This is one of the most moving songs I’ve ever heard. I just discovered it a few years ago. The combination of his singing and the piano are pure magic. Barbra Streisand said she went to see him as this is one of her favorite songs. He didn’t sing it and she was heartbroken. It made her realize how important it is to sing fan favorites and how her music could have the same meaning to her fans. After this experience she made sure to include as many as possible when she performs.

Brell was a married man and had an affair with a girl that he was madly in love with. Got her pregnant, and out of embarecement he forced her to have an abortion. She did, later on she hated it andl decided to leave him. That's the song. A masterpiece

There has never been, and there will never be, a better interpretation of this song, no matter what other versions are made. I have never seen an artistic performance as powerful as this man’s dedication-the way he genuinely feels what he’s singing, that desperate smile, and how he almost stops singing to beg, giving the impression that he could break down in tears at any moment. These lyrics are beautiful, but this interpretation is essential.

The way this song conveys the fears of one in love, their helplessness, desires, and pain. I really am going to listen to this masterpiece for as long as I'll live. Jacques brel vocals have profound pain and intensity.. what a legend!

Has a young man when I first heard this. I thought of it has a love song over a sweetheart. I got older, cheaters and alcohol and pain of life. I'm even older now I'm thinking of all the family that raised me and a desperate scream wishing we aren't mortal and they're all dying. It feels like a whimper, a gaspless breath of resistance which was once a roar and how I can't stop it. Time hurts, life is wonderful and I wouldn't stop this ride until I'm thrown off. But fuck what I wouldn't give for just a morning and coffee and smiles again. :) Don't leave me. Don't go away.

so deep that transcends language.... this was where our bright minds were in music decades ago.... deep..theatrical...touching...story telling..quality lyrics...less riffs and runs but more feelings and texture... many years has passed and i keep telling my self..one day..the society will bring back those great magical days..artists will again make real art that talks to hearts without stereotypes...bright lights..and sexy legs... is this a naive mans dream? ... or mayben my generation will only be as a memoery in history.. thank you timeless artists who made this unique moment last forever.. see ya

I don't think it's naive so much as underappreciated by the commercially minded... A lot more people are dissatisfied with social media and there's a high likelihood community live theater will become a kind of social hub in places nationwide because characters of every human type are included in many historic plays from the time of the Greeks. "It's always darkest before the dawn." :) Hope is how the heart resurrects, so don't despair.

…. And I thought Arabic songs reflect the absolute bullshit of begging to live in the shadow of the beloved, even be trodden by them - just for them to see then or smell them!!! This song goes as far as accepting to be reduced to be the shadow of their shadow, or even the shadow of their dog!!! Jeez!!! Please guys: true love healthy is reciprocal. Period!! I’ll accept the fact that this is a true romantic (yes, romanticism is very negative) masterpiece in the lyrics, and first and foremost the performance!!!!
