We’re heading into port, and the pilot boat showed up earlier than scheduled. They woke the bo’sun to get the crew to rig the pilots ladder. However, the bo’sun was impatient and started rigging the ladder alone without fall protection. I don’t know what happened as nobody saw, but he fell overboard. Struggling to swim, he ended up drowning. My belief is that his foot got caught in the rigging, tripped and went over the side still tangled up in the ladder. He then swung into the side of the ship upside down, hitting his head, and then fell into the water. That was a terrible day.
