I am looking for a tropical water lily that overwinters in cold water. I live in Phoenix but my pond is close to the north side of the house so for many months during the winter the water is very cold. Many of the tropicals I’ve had fail to come back.

@@goodmusl Tropicals that do overwinter need very specific conditions, they need clear water and actually shallow in full all day sun they also need to be stressed for food for about 3 months before winter so no fertilizing after mid August. Can you offer the plants conditions like this in about 12 inches of water to the level of your pot in very sunny winter conditions? The plant won't be at the surface but the dormant leaves around the tuber will stay alive from this method. Shade is what kills these plants not the cold we have found. Also they need to be dormant so if you don't let them run out of fertilizer before cold season this won't work. Begin fertilizer again around early May.

@ ok I will raise them up higher. They are at the bottom of a 22” deep pond now .Actually I have two ponds … one as described previously that goes months without sun and another one that I built at an assisted living home that has full sun. I guess if I want to have all my tropicals survive , I will have to move them for the winter to the latter pond. Thanks so much for the advice!

The Blue Lotus grows up to 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) tall and 6-8 feet wide (180-240 cm). All plants of the Nymphaeales order are aquatic. They are attached to pond or stream bottoms, but whether their leaves and flowers are submerged, floating, or standing above the water varies. They range in size from the small, fragile Cabomba (fanwort), which has floating leaves less than 0.3 cm (1 inch) in diameter, to Nymphaea, which produce leaves 50 cm (about 18 inches) wide that can cover an area 2.5 metres (8 feet) in diameter in one summer. The largest water lily has impressive circular floating leaves that attain 2 metres (6.5 feet) in diameter and flowers 40 cm (about 15 inches) across. This nymphaea is a large water lily and, therefore, needs plenty of room.

It’s too bad these guys are so arrogant and choose to not see the big picture of how long a new customer can stick around if they treat them right. I will NEVER forget the EXTREMELY rude email reply I received from them after inquiring for some advice and plant recommendations. I was up front that I had a pond that was developed just for fun with my kids as they were learning f science, nature, and ideas how to repurpose rather than discard items. We had taken their old swimming pool (a 5x7) and created a pond with it with no intent to keep it going. We added some local sourced items from a huge pond nearby. Well the kids LOVED it and over time it has developed slowly into a well established pond giving home to many creatures who found their own way, several Fantail fish that have thrived for three years even producing their own offspring. Due to a family member’s illness last summer, our standard weekly maintenance was not performed for an extended time and during a heat wave. Before we could get to it, the pond had a Massive algae bloom. With little time to do more research, I asked for recommendations stating I had $200 to spend to add plants. Well, they apparently could care less about anyone’s story, were annoyed I shared so much about the kids and the development of the pond and went so far to make rude comment in email reply about the length of the email being ridiculous. Then they chose to not even provide any recommendations. As I told them, we are moving a planning to build a huge pond or two on the property. They lost a customer and at least two more with my kids as they grow up. We will never give this company one cent and I would recommend one else does either. They have NO respect or care for anyone except themselves sadly. Not even the creatures living in our pond got their attention to be a reason to help. Guess $200 just isn’t enough. BTW, l fixed up our pond and everything is still thriving and we are moving in just two months now. Now I know who NOT to go to for supplies.

Very comprehensive and helpful vid...BUT some of those plants die each year and breakdown...eg lillies. Do you recommend removing dying vegetation? AND lillies form a root mass across the bottom trappling fine sediment. Should thus be periodically removed ...in situ or by emptying the pond? This is important to my 10,000 lt pond Kind regards Roger

@@rogershand3309I am not sure where you are getting your research but Waterlilies can be perennials or annuals. The perennials gather starch and store them in rhizomes the annuals store them in tubers. You can simply cut off the final leaves from those each season but they do not mess up your pond in general. Any plant would follow that guidelines and waterlily is nothing different you remove spent leaves if you choose and that depends on the ponds setup. There are a number of scenarios from earth bottom ponds to ones with filters both under filters and proper. If you have questions about your specific pond and specific plants send us an email and chat with us, you need to qualify details including the type of lily, your location, and the pond setup before getting the answer you are looking for.

Not sure if these are problems of if I should remove roots. I dont have a filter system. Of particular interest in your video was statement that Film Algae indicate a healthy pond. Mine has lots...AND also a newly arrived bulbus algae (1 to 2 inch dia) growing in/out of the film....that is freaking me a bit. I just got my seeds and its the end of August in central California. If I start them inside and keep them inside over the winter, will an aquarium light and a sunny window be enough to keep them growing over winter indoors? Moving them out to a pond in the spring. if not, do the seeds last a long time and keep till May next year, they are already cut on one end. They came that way.

The Egyptian variety was described as being much more narcotic-like It also grew 6 to 12 ft tall instead of 4 to 6. It's very likely the Egyptians bred their plant to be more of a narcotic and a bigger producer. The modern variety of Nymphaea caerulea, it's differentiated much like modern tomatoes compared to tomatoes of the 18th century.

I am sorry, you are completely incorrect. Waterlilies do not grow Feet tall out of the water. Caerulea is certainly a psychedelic. You are completely confused with 'real lotus' which are tall but, # 1. Not blue anywhere not were they ever, # 2 not feet tall, Caerulea flowers stand 2 to 4 inches above the water and leaves are never above the surface. Egyptian Papyrus (the paper plant) stand high out of the water up to 10 or 12 feet. No lotus on earth has ever grown that tall nor do lotus come in blue. The only two species of lotus are the Asian lotus (pink) and the north american lotus (yellow) the hybrids all come from them and none are as tall as you claim not have any use as a painkiller or hallucination effect.

Hi, you can email us with a photo from our website. A film of algae is very healthy string algae means there is too much fertilizer in there. 20 gallons is far too small for lotus and Waterlilies. Do one or the other or get another container. Lilies are many feet wide. Lotus are usually many feet tall.

I've had a water feature in our backyard for years and had no algae. A few years back I added some river and pond pebbles and had algae since. It's been hair like mossy. I just rake it out by hand and haven't really worried about it but it's a little annoying as it grows fast and needs cleaned out often. We don't have fish but we do have frogs. We don't of course feed them. I've thought about getting some the pool chemicals to get rid of the algae but it really didn't seem a big enough problem. My question would be where did the algae come from? Maybe the pond and river pebbles? Your video answered some questions and I now think I was right to just remove the algae as much as possible and not worry about it.
@pondmegastore
@pondmegastore 7 ай бұрын
You added a ton of nutrients to the pond. A pool only needs dust to get algae from the air you added a ton of rocks that leach minerals into the water. Water erodes continually over time you understand that is how canyons are developed stones also erode slowly and leech minerals especially limestone and sandstone.
