Sagan's belief in extraterrestrials was, and remains, a woo-woo, evidence-free faith position which violated his own "skeptical" standards. He latched onto it as a substitute for the god beliefs he thought he had to abandon. Michael Shermer discusses a study about how belief in ET's is a religion surrogate for allegedly rational, secular and scientific people like Sagan in one of his last _Scientific American_ columns. Apparently Sagan and similar people find the ET religion attractive because it gives their lives meaning and purpose, as that study concluded. Just to show the absurdity of this situation, ask: Do these undetected ET"s have to believe in *_OUR_* existence, without any evidence, for *_THEIR_* lives to have meaning & purpose?

8:17 Mr Zubrin "disagrees a lot with Mr Musk's politics". Aha. Comments about W. von Braun. No. I'm not insinuating anything. Just pointing out what a Pandora's Box it is, to preemptive wave the white flag of politics; when nobody asked about it... I might add, that I disagree (a lot) with Mr Zubrin's: politics, fashion sense, diet, the way he arranges his books, and his haircut. Besides that, I really enjoy listening to Robert talking about our journey into a future in space. Thx for coming to my TED talk.

I'll just say it.... if Sagan had lived in the 2020s, he'd be sucked into being part of the woke academia set like so many others. Cosmos and Demon Haunted World will forever hold the title of most influential and important books I've ever read as a kid in the 90s. They were a watershed and kindled my nascent skeptical worldview in a way nothing else could have. But Sagan himself had some really eye-rollingly lefty indulgences. His pomposity on nuclear issues in particular verged on the quasi-religious and he loved correcting people who said things like "man" to represent everyone, to rather say "people" or "humans".

Glad Zubrin's highlighting the senility of the political leaders, you can't have a country run by a man who is clearly severely senile and a leader of the space program who believes the moon has a dark side which is an unknown mystery to us.

His books, lectures and interviews as a voice of science, reason and rationality. Most people leave none of it. Only a very few, handful do. In fact, most people are totally irrational and staunchly superstitious, and try to convince others of their superstitions, fearmongering, tribalism, segregationism, primitivism and archaism. Whereas science and people of science admit that they don’t know everything (none do!) and that they’re trying to figure things out and to understand the world around us better, and that the onliest way to do, understand, learn, know, discover, explore, invent anything at all in the first place is via science and scientific means. Science is honest as it deals with facts. It’s nemesis, religion/faith, lies and pretends to know.

Hello Michael! Great interview! Lisa mentioned Baseian statistics and I've been thinking a lot about the ongoing "Eyewitness testimony phenomenon". I started looking around for different kinds of studies about the validity of eyewitness testimony and everything I could find was about the court of law. I think it would be interesting if someone were to gather up all of these various reports of uap's and categorize them all, localize them, and perform a Baseian analysis of this data. Nobody has done this and that seems strange to me because so many people claim to be so interested in this phenomenon. It's the only data that exists regarding the subject and it just gets swept in to a big pile and labeled "evidence". Even upon consideration of this idea some interesting things appear.

51:53 - if it was human over hunting, why didn't the native Americans hunt the buffalo into extinction? And how did a rather small number of nomadic people hunt to extinction all the *other* megafauna, including the ones that, in any other sense, would be hunting the small groups of nomads, like dire wolves & sabertooths? Also, why? It wasn't for food, as the nomads weren't numerous enough to need that much food. And a nomad can only wear so many dead animals at one time whilst nomading. And given all they had to kill them was sticks with sharpened stones tied to then, maybe arrows if they were real hi-tech nomads. How do you call yourself a skeptic as you buy into some of the most absurd notions ever proposed?

