My god Peter, how on earth do you manage to hold a massive hoof like that between your thighs. You must be able to crush a walnut between them they are so strong. He’s a big lad. I’ve a fondness fir big draft horses. My grandad worked in a brewery and the horses were his responsibility. He passed when I was only 7 but I remember sitting on his knee since I was a wee lassie and he’d tell me all the stories about the horses. He loved them so much

Max even took a look to see how his newly trimmed hooves look. Hope you are able to rest and recover. Best wishes to you and the family!

I think it just tickles 🤠. He looks like a very nice horse. That hoof made your nippers look like a toy. I’m not a farrier but I’m an old school Fitter Machinist. We used to have a thing called a “File Card” to clean crap out of a files teeth. You just brush across the teeth and it removes the crap. It’s like a short flat wire brush but meant for the purpose. We also used to fill the file up with something else like chalk so the shavings wouldn’t stick. 🤠

It's normal nowadays to file the hoof wall, but it removes the outer waxy, dense layer of the hoof - the stratum tectorum. A better way might be to leave it in place. I think there was a trend towards removing it to avoid 'hoof flares', but width of hoof isn't an issue that causes problems. In wetter climates, removing the outer layer below the periople doesn't make a difference to moisture in the wall, but in dryer places, the hoof needs that protection to prevent cracks.

Get the owner to help you with a lick - if he is taking his foot (and you) away, the owner can take the lick away. If he gives you his foot, he can have the lick until it's done. Giving him a sweet experience as he gets his toes done and making your job a little nicer(easier).
