Just got my teacup chihuahua 2 days ago, she is so sweet and loving. I was over a friends family members house and she had a lot of dogs and the Chihuahua was in the cage literally laying in her own feces that obviously has been in that cage for weeks due to how dried up it was, it was so sad I offered to pay her $50 to take the dog home and she let me, so now I want you to try to figure out how to properly care for her and give her all the love she needs

We took in our rescue in Dec 2019 and so many of the things you told resonate with what we went through with him. We adapted to him. Not going out much with friends, he's never alone for a long time (also bc of his stomach issues that can have a suddlen flare up), living more remotely. Sometimes it's hard but I'd never in a million years choose a different life. I would give everything up for him.

Thanks for making and sharing this. This 'relaxation' protocol mentions the need for mastering two other foundational protocols before doing this one, is there a reason you're not utilising the 'taking a breath' protocol before the treats?

In my experience, incorporating TAB is not always necessary in this process for most of my clients. 👍🏻 But it’s a good question!

I adopted a dog that I thought was a random black lab mix, but it turned out that she is a coated Xoloitzcuintly. I feel like the luckiest person on earth. The shelter had no idea what she was. Her breed is absolutely incredible. I adopted her to train her as a service dog. I've trained many dogs over the years but this one is for me. She's one of the best breeds to train as a service dog because they are incredibly tuned into their owner. She's about 10 months old and was completely untrained. I have been able to start from the ground up, so she's only learning things that I want her to in the ways I want her to. I really like your training style and attitude. Keep spreading the good word of positive reinforcement. It is so incredibly much more effective than being mean. Xolo's are extremely sensitive and easily frightened. Whoever had her before me clearly had a temper and not very much patience. My first hurdle was getting her to understand that training can be fun and not terrifying. I'm 54 years old and have always been a little high strung. I have a laundry list of things, both mental and physical, that are wrong with me. Her temperament and everything else about her are just perfect for me. I've had several dogs over my lifetime and have always gone for rescues. I feel like I hit the lottery with this one. She's a purebred and she is one of the rarest breeds on earth. I'm actually very glad that she doesn't have the hairless gene, because the few health weaknesses that they have are all attached to the hairless gene. For instance, the hairless variety has deformed teeth and all sorts of dental problems. The coated variety doesn't have that abnormality. I think the majority of people who get dogs should go for rescues, but I feel very, very blessed to have found my girl.

Great for many new or even more experienced dog owners! I would like to see more detail somewhere on the licky mat as well as what you use around the house that people could use as enrichment items. That felt a little disappointing, as you didn't mention anything. But I did like how you presented the ideas! Thank you for putting this video out.

oh my gosh, this story came just in time for me, recently having adopted a rescue dog with many issues. I am going to listen to it whenever I get frustrated or afraid of what could happen. You are the only dog trainer I have ever respected. Your story and advice had me in total tears fighting back sobbing. Thank you for saying that it's OK to treat every dog like an individual and that there's not a one size fits all in training dogs. Huge blessings to you, Nia, and all of the dogs and people you work with. I only wish you lived in my town😊

Personally, I would push back on advice like that - especially if it is under the guise of “the dog taking charge” when they lead. Dogs walk faster than us by the nature of being quadrupeds, and take in the environment largely through their nose. It’s not species appropriate to require a strict heel for an entire walk. Sure, it’s great to teach a short duration heel to pass distractions and bring your dog close to you, but having an arbitrary rule of “never walking in front of you”, I would argue, has no place in modern dog training. I would encourage you to look at a variety of training practices to see what feels right for you - but also, training practices that align with our modern understanding of canine behavior. This is an unregulated industry, and there is a LOT of questionable advice floating around - especially from folks who have not done recent continuing education.

