Great looking pit. Just wandering how hot those tires at fire box get being a non insulated fire box? I built an offset with non insulated firebox and the wheels get unreasonably hot. This next smoker I’m building I was thinking of going insulated firebox just to combat the heat issues with the tires. Thoughts?

Thank you. I’m getting ready to build a 250g offset and was toying with the idea of insulating the fire box but kind of thinking along the line of what you just discussed. You’ve convinced me to go uninsulated. I’ve probably only built 3 so far and I’ve learned from each.

Depends on the material for sure. If it’s pitted, then sand off what you can cause you ain’t using filler on it. I’m a fan of slick paint like Jambo pits.What Tuffy uses 😊

Great videos. But I typically only cook for the wife and I. Pretty much every smoker I see especially on channels like this are absurdly HUGE and the cuts of meat used would feed us for a month. LOL. My little side smoker is probly poorly designed and probly has all kinds of problems. But I have learned to use it and use it very well. Sadly it is beginning to rust through in places and I will have to learn all over again! For us size matters and small is great. Uses way less wood too.

I am not a "smoker" but my brother in law asked to make him one. I have the means to cut,weld or any fabrication needed. I currently have a "barrel" that is basically 1/4" plate that has been folded over and welded into a "barrel" It has a diameter of 44" on both ends and stands 5ft tall. I was going to cut it up for other projects but figured we could make the firebox in the bottom and leave it vertical. I'm just searching You tube to get an idea of how this works and smokers are built.

Have a question and not sure if I can ask it properly without talking with my hands... 250 gallon with offset and it has two sets of grills, one upper and one lower set, as I tend to smoke lots of cheese. I have a baffle to deflect some heat and keep that smoke flowing nicely across the blocks of cheese, reguardless of fire box management its the heat always becomes an issue. I sit ice on top of baffle to cool things down but here's my question... Drill a hole on each side of the fire box, towards the upper section of the sides... Then run a piece of pipe thru it and weld it closed so no smoke releases. Basically like a heat exchanger tube that I could plug or open to deflect heat out of box. Running pipes thru the top of the fire box to give the heat some place to go but still allow the smoke to travel thru normally Is this half brained idea even plausible and I'm just curious on your thoughts on this
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder 20 күн бұрын
@@brokenbravo83 totally plausible. However, I don’t have enough information to tell you if what you see in your mind will work the best. You’re correct you want to be able to get rid of as much heat as possible and just retain the smoke. One way to do this would be to build a smaller fire, but then you wouldn’t get enough airflow through the pit possibly I recommend that you post pictures of your smoker in our private website smokerbuilderu.com and I’m sure we can help you fine-tune your design in there

QUESTION, EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, I GET BACKDRAFT IN MY FIREBOX, MY FIREBOX IS ONLY A 4 FOOT SECTION OF A 250 GALLON PROPANE. TANK, I SEE THAT THAT'S WHAT MOST BUILDERS USE INSIDE OF A FIVE HUNDRED GALLON TANK AND MAKE IT INSULATED. THE HOLE FROM MY FIREBOX INTO MY COOK. CHAMBER IS 12 INCH DIAMETER ON MY STACK SIDE. I HAVE A 12 INCH 90, GOING DOWN TO A 10 INCH PIPE AND 5 FEET OF 10 INCH. PIPE FROM THE GROUND TO THE TOP OF THE STACK.IT'S TEN FEET AFTER ABOUT 4 HOURS, MY TEMPERATURES START BEING OFF IN DIFFERENT ZONES. I WILL GET BACKDRAFT THROUGH MY FIREBOX. AND THINGS JUST START GOING HAYWIRE. IF THAT FIREBOX WOULD HAVE BEEN INSULATED, WOULD THAT HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE FOR AIRFLOW N SIZE OF AIR COMING THROUGH THE FIREBOX. And also, do you think it might be the size of the stack... I made a bad way as i'm trying to start a restaurant

@SmokerBuilder 22 күн бұрын
@@PatrickBishop-p4y it would really help to have pictures of this. If you could join our site@ smokerbuilderu.com You’ll be able to post pictures and explain a little more detail. However, my assumption is you’re talking about 1000 gallon offset smoker 4 foot of a 250 gallon propane tank is about half the size the fire box should be. I know a lot of guys are doing it that way, but I get a lot of complaints from the customers that purchased those pits with exactly the scenario you’re describing The bottom line is this is all about a high volume of gentle airflow in order to even out temperatures inside the smoker Your smokestack size doesn’t sound too bad to me, but your fire box should be bigger I would also hazard to guess that the opening between your firebox and chamber is very small as well. This is referred to as the throat opening. They’re simply not enough surface area open between a 30 inch diameter fire box and a 41 inch diameter cook chamber to get a big enough throat opening. So they are almost all too small. The backdraft you see come out of your fire box is because the fire is trying to draw a lot of air into it, but it can’t all go through that opening into your cook chamber When the throat opening is too small, you wind up with less volume of air at a higher velocity, going into the cooking chamber The Backdraft is actually air that can’t go through that hole spilling out of the firebox door or air inlet Insulating your fire box would not help the situation
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder 22 күн бұрын
@@PatrickBishop-p4y think of it like a traffic jam where four lanes of traffic are being forced to combine down into one lane of traffic. This is what happens at the throat opening
@PatrickBishop-p4y
@PatrickBishop-p4y 22 күн бұрын
@SmokerBuilder so in this situation is this fixable? Can the old firebox be cut off?And the half of five hundred gallon b welded back on, there is a vertical baffle at the throat as well. Save Pour in the first 4 hours of a cook. Maybe 5 hours. Everything is even everything runs beautiful. And then, after a while, temperatures start fluctuating, and different things start happening. I cannot do a long cook.It gets too much smoke on the meat

@peewee3889
@peewee3889 17 күн бұрын
You need air in the tanks if the tank heats up the gas vapor will expand and your gas tank will start releasing vapor through the pressure relief valve . Here in sfl 80% is the max gas level after that the 20% is space needed for gas expansion
