What about bringing a pup into a home with guinea pigs living there?

Introducing a Rottweiler to a home with guinea pigs can be tricky. It's important to ensure that both pets are supervised and that the dog is properly trained and socialized to coexist peacefully with smaller animals.

@knight59 i adopted one at 2 yrs old, who was found in the street by previous owner so they said, she hasn't bitten anyone that I know of and in a year she has made great progress on Walks but I'm struggling to find a vet willing to work on such a protective dog. Any advice when they don't socialize early on?
@knight59
@knight59 2 сағат бұрын
That’s amazing that you adopted her and have been so patient with her progress! It sounds like she’s found a loving home where she feels safe, and that’s already a huge win for both of you. Protective dogs can be a challenge, especially if they missed early socialization, but don’t lose heart-you’re already making a difference in her life! For finding a vet, look for one who has experience with reactive or working breeds. Some mobile vets even do home visits, which might reduce stress for both your pup and the vet. You can also try muzzle training in a positive way, so she associates it with treats and safety rather than fear. Slow introductions to new environments, people, and controlled socialization can help, too-no pressure, just at her pace. It’s clear she trusts you, and with time, she’ll keep making progress. Every small step forward is worth celebrating. You’ve given her a second chance, and that’s truly beautiful. Keep going-you’re doing an incredible job! ❤️🐾

@knight59 i had a Rottweiler lab and German shepherd/pitt before since they were pups until they turned 15. They died shortly after one another. I planned to travel, not adopt. I can't have kids, they were mine. But I dreamt this Mal and never seen the movies, I thought it was from rescue's posts I shared but when I asked the Facebook friend who needed to rehome her, it felt like déjà vu. I feel it is a mission from God. I discovered Victoria Stilwell, and the positive reinforcement training helped, because i can't raise my voice or she acts like shes begging me to not be mad. Even when i say "sit" she looked scared, like something bad was about to happen. Thank you! For your reply I'll write it all down. I tried the muzzle and she wears it for a minute then gets out of it but I'll keep working on all of it. She's a blessing.

Don't create a false image about Malinois that they are "a little smaller" than a German shepherd, usually they are dogs that are on a military diet, so they are "created" in that mold due to their military needs, I have a Malinoi that is 70 cm tall and still growing, strong and robust.

@@knight59 Most of the things mentioned aren't just a "GS-thing" but generally a "DOG-thing". We have an American Bluebay Shephard who senses coyotes crossing our land. We live in a city suburb built in the middle 1950's more coyotes have appeared in the last 5yrs, than ever before. Walking the streets even during the day and evening before sunset. The opportunist in them I suppose. My concern is the smaller animals we have as pets. Our 2yr old Shephard is coming into his own though and has displayed a more tamed aggression. I was wondering if his own wolf and shephard instincts were to credit this because of his age? Also, I wonder if he would be a match for a lone coyote or a pack or if it was enough to have a standoff and bark aggressively to send them off? I heard in the video it should be supervised, but we let our dog have full reign over our yard without supervision. (Yes we have supervised the interactions between him and cayotes just unsure when we haven't.) Should we be concerned?
@knight59
@knight59 2 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing your experience with your American Blue Bay Shepherd! It’s fascinating how these dogs, with their wolf and shepherd lineage, develop their instincts over time. Your Shepherd’s heightened awareness of coyotes is completely natural, and as he matures, he’s likely becoming more confident in assessing potential threats. His "tamed aggression" could be a sign that he's learning when to stand his ground versus when to avoid unnecessary confrontation-both crucial survival instincts in a dog with working and guardian traits. Regarding his ability to face off against a coyote or a pack, it’s important to note that while a lone coyote may be intimidated by a large, strong dog, a pack is a different challenge altogether. Coyotes are incredibly intelligent, strategic, and opportunistic. Even if they retreat after a barking standoff, they may return when they perceive a better opportunity-especially if your dog is left alone outside. A single dog, no matter how strong, can be overwhelmed by multiple coyotes, as they are known to lure dogs into traps by leading them into an ambush. Since you allow your Shepherd to roam your yard unsupervised, it’s worth considering the risks, particularly during dawn, dusk, and night when coyotes are most active. While your dog’s presence can deter them, it’s not a guaranteed safety measure. Coyotes are highly adaptable and have been known to attack dogs, even those of similar size, especially in suburban areas where food sources (like small pets, outdoor pet food, or garbage) attract them. A few things to consider for added safety: Supervised Outdoor Time - You mentioned that you’ve observed his interactions with coyotes before, but the concern is when he’s alone. If coyotes become more bold, they could test his limits or even wait for an opportune moment to challenge him. Coyote Deterrents - Motion-activated lights, ultrasonic deterrents, or fencing with coyote rollers can make it harder for coyotes to approach your yard. Even installing a tall, secure fence (if not already in place) can be a game-changer. Minimize Attractants - Avoid leaving pet food outside, secure trash bins, and be cautious with smaller pets that could inadvertently attract coyotes closer to your property. Recall and Training - If your Shepherd ever chases a coyote, having solid recall training is crucial. Coyotes have been known to lead dogs into wooded areas where the rest of the pack is waiting. Community Awareness - If more coyotes have been appearing over the past five years, it may be worth checking with local animal control or wildlife organizations to see if there are additional safety recommendations for your area. Your concern for your smaller pets is completely valid, as coyotes see them as easy prey. It’s great that your Shepherd is on alert, but even the best-trained and strongest dogs have their limits when facing an intelligent and coordinated predator like a coyote pack. You’re already doing a lot right by monitoring interactions, but increasing supervision and adding extra deterrents could further ensure your dog’s and your other pets’ safety. Would love to hear updates on how your Shepherd continues to develop! Stay safe, and thanks for bringing up such an important topic.

