Very hard work, i bet lots of farriers have bad back as they get older and wrist injuries. I loved watching our blacksmith shoeing horses when i was kid in the early 60’s.

She definitely fits her name if nothing else. Hopefully your bell didn’t get rung too loudly when you went flying

Is there a reason farriers don’t switch legs before they finish with one hoof? I think it would be much better on the animal to rotate around to give the legs recovery time…I watch a lot of sickly unfit animals who can barely stand on four legs in animal rescue situations who would really benefit-and it would help little ponies too.

I always stood on one side of my pony not in front of her so I could feel her weight shift if she wanted to go and push her to keep her off balance. It protected the farrier. She was good though and generally just leant on him... all weight gradually shifting onto the leg he was holding!

If a pony or horse doesn’t know how to stand still for the farrier that means its owner is either incredibly thoughtless towards farriers or they are completely ignorant of horsemanship and inexperienced as a horse owner. Yelling “settle” is completely useless. Makes you thankful for responsible horse owners who have put in the time and work teaching their horses how to stand.

She looks quite pigeon-toed. Probably not had much hoofcare aa a youngster, before her current owners got her - and no concerted effort to build up her confidence in hoofcare by her previous owners, when she was young and more malleable. But if she's better already after her first session with you, I expect she'll soon come round.
