A documentary without the slightest respect for the culture of Romani witches. Sensationalist, with a montage that stigmatizes the practices without actually knowing them. Fast food imagery that wants to satisfy a shallow hunger for cheap horror movies. Roman culture is much more complex, rich and philosophically sophisticated. I felt bad watching it.

They live a European lifestyle in their dwelling, drinking tea and using butter. They look admixed. I don't see why they do what they do, they are Europeans trying to be Saami, they are plastic Saami. In old photos the Saami did not live in tepees but a wooden framed building covered by sods and plants. Everything they use is not Saami, those iron pots, metal knives, bread is not Saami. Look I think their attempt at being more authentic Saami is laudable, but they cannot be authenitic in the 21st century, it is like me becoming a hunter gatherer but still using metal objects, textiles made of cotton or wool, living in a house with water and electricity.

This is fascinating. I am English, but when researching my family history, I found I was descended from Rognvald, a Norse warrior, born probably in the 990s in Norway, who was made Lord of Ladoga as a reward for escorting the Norwegian Princess Ingrid Ada to Kyev to marry Prince Yaroslav. Rognvald acted with great honour, as he was in love with the Princess himself, but he married the Lady Ingoborg, which may have been her lady in waiting, and raised a family in Ladoga. His third son, Broese went to Normandy, built a castle at a place which became known as Brix, became Christian and took the name Robert. He came to England as captain of the gaurd to Queen Emma, the Norman mother of King Edward the Confessor. He had 2 sons. The eldest Robert de Brus went to Scotland when the exiled Prince David became King there, and was the 8th great grandfather of Robert the Bruce who became King of Scotland. His younger brother Adam settled on the East Coast of Yorkshire in England, and remained loyal to the English King, changing his name from de Brus to Skelton, after the name of the village he was Lord of. I am descended from this branch of the family.

I know Baba Albina. In 2017, she was invited to sell at Festival of Folk Arts, which is Budapest's annual late summer festival, held in Buda Castle Quarter. Sakhalin was the foreign guest of 2017's edition; ethnologists Ágnes Kerezsi (Hungary) and Nataliya Novikova (Russia) took care of getting the handcrafters here, Nivkhs, Uil'tas and Nanais mixed. The youngest one Ol'ga Reznik, a Nivkh one, is my Facebook friend. The two trad Nivkh instrumental music pieces edited into sync under the table scene (fiddle called tyn'ryn by Ol'ga A. Nyavan, percussion called tya-tya ch'kar by a group of elderly ladies from N'ekrasovka), has been collected by Henri Lecomte (Paris) and his team in 1996, and published under Buda Musique's series Musique du Monde. I have the recording on CD, thanks to late Alexandra Bookhouse where I've come across MdM in the mid-2000s; that's the album which has got me interested in Siberian indigenuous peoples' culture. Proud to know these amazing people and cultural treasures!
