Professional investors classically evaluate a given portfolio with μ as its eV and σ² as its variance by looking at μ - α·σ² as its value corrected for risk, where α is a pre-set risk-aversion parameter. The investor distributes money over a range of investment opportunities with aim to maximize this value. An investment company must be risk averse and not tend to gamble with ordinary people's mortgages. Even professional poker players seem to think they can operate without risk-aversity, i.e. α = 0, and evaluate decisions based only on eV not adjusted for risk, which is insane if you have to make a living based on those decisions. An investment firm would go bankrupt within a few weeks.

Re Vertucci scandal: Totally agree that its too easy to front the argument that what more can you expect after HCL cut the head off the snake. Yeah sure, but as Berkey and Lamanager says that doesent prevent it for happenning again, and its a low standard for sure. It is too easy to just fuck up big time in all kind of ways in this industry, and then just shovel the dust under the carpet then continue on as if nothing happend.

It's kind of ironic because this was more of an "economics" episode than a politics episode.