I have a White German Shepherd called Bellissima who runs my life.! She is a most beautiful dog. If you think I'm being biased, just look at her. (There are pictures of her on my Channel). At first, I was under the illusion that I was in charge. But soon I realized that it was just a fantasy. She wakes up in the morning shaking herself and let me know that she is ready to start the day. After the morning walk, she gives me a look: "Where is my breakfast? Why are you waiting? Move it, and get me my food." And that's just the start of the day....She can communicate so well with her eyes, and let me know whatever she wants. Bellissima is not only beautiful, but also very intelligent. She knows when I put down my reading glasses and pick up my regular eye glasses, it is time for a walk! And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I also noticed that she barks at some older people, not in an aggressive fashion, but more like warning. After consulting with some experts, I became aware that some dogs may bark because they could smell hormonal imbalance in a person that may be related to a long list of health issue. And some dogs have been trained to detect Covid or other health issues better than any blood test.

My second dog was a Ridgeback. In my eyes they are the most beutiful dogs in the world. He got to be 13 years and 11 months old to the day. He was certainly a very stubborn puppy. I still remember the moment when he realised that he would not be able to get he's way He was very upset about that. Even though he was stubborn he really learned quickly. And he was really easy to get house broke. I think he had 3 accidents before he understood that he was supposed to do he's business outside. He's personality was however very different from what you describe as typical. He was not the brave guard dog. He was actually a bit of a coward and a pacifist and a very sweet natured dog. I never had to wory about him chasing wild animals. He just never had any interest in wild life what so ever. So I could always have him off leash in the wild. (He was also in general a very obediant dog, once he had realised that beeing stuborn would not work). I thought that was great. Still he's dad was an active hunting dog and he's mother was trained on blood tracks.

Criminals fear that dog because they haven't ran into my dog lol, i have a Alano Espanol or Spanish war dog, brought to Spain in the 4th or 5th century, fed on human flesh and trained to hunt and kill the natives in their conquest of the Americas, they are a large mastiff type breed that has unlimited stamina, is very agile and can run like a horse. they are a long dog, fairly slender with a long tail that is perfect for balance. Fearless and protective of owner and property they will defend you to the death. They are a dominant breed, rarely suffer from ailments and bred to get along with other dogs, they won't start a fight but they will definitely end one. They are a ancient breed that nearly went extinct. After the conquesting stopped they were used to hunt wild bulls, when that pastime stopped they then ,and still are used to hunt wild boar, mainly by those who want to preserve the breed. They were saved in the late 70's early 80's by two guys who travelled the length and breadth of Spain and found the last remaining 200 dogs and used those as breeding stock. To this day they are still relatively unknown even here in Spain, i've taken my dog to two vets for the compulsory rabies jabs and both vets had no knowledge of the breed and shocked, when i as a British man explain to them the history of a Spanish dog..😅
