I just bought a hardtail and unfortunately live in Cambridge. Where is this or are you keeping it a secret. Kinda thinking it might be somewhere off piste in Wandlebury?

Hey, this trail isn't mine though it is on trailforks so I think it's okay to share that it's at Linton in the woods above the village, called Rivey Woods I think. I haven't been there for ages so not sure what's there now. I used to ride out along the Roman road it's like 45 mins or so. Some of the bridleways around there are a bit more interesting though more gravel bike territory really. Last month I went to chicksands for the first time, it was really good and looking forward to returning.

@lukegriffiths well, mine was for school, granted this was the hardest I worked on anything school related. I noticed that you're a photographer. Did you record these shots yourself?
@lukegriffiths5 ай бұрын
Good effort! Yeah I do everything apart from the music, just working my way through footage I filmed while travelling and making little videos about places and animals. I'm mainly a filmer and editor, the scripting and narrating stuff is a bit of a work in progress for me!

So I went out to test film just 1 feature on a trail. GOOD LAWD this minute must have taken all day to film. My thinking is that I'm going to have to get each feature from 3 different angles, then some side shots blasting through the straight aways, and then somehow mixing in the POV which means basically doing the whole trail 4 or 5 times, stopping repeatedly to move the camera. You sir are my hero right now and these deserve so many more views
@lukegriffiths7 ай бұрын
Yeah I used to have a lot of spare time! Most of my 'good' self filmed videos took at least full day to film, a few took more such as Seeking Solitude (which was bloody steep trails!) and These Short Winter Days (the big jump and drop was never not scary). When I got more ambitious I also started getting more picky and doing lots of takes until I got what I wanted, all that re-riding probably helped my riding confidence over different stuff and maybe my technique/style. It's a process, if you enjoy the film making side of it then it's fun! Hope plan went/goes well!

what lenses do you like to use?
@lukegriffiths7 ай бұрын
I used to film MTB on a Tokina 11-16mm 2.8, which is really old now, but my advice would still be for a wide or ultra-wide zoom with as low fstop as possible. Filming in the forest you need as much light as possible so I often shot wide open at 2.8. The wide angle is good for self filming as you get more in each shot and if filming others then using handheld or with a handheld stabiliser/gimbal a wide angle is more stable and easier to shoot with. It's good to mix it up with some more zoomed in shots using a different lens but majority of the time wide angle is best in my opinion.

@@lukegriffiths is like you knew! Someone had advised 24-70 with the same stop but I’m starting with zero lenses and 24 just seemed a bit too high based on what I’ve found so far in the research. Thank you for your words of wisdom! Your footage is beautiful by the way
@lukegriffiths7 ай бұрын
It's worth noting that 24 is wider on a full frame camera, this particular video was filmed on a Nikon D5200 cropped sensor camera and I currently use a GH5 which is even more cropped. So it does depend on what camera you have/are planning on getting
@mattwasMTB7 ай бұрын
@@lukegriffiths I have the GH6, no lenses yet. Hoping to be able to shoot clips similar to this, artistic but also hyping up the sport on my local trails to build the community. Although I'd like to be able to expand and explore other avenues of videography as well
@lukegriffiths7 ай бұрын
Ah sound, with a GH6 I would recommend as wide as you can find though I have a 12-35mm 2.8 which I find generally gets the job done for loads of stuff and I have shot a couple of more recent self filmed MTB clips with it. You might sometimes still want even wider than 12mm on the GH6 body due to the crop though I'm not sure what is about in that range besides probably fixed fisheyes. I have a converter for my old Tokina lens but wouldn't recommend going down conversion route, autofocus is not great or non existent and the dual IBIS is so good on the lumix lenses. With the Tele extender setting on the Lumix for video you basically double your focal length options in terms of getting tighter shots and closeups which is really useful. To be fair, a 12-35mm native micro four thirds lens is equivalent to a 24-70mm full frame lens so the advice you had was about right if they are coming from a full frame background.

Did you not see sloths?
@lukegriffiths Жыл бұрын
The Observatory Lodge is quite a bit higher than the town of La Fortuna so there aren't many or any sloths in their forest, that is why the staff guide told us. You can find sloths at lower elevations closer to town. The most sloths that we saw in CR was in the seaside town of Tortuguero, though we spent quite a bit more time there anyway.

How did a Owl get there ? Lol
@lukegriffiths Жыл бұрын
Snedge the Snowy Owl has been resident for about 6 years I think, clearly the mice population keeps her rather happy. There are also fairly often Short Eared Owls spotted presumably across from the Uists. Lots of interesting stuff turns up on St Kilda, must be due to the wind! Just this week the NTS seabird ranger posted that they counted 27 Woodcock and 15 Jacksnipe along with a flock of 500 Redwing passing through.
