i love this ship and fortunate to have traveled many miles from the point of africa to spend 5 days on board her back in the early 90"s - unlike the big u she was never a ship her sung her own praise - rather she sailed the oceans of the world with dignity grace and leaving a legacy that few ships ever had - thank you for the insight to her

The Queen Elizabeth was a great ocean liner too people forget that, it made its maiden voyage in the same year i think.

Long live the Queen! She has served her Country for over thirty years and nie she is the only witness of the excellent years, when multi-funnelled liners crossed the Ocean on a regular basis. I AM myself a sort of her biographer here in Poland, the country of another great liner, the BATORY. That ship that once sailed on song with a group of British children evacuated from fighting Island to more safe Australia. 'Mary' was LONG AS A STREET AND LOFTY AS A TOWER. Went through all the dangers of both the sea and the war, the last multi-stack liner in history. Multi-stacked express liners were 'everyday's bread' to workers of Vulcan at what was then the greatest harbour city od Prussia (Stettin/Szczecin). One of their multi-stacked liners did even survive a collision with an Atlantic iceberg in 1907. ♍🇵🇱🇬🇧👍😊

If I die, I want "The Last Great Cruise" to be played at my funeral In that video, the Captain of Queen Mary is heartbroken in letting her go I hope that maybe, as opposed to an end, it is a beginning And that like Queen Mary's arrival in California I will have a thousand tiny boats greet me Maybe my dad will be at the helm of one Maybe Jonghyun will be on another, holding my cat, Boo, in his arms Maybe my auntie, asking me if she can see her engagement ring once again Maybe my grandfather, asking how my mother is And maybe, when I see everyone again However or whenever I see you It will be on the bow of a ship And we will watch the waves crash And the dolphins play And the sunset become stars Or maybe, they're just fireworks

From what I understand, queen mary was the most elegant, well crafted, exotic liner to ever twist up the seas…. Not sure anyone could’ve predicted the undignified ending that awaited this classy old girl!!….
@oenthusiast
@oenthusiast Ай бұрын
I wouldn't say it is an undignified ending. There have been repairs and refurbishments taking place since Long Beach regained direct control of the ship again in 2021, and the ship is looking better, and more closely replicating its historical appearance, than it has for years. All the profits from the ship, millions of dollors, are being reinvested in the ongoing restoration. Long Beach loves the Mary, and it has been very popular since it reopened to the public last year.

shame I wasn't alive back then because I just so happen to live in Southampton so its a shame the ship isnt in service anymore. if it was docked in Southampton that would have been awesome. but maybe ill go to long beach one day to pay Queen Mary a visit

People didn't "cruise" then; they traveled by ship, to reach a destination. Other than that, an interesting video.

The city took back operational control from the neglectful lease operators in 2021, and it is being brought back to what it should be. It began to reopen at the beginning of 2023 and it's going very well. The ship is getting lots of visitors and looking better all the time.

@@brentrussell780 She's in much better condition since the City of Long Beach took control back in 2019. They got a lot of necessary and long-neglected work done during the pandemic closure. There's a lot still to do (most obviously the forward deck that needs to be restored/replaced and is temporarily covered with plywood for safety reasons, and the lifeboats which are in very bad shape) but the hull is sound, there's a new boiler system, the hotel staterooms are being refurbished, and the public areas onboard are being restored closer to their original appearance. The Observation Bar is gorgeous.

What fuel was this steam powered ship powered by? Was this coal fired or oil fired??
@stuartmcrobbie8954
@stuartmcrobbie8954 4 ай бұрын
Heavy fuel oil, or known as marine Bunker-C. She burned about 1000 tons a day at typical liner route full sea speeds of an avg of 28.5 kts.

The man who is crushed by the watertight door, was playing a game, known to sailors as chicken. This was a game in which a crewmember would jump in and out of the door to see how many times he could get through it before it closed. The man playing chicken was unfortunately crushed because he jumped into the door right as it came closed and was killed.

In 1976 we moved to Long Beach CA just down the coast line from where they parked Her. My Brother and me used to go on board for free at night. You could go down 2 decks. It was very impressive in the quality of its construction and giant size. We went onboard her about 8 times in the 9 months we lived there as kids. Don't know if they allow that anymore.

My dad was drafted in 1944. He was in an Army infantry division. When he left the east coast for Europe, he was on the Queen Mary. The Queen May had been converted into a troop ship to transport American troops to Scotland. My dad spoke of how crowded the ship was. There were so many soldiers that they ate in shifts. My dad mentioned the seasickness that plagued the troops. He mentioned the vomiting in the lower decks and the smell. He said he tried to stay on the upper deck for fresh air as much as possible. My father died in 1980. My mother wanted to tour the Queen Mary as my father had told her so much about going overseas on it. She got her wish and toured the Queen Mary in the early 1990s when it was at Long Beach.

Minimal under keel clearances, such as in harbors, could allow mud, sand, wheels, etc to be sucked up into the bottom sea chests. Created a mess and clogging the intakes, piping, grates, etc. Thus reducing cooling water flow.

what is sad is with all the money our government gives away (launders) It would be a drop in the bucket for them to foot the bill to totally restore this ship and keep this attraction alive for generations to come. What was it? 100 BILLION to the Ukraine? I'm thinking that would have covered some of the cost. (sarcasm)
