I think this is the first time I've agreed with everything said in a road test and especially an electric road test. (Except the way you promounce Energica!🙂) I've ridden the Energica Eva Ribbelle, Zero SR/S and DXR/S and I've done over 10,000 miles on my own SR/F. As you say the Energica is better on paper, but The Zero is just nicer. I have a charge tank, so I get fully charged from 20% in 50 minutes. I've had 203 miles from a 100% charge and it then registered a range of 238 miles on 110% charge. I seldom get less than 100 miles from a charge. I've never experienced this Range anxiety thing they all bang on about. Admired the Zero rider's roadcraft in your film and the scenery was fabulous. I recognised The EEMC shop in Redgrave of course, where I bought my Zero, I nip in whenever I can think of an excuse to see Alec and Nathan. Top marks for a sober entertaining report.

Thanks for the kind words, Gary! My advice to potential buyers is to first ask them what they intend to do with the bike. It all depends on what they want to do and where they are in the world. Whether I chose a Zero or an Energica would depend on that, and of course, budget. For me, my Energica Eva Ribelle allows me to tour with the minimum stopping times. I previously had a Zero DSR with a Charge It's Chris who liked the Zero DSR/X better, but that was based on sound. In all fairness, the pre-production Experia wasn't quite the finished version. The noise was the issue for him and it transpired that was particular to that bike and (it transpired) a low oil level. I share your view on range anxiety. It's just not a thing. I've ridden electric motorcycles since 2016 - the first six years on a Zero DSR and the last two on an Energica Eva Ribelle. In that time and almost 40,000 miles I've never once suffered range anxiety. Conversely, I ran out of petrol twice prior to that on a petrol bike and nearly a third time, touring the Alps, having just descended the Stelvio, and with a storm chasing us! We swapped the bikes halfway through, so I'm not sure whose Roadcraft skills you were admiring, but we've both earned our IAM Masters with Distinction and qualified as IAM National Observers, so I'd expect a reasonable standard, human failings aside! 😀 Re the pronunciation of Energica, don't get me started on that. As a Modern Languages graduate (sounds odd to say when it was 30 years ago!), I'm have a habit of pronouncing foreign brands with their authentic pronunciation. It's got me into trouble with Kärcher (I pronounce it the authentic German way, which gets odd looks in UK stores), but then even their UK advertising team don't bother pronouncing the name the right way. GIVI is 'JIVI' to me - stands to reason when the founder was Giuseppe Visenzi. And With Energica, the stress is on the second, not third syllable. I'll defer to someone who should know… The Italian CEO, Livia Cevolini! 😀 kzbin.info/www/bejne/omG3kqBqeMlnnrssi=kdRSs7RGUc5B15f2&t=74

@@jtchivers Thanks for taking the time to read my comments and again I'm with you, re; your reply. Sorry I'm still muddling you two up as this is the first of your films I've seen. I too preferred the Zero over the Energica, among other things, for the noise. I much prefer the silent running and I love the smoothness, whereas I felt the chain snatch a little when I rode it out with Nathan. Not very much much mind, but not as sublimely smooth as the Zero's belt, especially at that throttle off, to throttle on point. I'd seen the Experia in the shop and I'm quite taken by the colour scheme as I do admire the police riders. I'm now thinking perhaps I should have a ride on it now I've done a few miles on my SR/F. I've ridden a couple of hundred miles with Police riders and I'm mates with Norfolk's soon to retire Road Safety Officer (Motorcycles) Andy Micklethwaite. While I aspire to their standards and skills, it was how I spotted your roadcraft. I couldn't spot where you swapped bikes in the road film, but the riding of each bike seemed to be consistent throughout, which makes me wonder if the camera position makes the Zero look better, or if the Experia was tending to "thrupenny bit" the corners. There seemed to me to be a little notch around the apex, at about the point where I would be rolling the throttle back on, just where that chain might give a tiny flick? I did find the Ribelle to be a tiny bit harder to ride than The SR/F on the test rides. The SR/F just felt like an old pair of slippers after about a mile. If I had a change I would probably go for an SR/S, which is a little bit more comfy than the SR/F and has better weather protection while still feeling like a naked bike experience. I've had my SR/F seat contoured and re-covered and now the crown jewels are much more comfortable not being squashed against the "Tank"! I get it now with pronouncing Energica. I'm a luddite with foreign words anyway! (and a lot of English ones too!) I don't even like Ducarti compared to DuCATi even if the Italians say it that way. I even managed to type my foot into my mouth by putting an "M" in pronounce instead of an "N". Besides it was only a gentle tease.. 🙂 Keep up the good work, I will have to catch up with some more of your films.

Im a bit confused about the charger, Is this a normal connector on the Zero's or one you put on your self or is this on the newer models only ?

