Oscar, a low-stakes poker player who has been pushed to the fringes of an increasingly difficult industry, confronts an uncertain future within a game that often takes more than it gives.
This documentary examines the benefits and detriments baked into the pursuit of a nontraditional career, and why it can be difficult to abandon something that has defined you for so long - especially in an industry where security is elusive, but extreme wealth is possible.
Parallel to Oscar’s experience, in an effort to fully explore the tenuous line between success and failure, intermittent interview segments featuring some of poker’s biggest names describe how skill, opportunity, and endurance all factor into the creation of a sustainable poker career. These interviews give context as to how the game has changed, what “success” means in a lifestyle that’s inherently unstable, and why Oscar’s story is one small piece of a much larger one.
Presented by Solve For Why in partnership with PokerGo, this is the first feature film by Pigtails Productions.
Featuring Erik Seidel, Nick Schulman, Phil Galfond, Andrew Lichtenberger, Maria Konnikova, Matt Berkey, Christian Soto, ‪@MarlzTV‬, Vanessa Selbst, and more...

I thought this was just going to be a very generic poker documentary about the general history of the last 20 years and I'm very glad to admit I was wrong. Excellent production and Oscar was really the perfect subject of the film. I think his journey is one that is extremely familiar to a lot of us out there. Props to him for facing the reality of his situation and making the necessary steps to put himself in a better position, both mentally and financially.

76 years old now I'm experiencing some health issues that make me think I really need to seriously work on my Poker game. Then this film comes into my life and shines a very bright light on my poker and my life. Like Oscar I've always glided through poker winning a few thousand each year solely relying on my natural ability great instincts and consistent good luck. When I tried to move up in stakes I always failed so instead of working and studying I just stopped trying. This film will light a fire under me! It's now or never.

such and underrated documentary! My friend who use to play poker professionally said---you should never romanticize playing poker for a living. As I learn to play the game---the variance of the game will humble and your decisions will always play an integral part of it. But still Holdem is such a wonderful game and I will always be very passionate about it.

Awesome Documentary! To me, it was very clear that encouraging Oscar to keep playing poker was the wrong choice. Poker is NOT for everyone. In fact, I think around 5% of the population even has a shot at being a serious winning poker player with a reasonable balance in their life if they really tried. The other 95% of people absolutely should not attempt to play poker for a living, if at all. You need so many things going for you to be a successful poker player. You need to fully fundamentally understand statistics: variance, risk, ev, probability, etc. Not just kinda know what those words mean as most players do. Oscar does not. He doesn't understand why quitting when you're up is bad. He doesn't understand why it's so bad to have a 400bb bankroll. He doesn't track his sessions, hours, or winrate at all. He probably played 500 hands in the underground games and thinks he has a three digit hourly in 1/2. You also need to have an exceptional mental fortitude to put up with things inevitably going against you. This is basically impossible as a breakeven player with no bankroll. Every cooler (the KK vs 53o hand, for example) is disastrous. I doubt anyone in the world could play decently under those conditions. This is also exacerbated by not understanding how probability works. You also need to ability to be able to sit down and seriously question the mistakes you've made. You have to go out of your way to review hands, accept that other people's ideas are worth hearing and implementing, and have the ability to focus on studying. Oscar clearly doesn't do this. Sure, when on camera he will say that **this** time, it's gonna be different and he's gonna sit down and grind and fix all his mistakes. There's a reason he can barely beat 1/2 after a decade of playing. I sure Christian has seen this epiphany before dozens of times and the same result happens every time. Just regression back to mediocrity. Don't mean to dunk on Oscar, but he's just part of the 95%. He was not dealt a good hand in life. He isn't a genius and is under constant financial stress. I think any other real job (Uber isn't a real job) would serve him so much better, whether or not he's been "pursuing" this for years. The most damning thing in the whole film was how he says that he dreads driving to the casino more than driving back home after a loss. If that's really the case, this career has absolutely no positives over working at McDonalds except for the false dream of somehow running up millions of dollars that most amateur players secretly can't give up on, deep down.

