I was never a cv fan, but blues music really opened my eyes on them. Early 70s speakers like AVID with Phillips drivers are junk. That Sansui just sounds better even on youtube through my phone.

Hi Kevin, I have a question that you might be able to use in a video in the future. I just found a pair of mb Quart 390 speakers. I only found out they were 390's from checking the internet, they have no labeling, only a sticker in German that talks about the quality and appearance of the wood. I have read that these a 4 ohm speakers. I honestly don't understand what that means, or if I can use them with my amp (au717). Maybe you could make a video explaining the difference in plain talk, which is one of the reasons I follow you. Thanks.

Realistic equipment was made by other manufacturers like Sansui, Hitachi, Pioneer and others back in the day. Just Radio Shack just put their Realistic badge on the front. It was pretty quaility stuff. The STA 90 I own one myself as well as the STA 2100, STA 2000, MA 2001 and TA 1001 Intergrated Amp and Tuner and my first receiver, the STA 52B from 1980.

I personally own a Yamaha CR820 with the full wood surround cabinet. It was something in my price range at the time, but even if it wasn’t I think it had the classiest look of any receiver. Even more than some of the others in the line (both higher and lower cost units). It had a good balance of lighting, dials, switches, buttons that seemed to work together. The dull brushed aluminum face still looks upper class and not like something with the “Sears” logo on it.

I bought a Kennwood KR 7400 in 1976. It cost 2400 DM (German marks). At that time that was 2 months' salary. He still plays today. THAT is quality!

I miss browsing through Hi-Fi Stores. I retired in the Philippines and live in a remote area. The only stores at the malls here offer plastic boxes. I had an old Tecnics Turntable I brought from Spain to the Philippines in my suitcase. I still have an 40 year old Akai Integrated Amp at my x-wife's house I'm going to have shipped eventually. I have some new equipment, a Yamaha receiver and KEF Q Series Speakers that sound great, but I still love vintage audio.

The one thing I would say is if you are an enthusiast hobbyist who has reel-to-reels from back in the day, getting a deck for cheap and tuning it up is usually pretty easy. I could probably get a couple of reel to reel decks and get one working and let the other one go for so cheap!

We sold tons of the 4311 speakers, it was our top selling JBL speaker. It was partly because the store owner discounted them a little when they were sold as part of a complete system. They would howl with as little as 20-25 watts, but really came alive around 50-75 watts and would handle a couple hundred if you were judicious with the volume control. The bass was rock solid, you could snuff a candle held in front of the woofer with some good disco or hard rock. They worked well with anybody's receiver or amplifier. Can you do a review of the L300 and L220? Those were the biggest JBL's we sold and they usually went to someone running big power, like a 2325 Marantz or a STR-V7 Sony. I think you'd be able to hear music vocals clearly out of them from a mile away. The L300 was another speaker that had a glass top, but you didn't have to worry about tilting them because the speaker front was tilted about 5-7 degrees or so. In a room with good acoustics you'd think the band was there with you. The L220 was great for rock, and if you could drag them out on the patio the neighbors could fully enjoy them too. I wanted a set of the 220's, just didn't have a place to put them. I did sell four of them to a guy once. He had them on a 2325 in a room about half the size of a basketball court and he wasn't afraid of the loud knob.

I agree w/ buying spks first, but I explained it as if you find a set of speakers that sound good on a cheap stereo, they're just going to get better

My father liked Realistic/Radio Shack stereos and speakers. I had a nice pair of Realistic bookshelf speakers for years. After sitting for awhile the cone rotted , a bit of duct tape and problem solved 😂😂 . My brother in the navy for 35 years visited Japan , South Korea, Australia fairly often was able to get some nice equipment stereos , amps , turntables , and speakers.i was jealous !! 😅😅

We had a set of L100's in our sound room at the stereo store I managed in the early 80's. we would blow peoples minds with it, they rarely bought them, as the stack system crap was just coming on, so people just went cheaper. But i spent a bunch of time in the sound room listening to Blue Oyster Cult and the Cars turned up to 11.

What something is worth and what it sells for are two very different things. If you like something, don't listen to the haters, just enjoy it.

My dad had a quad system, he always said that if you can't find a test record made to balance the sound don't buy a quad. I've got a BeoSound Century still works great. But when the small stand broke it took me 2 months to find one, and it was in the Czech Republic. Sound is still awesome though

Western South Dakota we don’t have vintage stereo shops. So if small shops don’t have any online inventory or shipping I’m totally out of luck. I have to shop on Reverb and eBay.

Had a Yamaha CA-2010 that I loved but after 4 times needing to take it in for various repairs I sold it and got a Yamaha A-S1100. I get the look of vintage and the power of those monster amps with worry-free performance. Also the prices of any restored vintage stereos in my market are outlandish.

I noticed you left out linear tracking turntables, I purchased my B&O IN EARLY 81, 82 and has served me well, probably can't find cartridges for them but I still have a new MM3 in the box for whenever I need it, it is still a very esthetically pleasing unit and fot the longest time some of my friends thought it was a CD player, lol

Bought my first Technics in 1976, a Technics SL3200. It still runs perfectly today, 48 years later (except the strobe is burned out). A couple years later I bought a Technics SL3300 and still have that 46 years later. Everything works perfectly. I spin records 12 hours a day, and longer on weekends, and these workhorses are still running at perfect speed, with not one single issue with either table. There's a reason they are so highly regarded!

This video is just depressing. I have a lot of components, but here in a metropolitan area of 6 million, I know of no high-end repair shop. Nor do I know where to find obsolete and discontinued capacitors and transistors. I once took a pre-amp to a TV repair shop, and the guy wrecked it.
