Nobody grows jujube from seed?
@LuminousTurtle2029
@LuminousTurtle2029 8 күн бұрын
You can get seeds but they're very picky about how they grow. I've gotten seeds to sprout but I've either underwatered them or overwatered them and they failed. I've also gotten a tree to grow from pruned roots when I had to prune the roots of the one I purchased to make it fit the hole I dug for it at planting time. Again, I got a cute little plant and it also failed--back to the under or overwatering again. So even though it's possible, it's probably better to get a nice sized tree that will fruit for you quickly.
@sheckydiamond7533
@sheckydiamond7533 9 күн бұрын
There's commercial jujube production. It's distributed for retail sale. They still make the candy. There's got to be more sources for trees. It's not like loquat, which is not produced for agriculture.

Regarding the pollination problem of the coffee cake, on a different kind of tree, my Mexicola avocado only produces rubber fruit too. You think a B type avocado would help? I have 50 avocados on my 18 yr. old tree that has only produced a couple of crops (spraying with honey water finally brought the bees to pollinate.) The avocados do have seeds, but the fruit is inedible. Thank you, Gary, for the video.
@GrowsGoneWild
@GrowsGoneWild 9 күн бұрын
Is your tree grafted? I believe Mexican types need to be picked when they are black. Rubbery fruit wouldn’t be a pollination issue, you wouldn’t get any fruit at all.
@sheri023
@sheri023 9 күн бұрын
@@GrowsGoneWild I assume it is grafted. Every year we got two ripe avocados and then I saw where honey water would bring the bees. And since then there is a nice crop but they will not ripen. Some even fall off the tree and are black, but still like rubber. I've heard this variety has uneven ripening but there is no ripe ones at all. I got it at a nursery so I thought it should be grafted.
@GrowsGoneWild
@GrowsGoneWild 9 күн бұрын
@@sheri023 is it’s from a nursery than it should be the correct variety. I have some fruit dropping on my Stewart now and some that are rubbery, but I am also getting some that end up eatable after sitting on the counter a couple of days. I pick them as black as possible.
@sheri023
@sheri023 9 күн бұрын
@@GrowsGoneWild I was thinking of getting a Stewart too because it is cold hardy. This is zone 9B so it doesn't get too cold too often, Twenty-eight degrees a few times but the tree is protected by the house. The Mexicolas sit on the counter a few days too but remain rubbery and no taste. It does get very hot summers and was 119 degrees for a day, could be the heat.
@GrowsGoneWild
@GrowsGoneWild 9 күн бұрын
@@sheri023 jeez that’s hot! I went into the nursery a couple years ago to buy a mexicola from Gary but he didn’t carry it because he said Stewart was better. So might be a good choice for you.

@@Free_Falastin2024 There are pruning guides on the internet. Apparently, if you don't prune it correctly, it stops growing. And if you do it right, it grows like crazy. The Internet and even local nurseries are filled with bad information on correct soil and many others things. This especially applies to avocados and most other fruit trees. Once I stopped using the commercial non-soil soils, it's been all up hill from that point on.

Methyl Bromide will solve most problems. Agricultural growers inject methyl bromide about two feet into the ground to sterilize the soil before crops are planted. Methyl bromide is also used to treat commodities such as grapes, asparagus, logs, and other imported goods to prevent introducing pests to the United States. Treatments often fulfill official quarantine requirements for international shipments.
