What about the part numbers on the encoder? I am looking for one, mine is skipping forward and backwards while tuning. If it wasn’t for the mic up and down buttons it would be very difficult to use and configure, if not unusable. The factory warranty has been voided, so it’s up to me to fix. Or can I jerry rig a multi throw switch?

You can order parts from Stryker. Just go to their website, hover over the "Support" tab and select "Part Request". Fill it out and they will contact you.

Thank you for the demonstration. I have two of these radios and I swear the sensitivity was great at one time, but now it seems that both of them have lost their sensitivity. I wonder if anyone has experienced that on these. I wonder what could have caused their sensitivity to drop. They are now only good for up to a mile of so when they used to work fine.

Not having one in front of me to look at It's hard to say. Could be a bad 1st RF amplifier. I can't even remember if these were analog, direct digital sampled or hybrid receivers. If it has a ceramic filter they are known for going bad in cheaper radios so could be a possibly.

Thank you Mike, I'll see if I can measure the sensitivity somehow. I don't have the equipment for it but perhaps there is something at work I can borrow 😊

My grandfather was a radio operator in WW2 and after the war a lifelong ham radio enthusiast. I didnt think mych about it until after i got into building my own tube amps a decade ago. Right around that time my grandfather passed and i bought his home to live in from the rest of my siblings. And of course i had to restore some of his old gear so i started with his old shop radio which was an all Tube Realtone Receiver (yes they made tube equipment believe it or not lol). And believe it or not im still finding things. Tonight while looking for an enclosure with a grill for an attenuator i just built i found this sane CB radio. Seems like its in better shape but strangely enough it doesn't seem to be a copper played chassis. Everything else seems identical but the chassis looks to be steel with many components riveted down. Its even got that same exact old 40 uF axial cap lol. Im so tempted to pull out the variac when i find this stuff full well onowing better lolol. Luckily the temptation is slightly less than the trepidation and ill sit on my hands until i have the time to make a capacitor list so i can order some to recap it. What are the odds i could fond the schematic online? I normally dont have much luck finding them for things like this. Thanks for posting!

It can be found in the SAMS CB #8 service manual. Not sure about finding a "free" copy online but you can purchase a digital copy of it. SAMS went out of business a long time ago but the company name and the rights to all their service literature was purchased. It can be found here for purchase. www.samswebsite.com/en/photofact/details/index/id/40706 Also check eBay, the original SAMS manuals can frequently be found there.

@mikesradiorepair That's what I figured, I knew it was a long shot id find a copy floating around for free but it's so nice when it does happen lol. Thank you for the information, I'll screenshot it for reference. (SAMS CB #8 SERVICE MANUAL) I also found a couple other CB's so maybe I'll get lucky and there will be some other info in the manual I could use as well.

So what do you do to fix the antenna problem? All you guys talk about doing diagnostics and stuff but none of you say what needs to be done to the antennas to make it match the radio.

Tune it by adjusting it's length so it is resonant at the center of the CB band.

Has anyone tried to add a counter poise to this antenna? The roof of my new car is metal but mostly fiberglass. I don’t have faith in the magnetic contact being sufficient. Any ideas? Should I nix the antenna and rethink?

They do go bad. If it's a radio that hasn't been used in a very long time the contacts may just be tarnished and cycling it numerous times will help to clean them. Otherwise it's just going bad. On the bright side the switch has two separate sets of contacts and they only use one. You can put a jumper wire over to the other side of the switch and try using the "unused" set of contacts.

Love your videos Mike, but All sonar tube radios are push pull audio just to clarify. The G, e, h, 23, 3023 all have push pull modulators, there just stuffed inside the single 12bh7a tube, not seperated like the 6bq5 tubes. I noticed nobody on utube clarifies this & makes the 2340 tx audio seem magical. Its audio increase is a combination of changes, not just the 6bq5 tubes. Very little audio increase also, going from 3-4 watt 12bh7a tube to a 5-6 watt 6bq5 tube. What helps the 2340 tx audio allot is the mic PRE-AMP board. Put one on a fs23 & hear it get louder! The 2340 stock mic also helps with louder audio as it has EXTRA electronics inside. Not all stock sonar mics are the same, open them up & see why! Also, the pll has a Seperate Power Supply, so replacing all of the caps in the radio will NOT help the Out of lock issue. The pll 17 volt dc power supply has a seperate tap on the power transformer for less noise in the pll logic circuits. Look at the schematic, pll 17VDC has only 1 small electrolytic cap lol.

Location's of C242 to C250 are fubar between the sams and factory pace manual. Best to start at channel 1 and tweak each one to see witch one moves the freq and map each one out, Also i found the C241 only adjust channel's 1 through 4 on this unit As far as the can layout. Use the 1000M Sams manual CB-104 and see it the location's are the same. Come back Mike. WE ALL MISS YOU.

This may have been a Cobra 148 GTLDX from the UK, as the EPROM would have been set for the UK legal 40 FM. Very common mod here in the UK.

I just noticed how old this video is, but Mike yeah if you redo the jumper like you had it there's a procedure when you turn the rig on which puts you into a menu where you can play with higher wattage output and more modulation. Now that FM is legal in the USA we are going to probably see the newer FM version of that board. I know these have been out for several years but I'm just starting to get into this.
