You probably worked it out already but you are looking at the different timings of knockdowns at the start of the video, and I add here what I used to do when I was climbing to master with zangeif. The situation for me would come up after a DR cancel in to cr mp, cr d/f mp xx lariat. If i hold down forward I would get the earlier hitting lariat and if I let go of directions I would get the later hit. One use of this is to get more frame advantage on lariat knockdown which I would use to walk forward more and earn more drive meter after a drive rush combo. mid screen. Another way I would use the different frames is to mix up timings on pressure to make it harder for the opponent to guess in the corner, on their wake up.

Brick, You seem like an intelligent individual. You speak analytically. You are in Master rank. I am also a Gief main who just hit Plat 4 and I love finding Gief content makers to show me a thing or two. It's a process for me. Might I suggest something if you don't mind and perhaps you're doing this subconsciously. I wanted to approach this as an adult stranger to another adult stranger. I put thought into this You're over narrating each micro-exchange. It's really difficult to extract a lesson when from a player when you're being overly analytical and commentative. Ofcourse, this is your channel and you can just tell me "fuck off" but as a watcher, this is what's heavy on the ears. If you wanted to narrate, try finding pockets of exchanges where the opponent is reading you and you're performing counter-intel or some other unique moments or even random things you might think we would want to know. Hope to see you in Masters soon bro. One love (the dash-dash SPD is something i'm gonna start using haha)

with the blanka ball, maybe just pressing the st.hp on reaction and then holding or releasing based on whether its fake or real. That's how it works for me, but i usually take a moment to process whether its a real or fake blanka ball.

As a Sin player, this match up for both is just a game of waiting who messes up first to get nuked, both must respect the fact that the other can just drain a lot of their HP, what I usually do as Sin is state the fact that I know how to frame trap, just to then force Pot into guessing if I will follow up with a move, jump away and then get in again or do something like Gazelle step into jump to dodge Pot buster on certain circumstances. For me, when fighting Sin, he stops feeling like a character that must keep pressure and focuses more on spacing and taking advantage of every single miss-spacing or Pot's risky move to punish (j.H being a really really good way of spacing Pot or punishing as long as you don't jump too close and get grabbed)

The only complaint I have about these "Universal mechanics" is that whilst they function the same between all characters it means that because of their similar nature, it still inherently creates imbalance whilst making characters slightly less unique and it rewards less for deeply understanding parts of the roster. If the universal mechanic gives the same knockdown has this problem. If it's too long, characters with great setplay and high commitment - high reward tools get way more benefit, vice versa with meaty RPS or characters who are fast enough to check you for pressing. Also, it feels most games do not account for the system mechanic properly when designing for characters, which leads to stuff like Ken where the system mechanic adds more frustration to dealing with them by adding mental stack, rather than giving them a universal option because they need it or it helps round out their toolkit. Zangeif closes the distance with said mechanic, but said mechanic also helps push the better characters up, whilst depending on how it's implemented, hurts the unique feel of an individual character. Will say I do appreciate the modern design helping those get into fighting games, but I do think that there's fun to be had when a character "feels" distinct to play because of their weird inputs or attributes with universal mechanics which makes you feel more attached to the character, but that is personal taste. Cool vid though!

Mechanics like 66L skew the mid range game so much. Normally you'd have to use character specific moves to navigate neutral and earn offense. 66L is too often the best answer though. Plus on block and gives great combos on hit, especially with RS. Moves like these are normally balanced per character. Even with the slight nuance of 66L having risk of being whiff punished or leading to blocking situation cosa forward momentum (if whiffed). The risk reward and ease of access to these mechanics are too much. It absolutely serves to make the game simpler. You say it's a big deal to bait someones BC, but you don't get to actually capitalize on it. You might never get to cos you could lose the next interaction and they super and regain that BP. They're not being punished enough for how strong and safe the tool is. But it's made this way because developers realize how much of a skewed guessing game 66L pressure can be. So they give a bunch of overtuned mechanics to fight other overtuned mechanics. Even if you decide to save your BP, if you get hit it could take away up to 2 BPs during supers BEFORE the damage is applied. I think the game's too unstable on a mechanical level. I feel similarly towards SF6 and just modern games in general. They're easier to watch and play this way without a doubt, easier to make more characters stable, but I don't like how much I'm giving up in gameplay for a genre I really like.