Nuclear war result People are delusional if they think the majority of the human population will survive. They can only speculate how it pans but I have the perspective of having lived thru it. You have to understand that nuclear bombs will trigger nuclear meltdowns of the power stations. The Radiation levels of 200+ reactors in USA ALONE plus nuclear bombe will push the entire species to brink of extinction. NUCLEAR WAR I have lived thru a global nuclear war in the early 21st Century, and i can tell you that the majority of humankind was wiped out. 18 survivors in Europe (southern alps) 508 survivors in Australia. By the end of the 21st century under 500000 people are left alive on the entire planet. That Nuclear war I lived thru gave me Radiation sickness, and so traumatized me that I cried for 20 years, retelling what i experienced. I am still suffering the after effects of that war biologically. The sad reality is that humanity was almost totally eliminated by that war and those that did survive were struggling to survive extinction biting at their heels. It will not be anywhere easy to survive. If they go the way of nuclear war…there is not much hope for the earth. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eprZYqSQeLyIjbc&feature=share Watch this video of World war 3!!! One last thought… People dream of nuclear bombs falling and the rapture happening at the same time…to which I reply that they are mistaken what happens. The bombs killed the bodies of those who thought they were raptured. What really happened was they thought their bodies were transformed into spiritual bodies. Because they don’t understand that the soul is much more sensitive than the physical body but in all other respects it is a perfect copy. So these people were killed and their soul and consciousness was “raptured” upwards. Those who were left behind are the survivors of the bomb blasts. No second coming at all? UPDATE JANUARY 2024 Wow…wow…wow. In 1947 this grey ALIEN… Warned that a president would would reign for a very short time would launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the enemy…that would kill milions. But the radiation from that would result in the near total elimination of humans on the earth. The mutations to human anatomy would give rise to these grey aliens who are the evolutionary descendants of eatth humans. Humans face two threats to their survival… 1. Nuclear war and 2. Artificial super intelligence which will use propaganda to incite hate against those that are different (political and religious). He said these things will happen in just a little over a half a century from now (he lived around 1947). So president joe biden is weakening the USA and will launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike on the enemy… and the rise of AI Artificial Intelligence…is the second threat. All being fulfilled as the Alien warned. Comment to Laura… Very true. The greys say that they intend on living on this planet with or without our species unless we change! Indeed they have been hard at work repairing the genetic damage we caused to our own species that caused us to mutate into greys in the course of time. There are now hybrid grey/ humans that can pass as one of us but are much more advanced than us living underground on the earth. So our species will survive because the greys need to preserve a small number of us in case something goes wrong with the hybrids they created to replace humans upon the earth in the near future. But it is the hybrids that will populate the future not human. Though both human and grey will probably be preserved in case something goes wrong with the new species.

Can any nation deactivate an ACBM after an accidental launch? If not, why not? If someone accidentally launched a bomb at us, then frantically called and told us they had switched it off, would there be enough time before we respond with our 82 launches? If we waste a ton of money for the questionable Sentinel upgrade, I hope we at least get a detonation stop switch... or maybe a remote missile explosion switch to show our target nation that we successfully cancelled our booboo bomb. Hopefully they can do the same if they have already responded.

Too many commenters dont get it. Some have profoundly ignorant comments. Her book is quite challenging. The last chapters are basically your final exam testing whether you actually now know how to apply the various lenses to elucidate common ground and the real differences given you have been introduced to formal rhetoric theory. What I enjoyed about this interview is reames highlighting shermers inability to consider other points of view and his unwillingness to change how he thinks about issues before latching on his particular closely held dogmas. My legal training included understanding negotiations which is what most lawyers spend their time doing. The Harvard negotiation project materials were my bible. Formal rhetoric theory was never part of my education. Should have been. Framing the issues would have benefited. Studying Western legal thinking took me to Plato and Aristotle and the whole of legal teaching is based on the Socratic method. Reames book puts all this in context placing it in contrast with the Sophists of ancient Athens.

The Egyptian Beatle was a symbol it was never worshiped just like the sun was a symbol of God, a circle representing infinity emanating light, so too was the Beatle a symbol of creation. The Egyptian Beatle would form a spherical ball made out of dirt (earth) and insert it's eggs inside so they can hatch and bring forth life (babies). So too did God create earth (sphere) to bring forth life.

