We enjoyed Caye Caulker a few years back in 2018, it’s certainly worth a visit for the laid back island vibe. Be warned though that at certain times of the year it can have a bad problem with Sargassum, and pretty much the entire island absolutely reeks. It’s impossible to ignore the stench of the rotting seaweed, especially closer to the shore line, it’s sadly enough to make you nauseous and ruins what is otherwise a great place.
@jaydubdiscoveries29 күн бұрын
@@andyb5259 That's a great point. Do you know what time of year sargassum is most likely, or does it depend on the tides?
@andyb525929 күн бұрын
@@jaydubdiscoverieswe encountered it around the middle of November 11th-18th i think. I’ve seen it at different times of the year in other Caribbean locations though. I’ve also heard it can vary a lot depending on the year and how warm the surrounding ocean is - i did a brief search that seemed to indicate it was bad in 2018 and 2019, but not so much in 2020-2021, then back again in 2022-2023 The biggest problem imho was that nobody was taking responsibility for clearing it up (out so it seemed), and in fairness Caulker is small so there would definitely be an issue of what to do with it. But whilst on Ambergris Caye and the various other affected Caribbean destinations, we saw most hotels clean their own beach area and remove the Sargassum, but nobody ever did this on Caulker and it was left to rot and stink. The hotel we stayed in in Caulker was very nice (for a given ‘rustic charm’ value that you get in Caulker 🤣) but despite we were probably 50 yards from the shore, the smell of the sargassum (it’s akin to rotting fish for those who have never come across it before) was enough to make me gag, and genuinely consider immediately leaving the island 🙁(and we would have certainly missed out if we had).

@jaydubdiscoveries5 ай бұрын
@@costtv thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! We didn't get to San Pedro on this trip since we found enough to do on Caye Caulker each day. There are boats that will take you there several times each day, and it was suggested that you get on an early boat if that's something you have time for. San Pedro can easily take up a day or two itself, which is why we decided to save it for our next trip. Enjoy your visit in August!

Spent the last week of February on Caye Caulker for our wedding anniversary and had a fantastic time! Your assessment of the people is right on - they are incredibly kind, warm, and welcoming. And the food is incredible, especially the "street places", but the small neighborhood type restaurants are fabulous as well. Looking forward to going back. HUGE difference between Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye / San Pedro. CC's island motto of "Go Slow" is great. Great video review! Cheers!

The T-casual for Zone 1, currently €11.35 online for 10 journeys looks to be way more value than the Hola Barcelona cards. Only advantage of the Hola, is it allows travel on the airport metro. I’m arriving into town from Madrid by rail and leaving by air but with a lot of luggage so will be taking the train from Sants Station. Even if I buy 20 journeys for 4 full days exploring, it’s still cheaper than the 48H Hola.

Is there a lot of taxis on the streets? Amazing video😍
@jaydubdiscoveries Жыл бұрын
That's a great question! I honestly don't remember seeing any taxis. If you're not able to walk fort long periods of time, there are tour buses that can get you around, both inside and outside the city.
@Rosa-fc3yw3 ай бұрын
@Rosa-fc3yw3 ай бұрын

Do u recommend driving to Toledo?
@jaydubdiscoveries Жыл бұрын
I haven't made the drive, so it's hard for me to compare driving vs taking the train. I did notice a fairly large parking garage while I was there, so you surely could drive there and find a place to park. What I would NOT recommend is trying to drive IN Toledo once you arrive: the streets are very narrow, mostly filled with pedestrians, and it is easy to get lost. A car would come in very helpful driving around the permitter of the city, though, and there are places to pull off to the side and enjoy the views.
