Love the woodworking but the attaching method takes away from conventional methods.

It seems that the whole structure is fixed to the outer brick leaf only. Given its weight (oak + tiles) and the wind load, isn't it too much for a 1/2 brick wall? Sorry, I don't know the UK Building Regulations, so my question might sound silly🙂
@bigdec1 Жыл бұрын
Hi I think Alex did get a fixing through to the inner leaf as the fixing went in quite deep. Kindest regards Declan

This is really nice work. I'm just curious how long are the fasteners and were they necessarily lagged into the building or was the chemflex I believe is what it was callled what you used to stabilize the bolt into the building? And how far out onto the patio does the roofline cover? I really appreciate your response!
@bigdec12 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for having a look at our video. Chemfix 150 mm deep was sufficient, we got a good hold. And the roof projected 1metre out. Also the fact that the roof section was bolted to the wall provided a solid anchor. I felt confident that it was well fixed. Kindest regards Declan

do we need 3 rafters considering roof light weight materials?
@bigdec12 жыл бұрын
Good question, you probably could get away with 2 rafters but I think overall when you are standing there. I think 3 looks better. Over time you may have a bit of sag underneath. Yes you could even use thinner materials all over, but it really looks quality as it is. Thanks for the comment. Many thanks Declan.

This has to be the go to video for timber framing. Having said that, at 10:34 that was scary how the mortise was showing and only just covered. Or is that normal? Seemed like you slightly back cut with your chisel on those cheeks to make a really nice clean joint. Oh lastly, so nice to see someone actually cutting everything with space to breathe. I've seen so many of these where the person is beating the crap out of it to make it go in. I know it probably will shrink up a bit, but it just doesn't look good.
@shinigamilee59153 жыл бұрын
Have you ever tried lightly scoring the edges with a razor blade by laying it flat on the surface before doing the final chisel work? I wonder if it might make the edges just a little bit cleaner and save a few minutes for you.

It's a mafell. They are amazing tools. If your interested Northwood forestry in Sussex is closing and have a morticer and couple of big planers and also a special narrow bandsaw as some of the lots. I think auction closes mid May 2012. If you like turning there are some once in a lifetime lots of oak and elm burr. Many are too big to lift on your own.
