This would be helpful if you recorded what you were doing - most of the video is a desk and Christmas decoration because you weren’t holding your work within sight of the camera lens. It can be helpful to set up your camera and mark the area on your desk that will be within shot to guide you where to position your work and hands.

Thank you for this. I have an RT95 with low TX power (<1W on both VHF and UHF) and I'm getting the runaround from Retevis. I'm going to try and change the final myself. Any tips for working around the heatsink? Can it be temporarily removed from the bottom of the PCB? I have a hot air solder rework station and it would be nice just remove the final from the top but I think the heatsink will fight me. Also, I love your work mat; It looks like the innards from a Sinclair ZX81.

1. Tube Arrester 2. It oscillates whn the capacitor charges and builds enough voltage to discharges through the tube 3. Time it takes for the capacitor to reach the breakdown voltage of the gap in the tube, in this case, your bulb, the capacitor in series(yellow), the capacitor(brown) value and the input voltaage u have given 4. you added the bulb in series so it takes longer for the capacitor to build up voltage 5. Diodes rectifier, capacitor in parallel to the tube to set frequency, capacitor in series to the circuit probably to limit the current flow into the circuit same for the bulb 6. No, capacitors don't have path to discharge

@Benadski8 ай бұрын
1: I don't know what kind of tube this is, but it behaves like a unipolar sidac it seems. I really would like to know which tube it is! Is it a surge/lightning arrestor maybe? 2: The brown capacitor is charged until the breakdown voltage of the tube is reached, at that point the energy inside the capacitor is dumped in the arc. When the voltage is low enough, the arc breaks and the capacitor charges again. This takes some time. Then it all happens again => oscillation. 3: The frequency is limited by the current through the 60W bulb and the value of the capacitors. 4: If you use a small wattage bulb in series it probably will be slower. Lowering the input voltage can also lower the rate (until it's too low). Radiating the tube might increase the frequency. 5: The diodes and capacitors form a voltage multiplier, the 470nF capacitor stores the energy. 6: Only after discharging the capacitors first!

Can you please post the details of the syntax that you used to accomplish the “steps” you usually do? I am trying to learn both Linux and how to use the VLF Receiver ToolKit. I can’t get vtread to accept the .WAV files that I recorded during the eclipse on 4/8/2024. Thanks for any help you can offer.
@CircuitChaos8 ай бұрын
Hi. vtread is used to read data in the internal vlfrx-tools format (stored by vtwrite). For .wav you need vtwavex - it will read .wav file and output data in the internal vlfrx-tools format. For SAQ (so to extract the frequency around 17.2 kHz, convert it to 400 Hz, and amplify) it would look like this: vtwavex <file> | vtfilter -h bp,f=17200,w=50 | vtmult -f16800 | vtmix -c1,-j | vtresample -r8000 | vtraw -ow -g3000 > saq.wav

@stephenmartin74897 ай бұрын
@@CircuitChaos After some experimentation, I realized that the stereo format of my .WAV file prevented the vtmix step from working properly. Only the left channel of my .WAV file contained the data that I wished to process. Once I removed the right channel and saved the file in mono format (ie. with just one channel of data), vtmix worked fine. I am documenting my experience in case my memory fades and for the benefit of others, too. Thanks again for your help.

Do you think it would be feasible to replace the faceplate ribbon cable with a longer one and use it detached?
@CircuitChaos8 ай бұрын
Hi. Probably yes. All high-frequency circuity is on the main board. I'd only be worried about the microphone signal quality (it might pick up digital noise on the longer path) - but it's something to be tested.

Hi Adam, I actually planned some similar setup. I think it's a good idea to combine a) battery, b) active speaker, c) paddle and d) QMX in one unit as it increases the failure safety in the field. But on the other hand, I already own ready made battery boxes and active speakers. And for the paddle, I thought of mounting a Puttikeg or similar keyer on a leg / knee strap, so I can operate it slip free. I once keyed CW >30 WPM, but those days I've used a homebrew sensor paddle with no moving parts. Testing even top-notch finest mechanical paddles recently, I'm disappointed with the "delay" introduced by the mechanical movement of the contacts, even when it's very short in time. So I might revert to the sensor design.

With a straight key you determine the length of the sound, by holding and releasing the key. Key type has to be selected in settings of the vail (or vband) webpage.

You are using resistors that give you 50.9Ohms but the standard calls for 50Ohms. If I use 20-1K Ohm resistors I would have 50Ohms load. By using your equations I can’t calculate the VSWR 0:34
