Just before you mentioned the price, I was reading another internet site while listening. Then I heard something that sounded like ‘29 dollars’. I thought maybe he said something like ‘229 dollars’ and rewound the video a bit. Unbelievable! For that price this great library is a gift and other ‘librarians’ would sell this for the price I thought I heard. I'm still not sure if it was the best cello library and I'll have to play it myself to decide. But it's certainly one of the best libraries, and when you factor in the price, this one certainly gets the highest rating. All articulations, without exception, sound very good and very usable. The celli (probably also the violins) sustains and legatos are probably more in the direction of dramatic and somewhat slow than virtuoso fast, which is how I prefer them, and you played them the way I wanted to hear them. Thanks for the entertaining and informative video. PS: I had to laugh at the celli staccatos (and I'm still smiling) because the mic was probably resonating with your very enthusiastic playing and you probably couldn't hear it with the headphones.

Hope this is viewed as constructive criticism but you should have used the close mic and the room mic. The close mic is important with that library imo. Anyway, thanks for the video. edited: At least you did it at the end of the video.

I dont really like the library, too expensive for what it really delivers, you seriously just pay for the Company and that its recorded in Abbey Road. All this "OMG ITS ABBEY ROAD" is dumb as hell, since you will not hear the difference to f.e. Berlin Symphonic Strings with a Cinematic Rooms tail in the mix. You can let any library sound like its in abbey road if you know what youre doing, its a matter of skill. Most people dont have the ear to learn this skill because it requires imense focus to hear the smallest details in sound. For me, symphonic strings is a better library over all, legatos are better and the room is also amazing!

Very nice demo Tom! I was actually comparing these strings with Cinematic Studio Strings yesterday, and while those do have a very realistic default sweet spot, you basically have to take what they give you, because you don’t have nearly as much control as with the Abbey Road instruments which allow far more creative decision making. If I have to trade a little tonal realism in one area for deeper control and an easy workflow everywhere else, I‘ll take that deal every time. I agree with you that the ARO lyrical legato is more fun to play, but when you need bow changes or accented starts, it’ll be great to have access to the performance legatos. I actually think the ARO basses are one of the highlights, with their richness and super clean intonation. btw…I put the Core version on my laptop and was really happy to have access to that less resource hungry version on the go. I also appreciated the fully scalable UI which I could fit to my 14 inch screen really easily or blow up on my desktop monitor. These are subtle workflow conveniences I’m happy to pay for. I think we‘re all at the beginning of finding out what the library is capable of. Cheers!

You know, I actually think what is actually making people prefer CSS over this is the price tag. I am not a professional and I can no way ever conceive picking this up. It is too expensive, and it is too big. The hard drive space is huge and there is no method provided to download only necessary mic positions like how Orchestral Tools Sine Player allows... So yeah, I mean, I would have loved to have these in my collection, but don't think I ever will. Also, with Pacific Strings, Vista and Cinematic Strings, I am spoiled for choice to get realistic and incredible Strings :)

Buy the way, sometimes I do something similar but with other libraries, this is a good way to get natural sound for your string section. As for me, if I’ll get the BBS symphonic orchestra I not sure that I’ll mix them, you can achieve so quality sounds using only this tool…but from the other hand, CSS give me feel more studio sound, BBS - one of the best music hall and my favourite orchestra…I guess it’s a real reason to blend them and it’s sounds really good 👍

Hi Tom. Found your channel just a couple hours ago, and have already watched a few of your videos, especially the ones with the sketch to mock-up orchestration on Logic. Subscribed as well. Very helpful and interesting to see another composer/orchestrator creating their sketches. If you don't mind answering, may I ask how do your work-hours look like when you're working on a sketch? Do you finish all your work in one sitting (if it's not too big), or do you take breaks and finish it over several hours/days? Also, how do you manage to not get distracted? May I also suggest/request making a video about time management and being effective while working? Sincere thanks to you. :)
@TomHarroldMusic
@TomHarroldMusic 3 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. Generally, the sketching is completed pretty quickly for a short piece like this - maybe an idea has been permeating in my head for a few days and (without realising it) I've been absent-mindedly sketching it in my head when not at my desk, so when I come to sketch I have a pretty good idea of what it's going to be (somehow!). Distraction is something I've always struggled with, but I have a few techniques - no phone at desk, no social media at desk, etc. I use some discipline here and it works to keep the procrastination at bay. RE time management, I use an app called Motion which is like an AI personal assistant - I can plug in projects, deadlines, aims and it is like a virtual personal assistant and plans my work days - extremely useful for productivity. I may do a video on it soon!

Thanks for that demonstration Tom. One tooltip and one question: You mention legatos not re-engaging and thus work with seperate tracks for that sustain option. You working with the 1.7 version? I first thought there was a bug but in communication with customer service it turned out I should have read the manual. Might be that in your case too you arre hitting some keyswitch velocity threshhold or other midi cc automation switching off your legato. People keep pointing out how beautyfully simple CSS and CSSS UIs are. However, I believe that is more a fault than an advantage because basic principles of these VSTs' functionality are hidden, can create programming mistakes, even mask some great features (like alternative bow change legato). A few more buttons and tool tips in the UI would have helped the product, which is great already, but has even more potential than is obvious at first site. Now to my question: You appear to have arpeggios on the solos in the second half, I wonder what it would sound like if they were more prominent on some tutti section(s)?

I think I know what @AsiaOdin might be referring to. Also what you Tom mean with bumpy. Like most people I feel CSS is super expressive because of the vibrato style, butter smooth envelope, legato programming and baked in stroke dynamics. However, I do find that CSS strings are not tolerating dynamics CC amplitudes that other instruments cope with. As a result you have some of the famous "suction effect" that some other VSTs have in every transition, and that can seem like a reverse note I guess.

Sounds awesome! Effective and elegant... That is, as long as your parts aren't moving much or very fast, at which point the variable CSS legato latency becomes an issue. I have and love BBCSO and CSS but with bigger more complex pieces, I would never have time to layer like this. Which is why I invested in VSL"s Duality Strings which does all the layering set up for you out of the box.
