I just listened to this performance. Generally speaking, I found it to be a decent rendition; however, two things in it bothered me. The first violins sounded very weak, and often I lost my bearings because I simply couldn't hear them. It's especially a problem in this work, with the strings and brass getting in each other's wsy. By the last bars being excessively rushed the ending was actually spoiled for me. This symphony, of all of Mahler's, is treacherously difficult to put across and I am of the opinion that it would not be performed as often as it does if not for that Adagietto. Nevertheless, the problems I note can be laid directly in Mahler's hands. To put it generally, Mahler's stated intentions and musical results do not lie together. The division into parts do not at all coincide with the tonal movements and tensions from movement to movement. Moreover, the mere quotation of ideas between movements does not necessarily draw them closer together. Incidentally, I have noted two apparent errors in the last movement in the form of wrong notes; possibly an oversight during the proofreading process, prior to sending the work to the publisher. These are sometimes corrected in performance or on recordings.

During the war, the Last Post and the Rouse were played on bugles, which had no valves
@Coltgov191145Ай бұрын
Yes, I understand thats how they work but it takes a ton of talent to make them sound this flawless just using using the mouth
@AndrewKnight-h8oАй бұрын
@@conanobrennan53 Although you can play a large variety of notes on the trumpet, for example, you will still need to use valves for some of them. Trombone's the same way - a slide is required to play most notes. The only reason he was able to play this with no other fingerings is because the music was written with specific notes that a trumpet can play without changing their fingering.
@conanobrennan53Ай бұрын
@@AndrewKnight-h8o lmao, since bugles were only invented after trumpets? cmon... more like taps, last post, reveille et. al were written based on what the bugle could do.

This is glorious. The musician creates such beautifully silken notes without any of the harshness that can be sometimes heard in TAPS. Just stunning. Bravo.