I'm helping mod a very high powered FG that doesn't really have strong system mechanics that all characters can use as options for certain situations, and I can say that it creates a balancing nightmare where 10-0 and 9-1 matchups are not rare, and trying to mitigate those involves making changes to single characters, then an endless cascade of re-evaluating how a character change affects every other MU for the character other than the one you were trying to fix. Having strong common tools that every character can use in different situations to fill the holes in their kit with various levels of success is incredibly valuable. Also, speaking of Granblue, I really like how different characters want to use their BC. I think that my main Metera would go from low tier to nearly unplayable if she did not have the option to try to BC out of pressure and her only out was having enough meter to U DP. It creates a really though choice between going the BC and making you more vulnerable next interaction or just being able to survive the current pressure. Other characters can use them a lot more aggressively when they don't rely on them for defense, so you can do things like the Ladiva BC resets.

At 7:18 do you ever consider going into level 1 there to get a burnout? I know geifs supers are lacking in utility apart from level 3. But considering the drive gauge swing you get from a counter DI it might be worth it.

Honestly this video helped recontextualise BC in some great ways, my favourite guard cancel in fighitng games is yrc in strive, it's very strong, helps protect you from a lot of things, and is difficult to bait in a lot of situations, requiring commital call outs, but is -16 on block, leading to a full punish. (and if it htis it is just a +10 guard crush so you force a basic strike throw or just a turn depending on spacing.) BC being + on block and safe on spotdodge bugged me for a while, I kinda learned to tolerate it, but I did often wish I got a chance to punish it, but the idea of "it means you get to be more aggressive with your resources because they're down on theirs permanently" helped a lot.

I like bravery point and drive gauge, because they add complexity and tension to their respective games, without adding too much structural complication. Both could be better, IMO, but they feel like an improvement to me. I don't like GGS wild assaults, burst gauge or bonus mechanic. It is just too many disjointed parts to manage, so much it doens't matter if they are universal. And I simply despise Tekken 8's heat. It adds structural complication, while removing complexity from the gameplay, cutting uniqueness from the characters playstyles and their win conditions, flattening player expression to a dead line, rising the floor skill without control and lowering the skill ceiling to the point it drowns advanced competition into chaos. Heat can be good, I think, but they still need to tweak it a lot to get there.

I disagree. Or at least when they aren't handled well. The additon of Wild Assault to Strive has made the game WAY less fun. Losing burst both in a string and especially when I block fucking sucks and ruins my feelings for the rest of the set. I also hate the Bravery point system in Granblue. Most people only point to Brave counter while I hate the system in general tho I hate raging strike the most. Basically instant Losing if your points drop to 1 or zero is stupid. It'd be 1 thing if it was just a resource but why must I also take more damage with less of them? And Raging strike is the worst goddamn move in the game and EVERYONE has it. I hope you didn't brave counter twice before eating one or God forbid be hit by a second one in the same round. It removing a bravery point on block AND it requiring another one to escape any follow ups is overkill. I would honestly rather the Bravery point system not exist at all.

It's kinda funny how the 'old heads' are complaining about universal mechanic when games like KoF have universal roll distances, everyone can jump and hop, damn near every character has the same combo structure. It's more of a full circle of we are coming back around to how games used to be, the problem is some of these games have characters that don't get much from those said mechanics, and neutral skip attacks are a poor substitute for just 'Have better walk speed' or 'Don't have different dash start-ups per character' or just simply letting every character run. Granblue is in a pretty OK spot right now, I feel like some slight changes to being about to punish certain big moves would fix ALOT. And maybe clash levels need a rework but that's some deep stuff.
