Conflict of interest can be confusing because what if the NP was founded by relatives and some of those relatives have very special skills and services they’d been contributing for free from the start. Then when funding comes in they can’t be paid? We often start organizations with very limited resources and access to providers. That’s when we lean on friends and family for support. If a married couple start a NP, and they are the working board in the early stages, how do you transition when you expand capacity?

I’m 24 and starting up a nonprofit in San Diego! I’m very excited and a bit nervous about it but I’ve created my own domain, building up my website and getting my business license and filings done soon. There’s a lot to learn and the more I learn the more questions I have and more questions I need to answer. Our approach to sexual abuse prevention is pretty uncommon and it’s been challenging to get people to grasp why our methods will work to achieve our goals. Do you have to file by-laws if you don't have any board members? Does the IRS require board members for a small non profit that only the owner runs?
