive the language that was looked down upon and discouraged instead of being cherished in lowland Scotland. Hopefully one day I will be bilingual and can speak both English and be fluent in Scottish Gaelic (my dream!). I will not have anyone to speak to though, but it will be nice to think I am helping to keep the language alive a bit longer. Oh and by the way, I am am just a wee guy, I don't have any claim to the great ancestry of the MacDonald's or anything.
