I visited Latvia a few years ago expecting it to be a dump reminiscent of the USSR; how wrong I was. The capital, Riga, had obviously prospered under the EU and was doing very well indeed. However, like you, I also do not feel its security is guaranteed. When we look back over many years the negative influence of Russia is likely to reemerge and I wouldn't be surprised if these countries fall back under 'Soviet' rule in our lifetimes, particularly when the true west begins to fail and we all start to experience localised conflicts in our own back gardens. Here is my prediction...civil wars hit Sweden, Germany, Denmark and the UK around 2035 as a growing and stable Russia (aligned with China and North Korea) grab half of eastern Europe in a very short time.

Edinburgh airport used to be lovely. But then, a few years ago, they revamped it so you had to walk through duty free, and then when you exit duty free, you’re in what feels like a shopping mall with the obligatory Sports Direct. I hate the place now, even more so coz I know how nice it used to be. Like with so many things, we’ve sacrificed class for cash.

Edinburgh airport must be the only international airport NOT to have a licensed taxi rank outside the terminal. The ‘taxi rank’ at the airport has been ‘bought’ by an amateur Private Hire Car (mini cabs) firm, which means little to no licensed black cab drivers who know the city inside out, go to that rank…. Its ridiculous, but the greed of the airport has caused this, But… if you want a proper Taxi, just go to the drop off and catch a black cab dropping off passengers and get in one. It’ll work out cheaper and get you to the city quicker.

According to the "life in the UK" booklet which helps people prepare for the exam that will determine if they are allowed to become UK citizens: The UK is a country or a state made of 4 countries. Politically, it is a kingdom, more precisely a parliamentary monarchy, with a constitution that is mostly unwritten. The countries that make the UK have signed an act of Union (latest: Scotland in 1714 or 1715) That is why it is called the UNITED Kingdom. As for the border with Scotland...It is so indeterminate that a whole area is called the Borders :) There is the City of Westminster, the City of London (note the capitals: inner/core districts as you mentioned) and the city of London (no capital): what is considered to be London, though there might be names for different parts (Kensington, Chelsea etc). Same in Paris: l'Ile de la Cite is a part of Paris, note the capital letter. Otherwise, it is ok to say Paris was a Roman city called Lutetia, which reverted to Paris (=home of the Parisi tribe) once the Roman stopped being a colonial power. As for the Union Jack: maybe the contributor who mentions it is only called that at sea is correct. But then, being an island, the Uk is always at sea, and considering the sad state it is in at the moment, it definitely is "all at sea". Happy 2024, love that you are so receptive to acknowledge mistakes, but also do your research: The people aiming to correct you might be wrong themselves.
