And this is why I love jazz. This man was a gift to us. That trumpet sends chills through my body and is a whole raw, surreal emotion in its own right. The way he puts his own flourish midway through the song... "Braggin'." ; you got to nod and say, "damn." I would love to go back to hear this played live... The way he sways out of earshot with the music, as if he is one with the sounds... Haunting. Absolutely haunting. And I adore it. Beautiful.

I will always remember this song with a tear in my eye. My mother loved this song and taught me how to two-step to it. I can still remember her telling me how to hold a dance partner and move to the rhythm. Later, the very title became sage advice, telling me to see how things come out rather than to be impulsive. "What a difference a day makes," she'd tell me. Maybe one day I'll get to two-step with her again, and Miss Dinah will be singing.

BTW: Louis Armstrong and His Savoy Ballroom Five originally recorded “St. James Infirmary” on December 12, 1928, and it was released as a single in February 1929.

This started going through my head today when I heard a recording of Coltrane playing Soul Train. Maybe this tune was the inspiration for that one. Listened to this piece sung by Dinah Washington quite a bit last year… Such beautiful phrasing. I played it over and over. Thanks for posting this!
