@wernerje2 жыл бұрын
Charles Parsons invented a multistage impulse steam turbine. The PRR-S2 model turbine is single stage, but operates on the same principle.

Steam turbines was better then piston...also government wanted to use diesel for better business money making....steam turbine train can use pellets or even wood....so you cant make no money out of wood

Thank you for your interest in the subject. I suggest you procure yourself a copy of my turbine book to get more information. www.g1mra.com/books-binders/ The book focusses on precision lost wax casting components ( grabcad.com/library/model-steam-turbine-components-1 ) but shows also earlier, more conventional methods. For the PRR-S2 nozzles, sections of 0.8mm internal dia. medical injection needles were used (silver soldered). Hope this helps.

At present I'm working on a little handbook: "The Multipurpose Model Steam Turbine" which will be issued by the Gauge One Model Railway Association (G1MRA). The book will also contain all information on my previous projects.

Am i wrong on this, or do steam turbines waste energy in this form of usage? I was wondering why there aren't many locos of this type, and am not sure why they would stop using one if they have such immense power.
@wernerje6 жыл бұрын
The torque characteristic of a steam turbine is not very suitable for traction applications. At low rotor speed, efficiency is abysmal. Besides, manpower required to prepare steam engines for duty, run and maintain them is much much higher then for electric or combustion engines. It's money that counts!
@dalershavalon46125 жыл бұрын
1.turbine can only spin in one direction, so the train with one turbine can't move backward. Class S2 installed 2nd smaller turbine just for moving backward,but provide power only 1500hp 2.The turbine has high efficiency ONLY at high RPM,.Since train has shorter traveling distance between each stops than airplan and ship, it spend more time at less efficient low RPM. Of couse there is an alternative way: use turbine drive generator, then power electric motor.However diesel engine is much easier to run.
@timpringle65056 жыл бұрын
Hi Werner. I have been reading all about your turbine experiments from the G1MRA Newsletters plus a couple of issues of Model Engineer. What you have acheived is awesome, but coincidentally I have begun researching into a steam turbine prototype. This design is tending towards your Der Mathematiker. In order to gain your opinion and any suggestions, I was wondering if you could send me your email address to [email protected] so I can send you a more comprehensive letter. G1MRA member No 4710.

Excellent work Werner! I am happy to share with you any resources in my possession on the PRR S2 locomotive (The Keystone and Classic Trains magazines, Baldwin-Westinghouse pamphlet, etc.) Currently I am looking to model the S2 in Meccano (similar to Stokys). Viel Glück!
@wernerje7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your offre, Joseph. I've got all the Information required. My problem is to figure out where all the piping is going to and up to which detail I`ll be able (and be willing) to model it.For your Meccano project I wish you every success!
@josephburgard65747 жыл бұрын
You're welcome Werner. Sadly, detailed dimensions for the S2 locomotive are few given the resources available. Even 1947 "Locomotive Cyclopedia" or Railway Mechanical Engineer mostly have detailed dimensions for the turbine units and gear box. Do you have this elevation diagram? prr.railfan.net/diagrams/PRRdiagrams.html?diag=S2.gif&sel=ste&sz=sm&fr=
@wernerje7 жыл бұрын
The Keystone publication, Volume 45, Nr. 3 was supplied with separate, detailed arrangement drawings at its back. If you get a back issue from the PRR Historical Society (or from elsewhere) you`ll have all the informations required.