No mention of monotheism being by far the oldest religion. The Egyptian Anna papyrus manuscript from 1,230 BC makes it clear that there is only one God, whole, perfect and incomprehensible. That the soul is eternal and does not die after physical death but lives on throughput many lifetimes learning new things and ascending higher and higher to infinite perfection. ♾️

This was a remarkably unsatisfying interview. She’s one of the few people who, after speaking, convinces me that her book is not worth looking at because she is so vague and makes such anodyne and ambiguous statements. I learned very little except that Cicero came up with four good categories to pay attention to regarding debates. I hope you follow up with another person who teaches about rhetoric in a more clear fashion.

I had to put this comment in as it is so pertinent to the subject. Most missiles these days are most certainly rockets that you can identify as to their load. But the bit i found missing during the whole thing was that today, most of these missiles are multi head missiles, that is to say the carry more than one bomb ( these are refered to as mervs or simple multi warhead missiles, where on re entry each warhead has a different target) This can i understand be anything up to eleven warheads. They re-enter as such speed they actually glow, and aslo are because of the slear re enter speed more than hard to track. These days there are even mervs that can in fact change their tragectory during this period of time and can avoid being taken out. A fact missed by most is that even being able to hit one of tbese does not stop the end result, it may just hasten the end result but does not change it. Taking about this subject as if we had ways of avoiding the outcome is both dishonest and very missleading. Again it has to be taken into account that each one has possibly different instructions as to its point of detination i.e. upper burst mid burst and ground burst, each one having a totally diferent effect here on the ground and very much so i terms of damage. I feel that going into detail about this subject, and it can be heard in this conversation, That the end result is in anyway safer than another, that is the most dangerous take of the whole thing. The biggest thing anyone can involve themselves in is the total destruction of ALL these weapons. As a race, we have clearly involved ourselves in creating the biggest bang for a buck, a point of view which should be taken out and hung as being the act of a total lunatic , or more importantly an act of deseration, a subject the U.S. really does show as being in need of some very deep education. By this i mean if you take the saying " Do unto others as you would have done to ones self" The biggest and most important thing we should ALL be part of is getting rid of these weapons totally. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TACTICAL NUCLEAR WEAPON the end result of any of these weapons is the same when looked at from the point of view of our planet, its end result leaves devastation for a period of time than none of mankind can change or overcome for far to many years to ever be considered safe. The only thing i think anyone with a sence of responsability is as follows. MANKIND WAKE UP, STOP BEING DELUSIONAL AND STOP LYING TO OTHERS AND OURSELVES, ANDVSTART TREATING EVERYONE WITH DOWN TO EARTH COMMON DECENCY If there was any reason at all for someone else paying attention to what humans do here on earth it has to be this very subject, because like it or not, there is only one who can say without fear of contradiction that they could in any way resue anyone during the stupidity of using these and that is our maker regardless of the name we use in describing them, and start think along the lines we humans take, why bother rescuing the idiot who let them loose in the first place if that all they can do well, again wake up world and make it possible to wake up each and every day to smellthe coffee, the clean air and the flowers, what we have been given is something so perfect, stop messingnit up!!!!!!

I have to comment a third time after what he just said. I was a "filed seeker" and I saw a lot of evidence to support material reductionism so I became that. I was never happier than those few years. When I came across new information on reality and the mind I reversed that position. I'd love to go back to being a material reductionist. It was just way easier.

I'll comment again on this video to say that I'm pretty sure that whatever the knowledge of you existing is fundamental. The "I am" feeling is what everything else is built upon, including anything physical. Like he said memories are not consciousness. Information gathered by the senses isn't consciousness. Even emotions are not consciousness. Those are things which can be experienced by consciousness but none are consciousness. That's why it's not disproving consciousness being the most fundamental thing by using brain damaged people whose whole personalty changed as the proof. Consciousness is a computer network and humans are individual computers on the network. If one computer stops working then other computer cannot talk to it and any information stored on that computer and not the network is lost. When you die the you which you thought you were dies. When your grandfather dies your grandfather is gone, but your grandfather's awareness that he exists does not die. The memory problem is a sticky one but I don't think memory is local but each individual is cut off from accessing the universal memory while alive, it only has access to the memories of it's open experiences. You cannot be an individual with access to all memory. Your identity would be swallowed up by the vastness of all memory, and that's pretty much what this whole thing is about, the singular experiencing Itself from the various angles of many individuals.
