It really enjoyed getting to use it, the size and weight difference even compared to my R6 made brining it with me so easy. The only thing I mentioned and still don’t like is the battery choice, but it’s not a dealbreaker.

Have you tried using the "Touch & drag AF" feature to set focus point? If you set it to relative and right side of the screen (AF menu 4), it lets you use the half of the screen under your right thumb as a track pad to move the autofocus spot while you're looking through the viewfinder. It took me about five minutes to get used to, and it's vastly quicker to nail focus than even using the joystick on the more expensive bodies. As for the controls, I've pretty much moved to shooting Manual + auto-ISO almost exclusively. With AI noise reduction in Lightroom and the superb low light performance on the R8, I have very few qualms about letting the camera boost ISO to what would have been ridiculous levels even two years ago. That lets me use the index finger dial for shutter speed, the top dial for aperture, and the control ring on the lens for exposure compensation. Having another dial would be nice, but it's a perfectly acceptable compromise to get a travel body this small and capable. Honestly the only thing I don't like is the battery life. You give up some of your weight savings by always having to carry two or three spare batteries to get through the day. On the plus side, you can charge in the camera via USB-C so you can get away without hauling along a battery charger assuming you're carrying a spare power pack (which most of us do anyway).

Very good solutions and insight! I used the touch and drag briefly with my R6, but that would be an excellent solution for the lack of physical joystick. I find myself using aperture priority a lot when shooting day to day, leaving ISO set to auto would being a good compromise. The enhanced noise reduction in Lightroom is insanely good, I also felt the high ISO photos I was getting from the R8 were already very clean so it’s a great combo! Appreciate the insight and real world knowledge from someone who has used it for an extended period of time already! Thank you!

As someone coming from a T70 (or maybe it was a T60) from the late 80's, feeling very much overwhelmed by this camera and extremely disappointed that I can't seem to find settings that match the incredible detail of my old life camera.
@JasonPischkeАй бұрын
There is a quality to film that is hard to duplicate with digital sensors. The R8 has a great sensor, but the highlight roll off and how the shadow detail is rendered is going to be a lot harsher than what you might be use to with your T70. That said, there is a lot of great RF lenses that paired with the R8 will give you a very detailed and pleasing image. I am not sure what lens you are using, but the RF primes and RF L Series glass is going to give you the very best image from the R8

What lenses or settings and advice would you recommend for shooting videos?
@JasonPischke2 ай бұрын
For lenses it really comes down to budget and use case. Prime lenses are going to give you the most quality for the money, but you loose the versatility of a zoom lens. Canon recently released a 28-70mm f/2.8 lens that would make a great all rounder. As far as video advice, I would recommend getting some ND filters or a VND so that you can keep your shutter speed at double your frame rate, this makes a massive difference to how your footage looks and feels. I also have a video on this channel going over Canon Log Profiles and Color Space, that might be helpful if you are trying to get the most out of your R8!

which lenses would you suggest for this camera for city photography?
@JasonPischke3 ай бұрын
For this review I shot primarily with the RF 24-50mm, a pretty good lens given the $299 price but it does feel kind of cheap and plasticy in the hand. The 28mm f/2.8 pancake is a fun city lens but you are going to be limited to that 28mm focal length. You can’t go wrong with a 24-105mm if you want versatility. I have shot a lot downtown with that lens and it gives you a ton of range. If you have a little more budget I would highly recommend checking out the RF 28-70 f/2.8. For $1,100 it is a lot of lens!

Canon was going for a small size on the R8, so it makes perfect sense. You just can’t get everything in a single camera body. If you want a larger battery, go for an R6M1 or R6M2.
@JasonPischke6 ай бұрын
Canon is always going to protect their higher end camera’s. Throw in IBIS and an LP-E6 and you have the R6 Mark II. I get it, and it makes sense from a business standpoint but it’s still frustrating haha

Is the rolling shutter bad for occasional family sports and maybe wildlife photography, given the mechanical only has 6 fps?
@JasonPischke6 ай бұрын
I think you will be happy with an R8 for occasional sports and wildlife photography. I didn’t notice the rolling shutter in my shooting with it. The 6fps mechanical is on the slower side, but still very usable in sports and wildlife. If you aren’t shooting something like tennis, golf or something really fast paced, you should be able to get away with using the electric shutter and get 40fps. The autofocus, fast mechanical shutter speed, ergonomics, that all would make it a pretty good sports camera in my opinion.

It is a step up ring for my Kase Magnetic filters. All of the filters I own and use are 82mm and so when I want to use ND or CPL filters on lenses that have a smaller diameter front filter thread, you can purchase step up rings that will change it from 58mm to 82mm 😁

Do Not buy this Camera for video if you live in a climate over 20 degrees, I've been using it for months and it is useless above 20, it is good camera for artic hhah, and when you filming in Clog Battery dies after 10 min!! Yes airplane mode is on... Save your money and time and buy sony fx30 with fan if you are on budget
@JasonPischke27 күн бұрын
Dang, I haven’t had that kind of experience with it. I mainly shoot 30-60 second clips in 4k24 and 4k60 with the occasional 25-30min sit down interview style clip here and there and it worked just fine for all of that. It get’s hotter than the R6, but I didn’t think it was unusable. That said, the FX30 is a great camera and if you primarily do video shooting, it’s not a bad video focused option!