He brought that one on himself too it wasn't even a proper cooler lol. Shoulda played it literally any other way: Shove pre, call him down, see if the flush completes THEN semi-bluff shove, etc... He was obvs strong. Coulda easily had As or flopped a set, then what? How you gonna gripe then? Btw u know if roles were reversed Oscar woulda open-shoved his 2pair and folded out the guy's Kings lmao.

very well written and thoughtful comment. comments like these are what makes me actually reading the comment section. I see a lot of myself in Oscar. Just doing it (sports betting) without putting in the work. not tracking the hours and losses, not analysing mistakes. that's gambling and not working. and the difference between a gambling addiction and not is a thin line

This documentary, in addition to being excellent and honest, was extremely educational. Topics were covered here: - I play poker because I want to or because I have to - I play poker by choice or lack of choice - Am I being honest about my skill level? - Is my emotional side good? Am I good when I win and bad when I lose? - Do I feel the pressure of money at the limit I play? - Are my plays affected by this? - And etc.... Thank you guys and thank you player for this great lesson.

This was affecting, subtle, and a pleasure to watch. It reminds me of the experience of finding a book without a cover and deciding on a whim to read the first few pages and then a couple hours later finding yourself totally engrossed. The ending was particularly good story telling. It was as if the filmmaker found the few frames or the single moment with each subject of the documentary where an expression on their face revealed their humanity. Thanks for posting this. It was also good advertising for the academy as I need to take a vacation and I am thinking about doing the May tourney class.

I can relate to how Oscar is throughout the video, knowing you are better than the people at the table we sit but can't seem to break through and just feel stuck and unwilling to put in the effort. A fantastic documentary that was very well filmed! It offered so many different perspectives and insights into the game, the mindset , the emotion and struggles from the pros down to the $1-2 rec players. I could relate so well with Oscar and the excuses I tell myself when I lose. When Berkey talked about him not being able to answer the questions of, “What are your leaks”, “How many hours did you play and where”, etc. You can’t fix what you don’t take the time to understand. I love the dam game but have to be honest with myself about how much I’m spending, wasting, if I’m not willing to implement the lessons.

First off, well done documentary, very well produced and very enjoyable. Mad respect to Oscar for doing this and keeping it real. Whether it's poker or something else, I think we can all empathize with Oscar's story with respect to chasing your dreams while having to mitigate certain risks. I give him a lot of credit for wearing his emotions on his sleave for this documentary. I think a mentor/coach would be great for him more than anything, someone that can help him shift his mentality just a little bit. I would like to see Oscar pursue something else that interests him, he seems to have a great foundation, morals and values...that will serve him well in many other professions and will lead to success. Maybe not what he defines as success right now, but that's why I think a good mentor would help, someone that can help him convert those traits into a more meaningful/impactful outcome. Many people lack those traits, Oscar, and I think you'll find they will bring you the success you seek. The poker grind isn't everyone's calling, I think you're calling is much bigger than you can see right now.

I long left the game in a serious manner, but I remember playing with Matt when I lived in Vegas and I was grinding as a nobody in 2008, and seeing he had it back then. I remember going broke a few times some 5 years ago and they were definitely hard times mentally resulting in me unintentionally stepping away from the game for close to 2 years. Eventually I came across a poker room while travelling and felt that spark to go play once again. Unfortunately just as things began turning around we got hit by Covid. Since Covid I found myself bored of playing Holdem online and so here we are beginning the journey of the dark realms of plo4/5/6. All I can say is Poker will humble you over and over and the moment you doubt yourself it's over. Happy grinding

When Oscar was talking about his kings getting cracked by 53o in the way he was, that's a giant red flag that I'm sure a lot of people trying to survive in low stakes can relate with. If one hand is impacting you that much, you're on a very dark and dangerous path that'll catch up with you sooner or later. Poker as a side income is fun and enjoyable. Playing for a living is another beast entirely. It's tragic how many people have tried and are still trying to be 1/2 or even 2/5 "pros" but are just in survival mode, not really even living a meaningful or happy life on any level.

Listening to Oscar talk about poker for more than two minutes it's clear he will never be a winning player

I agree. He doesn’t seem to have natural talent and his poker IQ seems pretty low honestly. But he’s a 1,3 player so it’s to be expected. Also, when your bankroll is small and you can’t absorb a couple bad sessions, it makes playing smart much harder because you start playing scared. He’s one bad month away from losing everything and he doesn’t have a decent job as a backup. Very difficult for anyone to succeed under those circumstances.

I don't play much poker but even I would not have shoved all in with kings after the other guy three bets pre. He should have just checked or called and then folded to any aggression. Even though he had kings, he really only had one pair.
