He was my first kiss. He was Grand Marshall at the Christmas Hollywood Parade. My friends and I sat at the bleachers. His car came down the street. I ran across the street and jumped on the side of the car asked him to sign my album. He put his right hand on the side of my left cheek area and gave me my first long kiss. I felt faint as I tried to walk back to the bleachers. I was on the TV camera. I wonder if he remembers that evening.

A 70s song sung by a guy who is essentially a 50s singer - no strong emotions projected, only popular sentiment released under control. It's hard to pin down what's missing in this performance as Mathis has a note range and note-holding capability to match most. I think it all boils down to a lack of emotional identification. And all the technique in the world can't disguise that this lyric doesn't mean much to Johnny himself. Bar another paycheck. Three-piece suit, heavy shirt and showy tie all wrong for this sort of song. A guy with these sentiments wouldn't be much more than 20 and wouldn't be as well set up to afford such clothes. Slacks and loose shirt would be right for this number.
