As someone coming from a T70 (or maybe it was a T60) from the late 80's, feeling very much overwhelmed by this camera and extremely disappointed that I can't seem to find settings that match the incredible detail of my old life camera.
@JasonPischke5 күн бұрын
There is a quality to film that is hard to duplicate with digital sensors. The R8 has a great sensor, but the highlight roll off and how the shadow detail is rendered is going to be a lot harsher than what you might be use to with your T70. That said, there is a lot of great RF lenses that paired with the R8 will give you a very detailed and pleasing image. I am not sure what lens you are using, but the RF primes and RF L Series glass is going to give you the very best image from the R8

I have the R7 which is a cropped sensor. Would you recommend the 24mm or 35mm for everyday use given the 24mm works as a 35 and 35mm works as a 50?
@JasonPischke14 күн бұрын
I would go 24mm. When I shot with a crop sensor body I started with a 50mm which shot closer to 80mm, way too tight, I switched to 35mm which shot similar to 50mm and still found it tight for a lot of what I was shooting. On full frame, 35mm is probably my favorite focal length just for the versatility of it, 24mm is going to give you that on the R7 and if you upgrade down the line you still have a great 24mm lens for those wider shots!

Thank you sir for explaining in details. I'm just facing a bit problem. I have placed 3d camera text on drone footage. But when i hit playing the video the text is shaking. Not too much but still. I want it to be accurate. Like yours. What should i do?. Sorry for my English..
@JasonPischke17 күн бұрын
Sure thing, it sounds like you either have a bad track, or your text is too close or too far from the tracked point. I would try redoing the camera track and if you still can't get the text to smooth out, try selecting just a single point instead of using 3 points together. Stabilizing the clip before doing the track is also a way to help if you are struggling with jitters. Worst case scenario you can also do a single point motion track and attach the text to that, but I think you should be able to get the camera track to work! Hope that helps!

it's a video about microphone choice that is full of plosives. Not hating - legitimate question: isn't this a reason why other mics that are more forgiving are more often used by streamers and podcasters like sm7b dynamic vocal mics?
@JasonPischke18 күн бұрын
Very valid question, normally you would never position a mic like this so close to the mouth. I only did this for this video to help demonstrate what mic is being used and add some visual’s to the video. Traditionally mic’s like this are positioned above the talent and far enough away that plosives would never be a problem. A second solution if you would want to mount a mic this close to the mouth is use a dead cat or thick windscreen to dissipate any sudden blasts of air that cause these plosive hits. The sm7b and Rode PodMic get around this by using very dense foam in front of the mic capsules to act as pop filters. Hope that helps!!
@conhecedoresconhecerao18 күн бұрын
@@JasonPischke excellent. Thanks, Jason. yes, placing it above the frame pointed at the chest/throat/chin definitely eliminates the plosives. maybe a more awkward permanent home studio setup, but a cleaner on-camera aesthetic. I may just have to play around with some stands and booms now because of this video ;p
@JasonPischke18 күн бұрын
@@conhecedoresconhecerao For sure! It does messy up the off camera experience having a mic stand or boom pole to deal with, but I prefer the cleaner on camera aesthetic. I feel like having the mic in shot, like the SM7B is becoming more mainstream with the popularity of podcasting, it just comes down to personal preference.

Is it loud enough for booming? People says it generate more internal noise compared to another mic
@JasonPischke22 күн бұрын
Where it does a great job is for sit down interviews, pieces to camera and in more controlled environments. A boom mic like the Rode NTG-2 or MKE 600 are going to do better in outdoor run and gun scenarios or as an on camera mic option. I haven’t noticed excess noise compared to other mic’s, I think that probably has more to do with using a high quality field recorder with good preamps. I haven’t plugged this mic directly into a camera so I can’t speak to that.

What lenses or settings and advice would you recommend for shooting videos?
@JasonPischkeАй бұрын
For lenses it really comes down to budget and use case. Prime lenses are going to give you the most quality for the money, but you loose the versatility of a zoom lens. Canon recently released a 28-70mm f/2.8 lens that would make a great all rounder. As far as video advice, I would recommend getting some ND filters or a VND so that you can keep your shutter speed at double your frame rate, this makes a massive difference to how your footage looks and feels. I also have a video on this channel going over Canon Log Profiles and Color Space, that might be helpful if you are trying to get the most out of your R8!
@sabrinhussein3586Ай бұрын
What do you mean by graded? How did you grade this?
@JasonPischkeАй бұрын
Just a basic color grade. I did a color space transform using the provided Apple Log to Rec.709 LUT from their website. Then just basic tweaks to the white balance, HSL and tone curve. I didn’t want to do anything stylized so that you can get a feel for how the footage looks straight out of camera.