LOL! Water cookies is so great! I just got me a rattie rescue and ice was on of my first tries at a fun thing for her- and she loves chasing ice across the floor. I love all of your ideas! She's a whiz at puzzles I purchased. Today I tried the knotted cloth thing. She loves it! But she destroyed the cloths on her evening meal. I supervised her but I think we need a less destructive thing. I'm going to try one of those rubbery, flip inside out to fill toys. I love the idea of filling up a bunch of toys and freezing for the week ahead. I don't have that many toys yet. I've been searching out good ones. There are so many dog toys that are just a waste of money for how long they can last AND the toll on the environment because of how long they must take to eventually break down. Learning with my dear new friend is really great. I think she's happy with me too. Keeping a look out for more good ideas.

I just rescued a dog yesterday evening a tiny yorkie mix breed she is currently 2 months and 3lbs , the shelter did spay her yesterday morning she came home on liquid pain meds . She barely wanted to eat, drink , very shakey , if we walk near her she walks away but if i walk away from her she will follow me or she in the play pen she will whin if she don’t see me standing right by the play pen . She does have a metal crate with the door always open in her play pen . I take her out in the back yard she haven’t learned how to walk on a leash with a harness yet . The first night she laid in my lap to sleep for 4-6 hours

I rescued a 4 year old female Jack chi mix. Little background info provided. She may have been in mill situation. She is unspayed, looks like maybe bred, no socialization, understands no commands, doesn't understand leash. Pottying has been hit or miss. She's been with us 2 weeks. Very attached to me, very afraid of my husband. Timid, shaking, afraid of everything around her. Food motivated, squirrel triggered. Not sure where to begin. Have been sitting with her quietly for 2 weeks.

i adopted a super high energy dalmatian pit bull mix and the first week i was at a loss and felt like i made a mistake. I decided nope im going to learn how to deal with him in the right way. My dude is the most fun freakin dog on the planet and 3 weeks later he was wildly different than he was. I spent a lot of time training him and managing his behavior and now he's so much better and manageable.

Thank you so much for this. I just found your channel -- my partner and I are long distance (I'm in the US, he's in Malaysia) and he just had to inadvertently take in an adult shelter dog. I still have the dog I took in from him when he had to leave the country a few years ago, so now knowing we'll have a second dog (that we'll have to move all the way across the world no less) has been a little overwhelming! Way moreso for my partner handling this new dog than for me of course. I've been doing lots of training research to help him get through this from afar, as potty training has been the struggle, and stumbled across some of your videos and have now been watching so many of them. Our first dog has struggled with some fear and reactivity issues, and it truly felt like what worked was similar to what you are saying: adapting to him and putting him in positions where he feels supported and can succeed realistically. Our relationship has deepened a million-fold just from that, and this video also made me cry from how much it resonated. Thanks for sharing and thank you for all the videos!!

On Day 2, 3, 4, etc do you start from the beginning of Day 1 and go through all of the tasks up to whichever day you're at? Or is each day just working on that days tasks with no repeat of previous days?
@TheKindCanine6 ай бұрын
Once your dog has mastered the task set for Day 1, you move onto Day 2 (and do not repeat Day 1, unless you’re working in a new environment - in which case, I would consider starting back at Day 1 to help with generalization and work your way up from scratch). I hope this helps!

Hi- love your videos and the positive energy of your training. I’m wondering if the first part of this video got cut off? It seems to start mid way thru. This info is super pertinent to our situation and I’d love to know what you suggest before the start point here. Thanks. PS- for me it’s starting with you saying “as your dog settles in…”. Looking for more info on dogs that aren’t yet settled in.

Thank you for for talking about treat/retreat! I've been recommending it for years as just an owner, and will definitely be recommending it to my clients once I'm certified. It really doesn't have anywhere near the recognition it should have. I also really like Chirag Patel's approach to first being introduced to a nervous/anxious dog in a small space like a vets office or something (if you're interested, the video is called "making friends with "shy" dog")

Functions of specific behaviors are important, and the video that this short is pulled from is explicitly talking about dogs who are struggling with fear-based behaviors around people or who are clinically anxious. Working with a dog who has been bred to protect would look fundamentally different, since the function of their behavior is different than what I am illustrating here. Hope this helps.
