I think the freedom many Americans seek is freedom from other people. There are, in my opinion, many millions of Americans who just do not like other people. Maybe their family members and friends get a pass. They are misanthropes.

The idea that you will escape death, whether bodily or spiritually, comes from a place of narcissism in us. One of the pernicious side effects of thinking you are destined for immortality comes in politics. Machiavelli said that the religious person should not get involved in politics, because they believe the earth, our planet, is mortal. But they believe they are immortal. So they don’t care about this world and what happens in it and what happens to other people.

I find it very appropriate that a philosopher would preach (in a church) that freedom is the ability to make a choice between one virtue or another, in given circumstances. Freedom is NOT chaos.

I pause at the 30 min mark . We who are boomers , I'm 68 now think of my dad's simple life , I have expanded on that, not with a material sense of getting stuff . Mr McCullough explains that with the vacation comment . But , reading and watching and listening to video's such as this , or his books or anything that enlightens me , over entertains me . Adams in his latter years could not get in a car a drive from MA to VA to visit Jefferson, or pick up a phone , or face time each other. With all we have in 2025 to connect on a moments notice , we are more disconnected with ourselves and each other. At least then one could be alone and write in a journal or letter to connect . More effort , than today . Adams and Jefferson would be sad how people waste time in 2025 . I see both at each others home , but we have there letters because of that time period. Its amazing how writing gives oneself something to the mind as exercise gives to the body .

Can Donald Trump's myopic intelligence truly be called intelligence, or is his lack of empathy and indifference to the full range of emotions a feature or a flaw? Many contend that this flaw is pathologic. it cannot be denied that Trump has embraced all of the flaws of America and has not only excelled in their toxicity but has also embraced it for economic, personal and political gain. Some might term this Machiavellian, others sadism, while still others have termed this psychopathy. So, wouldn't this feature of his intelligence be best described as if evil-genius; conversely, would a criminal mastermind be the best choice for the most powerful position of leadership in the world? It cannot be denied that there is a great deal of ignorance present in his words and deeds, a self-defeating aspect, what some might consider self-destructive. Surely, this aspect of his psyche cannot be considered as intelligent unless all tyrannts throughout history are praised only for their ability to control others and not for their fields of wrath. Many have closed their eyes to his war-like toxicity and his disdain for heath and wellfare. Surely, this cannot be viewed as intelligence especially when history may easily look back on these times with shame and despair, as a time of barbarism and human indifference. Intelligence can be measure by outcomes, but the consequences of his actions are often measured in cascading virulence, more conflict and harm than rational unity, more indicative of a deficit of executive functioning than of wisdom. True, he must not be underestimated as his influence can be malicious but he can never accept his need for change nor take responsibility for the harm he causes, a blindness to both reason and reality. This might be viewed as the opposite of intelligence, as a negation of both truth and responsible freedom.

Hey real Americans. Phony patriots of maga despise their fellow Americans. Probably worse the way they talk. The same fellow Americans paying to pave their roads, pay to build and repair their bridges, pay for their public libraries and schools, and supplying their welfare benefits. Let’s not buy anything made or grown in red states. Have a dry trump presidency. Or get wine from CA or Liquor not produced in a red state. Don’t buy flooring, it comes from GA, MTG’s district to be exact. Buy American but not if it’s made in a red state. No peanuts. Eat almonds and pistachios instead. Literally let’s boycott maga where it really hurts. Let them get their karma they wish onto their fellow Americans who’ve been supporting their failed red states for more than 4 decades. We may not be able to stop paying for building their bridges, fixing their roads, send their kids to school and paying for their welfare and SSI but we can stop supporting these ungrateful users in other ways. Let them pick themselves up by their bootstraps and see how self sufficient they become. They wanted to hurt their fellow Americans. Let maga reap what they’ve sown. Boycott maga. Spread this message.

How he reveals the falsity of "common sense" phrases like "the fall of the Wall" or "preaching to the choir" (is bad) with such simplicity reveals how something is wrong in a way that is so obvious once he says it that a simpleton could think he is uttering platitudes. He is not. It takes a very bright mind to see which obvious lessons we are clearly missing (Germany was not built in peace only but first hard-fought defeat) and then make them understandable to a wide audience.

The way he answered the nastily put preaching to the choir question, clearly meant to "trap" him, in a church, was pure excellence. A perfect example of how TS can state something plainly with a clear moral compass . Too many on the so-called left are so invested in their "it's all good" relativity that they don't know their head from their hands.

“These are the times in which a genius would wish to live. It is not in the still calm of life, or the repose of a pacific station, that great characters are formed. The habits of a vigorous mind are formed in contending with difficulties. Great necessities call out great virtues. When a mind is raised, and animated by scenes that engage the heart, then those qualities which would otherwise lay dormant, wake into life and form the character of the hero and the statesman.”

People often forget, that without some of the values like the values that Timothy mentions: - Altruism, Compassion, Creativity, Curiosity, Empathy, Forgiveness, Integrity, and Justice are extremely important. These are the things which make us human. I do agree that we have to learn about ourselves, by comments of others. Two ears, one mouth! Listen more than you speak. I spent six years exploring myself, and now I can actually say who I am in many different aspects. Timothy thank you! The distinction between positive and negative freedom has been made multiple times by many Western philosophers. In fact one can easily pinpoint to Aristotle and even Jesus Christ himself for proper references. It is truly astonishing how certain audiences fold in front of a person who is adept at reinventing the wheel 10 times over and passing it for profound wisdom. Incredibly overinflated blather.

I don't know who this interviewer is, but he seems to have trouble grasping basic concepts that prof. Snyder is explaining. I am part of the "choir", I agree with his ideas, but I still need and want to hear his words, often, because lots of things he says are not things that I have thought about in those same ways. So even if we're preaching to the choir, there will always be things we can say that give others new ideas and new angles on things. The fact that maybe the "other side' doesn't want to hear those things makes no difference . We still need new ideas and new words to talk about them, that's how the discourse evolves and changes society eventually, according to whose ideas are more viable.

@@olasylvia1 I agree! It is a thing. In Germany it is an uphill battle to get people to even say "Russia invaded" due to a deep compulsion to "both sides" everything to the point of complete moral vacuity. It is endlessly frustrating for those of us aware that just saying "We want peace" will not protect anyone if we allow the wall between Putin and the EU to crumble.

I’m more than a little suspicious of anyone who would claim to be a “little sad” that their book remains on the bestseller list. More to the policy point, though, I’m also suspicious of those who believe that they.(and those who think like them) are in sole possession of “the truth.” Not only does this result in a lack of nuance and humility, it can also lead to a combative defensiveness when confronted with challenging questions.

@@olasylvia1 Please, his reference right up front about "disinformation", "climate change," racism and the failure to further fund welfare and health care is done with not just paper thin but zero analysis. Then there's his reference to the "idiocies" of others and need for "truth" at 26:00. Look, I understand the human proclivity for 'truthtellers' and gurus. For me, it's Alan Watts.