have you had any over heating issues? can't decide if I want the r6 or r6 mark ii
@JasonPischkeАй бұрын
Not shooting any of this, and not really about 99.9% of the time. The only time I have run into a heat related issue was shooting 4K24p for about 2 hours back to back. Canon also added IBP Light as a compression method which helps a lot with any heat related issues. In my tests the difference between IPB and IPB Light where so nuance that I mostly shoot IPB Light for the smaller file size. The biggest annoyance of the R6 compared to the R6 MarkII is the imposed 30min record limit. If you are doing interviews, having to cut every 30min is a massive pain.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this lens … I recently purchased the Canon r10 with the RF 50mm f1.8 and I’m wondering between the 16mm or the 28mm which want it will be the best choice to add to my combo… Here a new subscriber from Canada 🇨🇦
@JasonPischkeАй бұрын
I would probably go with the RF 16mm. It is going to give you a very different look compared to the 50mm and I think having lenses that are very different from one another make up the best kit. It is also going to give you a great wide angle lens for capturing big scenes and then pair that with the 50mm for tighter more detail work and that would be a great pairing! Thanks for the sub! Hope that helps!!

hello!can you recommend lenses, that shoot well in the dark?
@JasonPischkeАй бұрын
Any lens that is f/2.8 and wider is going to do pretty well in low light. Primes like this 24 f/1.8 are going to give you even better low light and are a great mix of quality/price. Another factor is lens stabilization, if you are shooting in low light having a stabilized lens and sensor is going to allow you to hand hold a shot for longer and give you better results than a non stabilized lens. That being said, even with fast lenses, stabilized sensors and everything else, shooting with a tripod at night is going to give you the very best results since you can really turn down that shutter speed keeping your ISO low. Hope that helps a little!!

Hi, very nice review, I want to go buy a canon r6 for my canon RP, but I'm still undecided whether it will be great or should I go for the R8, it's the same price now, I just wanted to shoot better stabilized videos, the r6 has cropped 4k video like the RP model, maybe no or ? Another question, do you know if the R6 will work ibis with the Tamron 35 f1.4 lens? it didn't work at first, did the software update in R6 solve this problem?
@JasonPischkeАй бұрын
Thank you for watching! The R6 and R8 both have no crop in 4K 24p and 30p with a slight 1.1x crop in 4K 60p but honestly it’s not noticeable. The RP has a 1.7x crop in 4k for comparison. Both are very capable camera’s but if you want IBIS, the R6 is the way to go. I have never personally used the Tamron 35mm f/1.4 but in my experience the IBIS has worked great with non IS lenses so I don’t see that being a problem!

Are we calling 1600 EUR / USD cameras "budget" these days? Our language is slipping ... And Marketeers are having a field day ...
@JasonPischkeАй бұрын
“Budget” is a relative term. In this video I am talking specifically about the full frame camera market where camera bodies can cost as much as $6,500, so in that context these would be considered budget. There are certainly more affordable options in the APS-C and M43 markets, but this video was aimed at those wanting a full frame camera.
@MrRFastersАй бұрын
@JasonPischke You can invent your own and any language. But in NO language there is something as a "budget" Rolls Royce, a "budget" Ferrari or a "budget" Hasselblad. Nor is the R8 a budget camera. Not in it specs, not in it s functionality nor in its price. It might be the "most bang for your buck" model, but its by no means "budget". As in cheap, limited functionality or low construct.

Hey, great review and great video! Had a quick question for you. For a photographer aiming for professional level, shooting mostly landscape and portrait, and who wishes to start getting into a bit of wildlife slowly but surely, which one would you recommend between the two and why?
@JasonPischkeАй бұрын
Appreciate that! It’s a bit if a mixed bag, for landscape work having the additional 4 megapixels of the R8 would be nice, also the updated DPAF II system is going to be slightly better for portraits work and wildlife. The biggest drawback for me is the ergonomics and battery life, it’s not the end of the world, but having used an R6 I think it feels much better to use and having 2 card slots, bigger battery, better EVF and ergonomics makes it a great all around package. I would see which one you can get the best deal on. Canon has been discounting the R8 very frequently and the R6 prices just keep dropping so I would find the best deal. Both are more than capable of doing professional work. Hope that helps!