It's the 6 kW Type 1 Charge Tank which I had fitted when I decided to keep the motorbike when my finance package ended and I had the option to have it retrofitted. Newer Zero bikes already have Type 2 AC fast charging included, but it was an expensive option and limited to 2.5 kW when I originally bought my DSR in 2016.

@@FlyingFun. Noise is not a part of the attraction of bikes for me. Most noise on a bike is wind and I wear ear plugs with a comms system anyway. There's a discernible jet-like whine on the Energica which is not unpleasant, but pulling up to junctions is great because when the bike is stopped or nearly stopped you can hear oncoming vehicles which are out of sight.

@@FlyingFun. Chain maintenance is pretty much in line with petrol bike. Unlike my petrol bike, I didn't put an oiler on the bike and it hasn't faired as well as a result. Replaced the chain in April this year with a Regina "maintenanceless" chain, though I am not treating it as maintenanceless. I'm trying to see how I get on using ACF 50 on it instead of oil or lube, because the biggest enemy to a chain is rust. I hope that if I can keep it rust free, combined with the characteristics of the chain, it will hopefully fair well. Well, there's only one way to find out!

@@FlyingFun. To be fair, on-board recording was with the mic very close to the chain. Not what you hear when riding. I was trying to capture the motor noise, but it picks up a lot of the chain. From the riding position, you can occasionally hear the motor whine, but you mostly hear wind like on any other bike, unless riding with ear plugs, which I normally do.

Thanks for highlighting whats possible and also the issues with these bikes. Im wanting to get back in the saddle but really unsure what to get, In the past i commuted for a year though winter etc so got a fairly good grounding, later on got a xv535 rode it as a fun machine, went all over the country but ultimately found its tank too small for that and wanted more power, rode my mates gpz900r a few times and then got married and kids came along etc, 20 years on and im thinking its time to get back to it. I like the idea of electric , the xv535 was nice because i didnt need too much gear changes. The zero sr seems a perfect fit but i read a lot about issues with it, the biggest worry being water getting into the electronics and battery causing very expensive repair costs. The ribelle is tempting , but id be buying used , no way im oaying new prices.

How will the government replace the lost tax from petrol sales.
@jtchivers
@jtchivers 2 ай бұрын
Pay per mile, weighted by vehicle type and pollution levels. Could be easily done by recording annual mileage (as is done at MOTs), with users managing their own payments on an ongoing basis, in the same way energy companies work, but governments will likely overcomplicate it with tracking or black boxes. Per per mile, based on pollution and vehicle weight is an inherently fairer system. Those who use roads more and cause more impact should pay more than those who don't.

Hi John, thanks for your video it's very helpful. One question if I may: how do you send route embbeded waypoints from Basecamp to a Garming GPS? When I'm navigating the GPS, I'd like to see on the GPS screen the waypoints I've added to the route when creating it. I've manage to send across the route itself but not the waypoints. Many thanks. @jtchivers
@jtchivers 4 ай бұрын
Hi Pedro. Assuming you're connecting the unit to PC/Mac running Basecamp, sending the route to the GPS will include any Waypoints used in the route automatically. You don't need to send them separately. If it isn't doing that, something isn't set up correctly. I'm assuming you mean Waypoints in the true meaning of what Basecamp calls Waypoints and the GPS unit calls Favourites and you don't mean shaping points.
@Pedro-uo5do

@@jtchivers Thanks for your feedback. Yes I'm connected to a PC and running Basecamp. Google Earth calls these points as Placemarks while Basecamps call them Waypoints. I've also seen people calling them POI's Points of interest... These POI's are sent to the GPS along with the route but not shown on screen during navigation since they are not embbeded in the route. Instead, they are stored within 'Where To?' and then within 'Saved' which doesn't help much as you can't see them while navigating. Any tip will be highly appreciated. Thank you

@jtchivers
@jtchivers 4 ай бұрын
It's an idea that a few people have suggested, but it would tie you down to a very specific route and timings and would effectively mean that if you didn't meet those for some reason, you might not be able to charge, because someone else had booked times around your original plans. I wouldn't personally want that and it really wouldn't have helped me, but might have made things worse on this journey. It's worth pointing out that charging infrastructure is further improved since I filmed this if I'd had a bit more knowledge of the bike and the potential issue with the locking pin and how to overcome that, the last section of the first day's ride in Cornwall would have gone better.

Hi, Thanks a lot. I think, it would make no point to fit in the DC charger to such bike. I see only added value in not carrying the charging cable, coz the battery is really small. It would be great to see the real range with max regenerative breaking as in my Tesla it does more than 25% of energy added to the battery, and therefore, it safes the breaks and prolong the range massively. Yes, the sounds are actually great. Certainly not a cheap purchase price tag, but then the running costs are significantly lower than petrol engine bikes. With my higher than average mileage, it's actually easier to justify, though I admit, this was a purchase out of desire more than practicality, but then I do many more miles on two than four wheels and some people apparently think nothing about spending considerably more on a car.
