In his book 'Stamped from the Beginning', the Black academic Ibram X. Kendi chronicles the story of racist ideas and their staggering power over the course of American history. Racist thinking does not arise from ignorance or hate, he argues, but rather have been used to defend discriminatory policies and to rationalize the nation’s racial inequalities from wealth to health, and everything in between. His narrative offers a window on to the contentious debates raging on this issue in the United States and was awarded the National Book Award.
Now, his book has been turned into a Netflix documentary by the Academy Award-winning director Roger Ross Williams. It will premiere at IDFA later in the week. After hearing from Kendi about his work and its impact, Roger Ross Williams and Mara Brock Akil, the executive producer of the documentary, will join the conversation.
This video was recorded at the OBA on Nov 13, 2023.

1:13:09 Let me get this straight; my identity, as a white person is shaped by constructions of whiteness. Whiteness is a construction that is disconnected from humanity. 1. What the hell is “whiteness”, and what are it’s constructs? 2. Swap out any other race for “white” and “whiteness” above and read how ignorant and racist this comes off. 3. I can’t help but feel like this is divisive verbal diarrhea (for instance, “Being overweight is shaped by constructions of obesity. Obesity is a construction that is disconnected from humanity.”). This is speaking without saying anything (albeit, he does it very well…there is no substance). Lastly, lets just assume that his earlier claim about President Lincoln is true and that his motivation behind the Civil War was not to end slavery but something more subterfuge that benefits white laborers. Lets agree that all of President Abrahams speeches were lies to mislead the public at large in order to bolster support. Over 2 million American took the bait and enlisted under the false narrative they were given and enlisted to fight and abolish slavery. 360,222 of those 2 million Americans (that is nearly a quarter of the entire military) laid down their lives for the cause. Albeit they were supposedly lied to, they still risked and gave up their lives to eradicate a practice they considered inhumane. There is beauty in that, and there is a sacrifice that deserves acknowledgement and honoring. Without it, the world is a far less beautiful place and history has a greater chance of repeating itself. If it does, mind you there may not be enough selfless people in America willing to make that ultimate sacrifice who, according to Mr. Kendi are disconnected from humanity because their whiteness. I find this an unsettling and disparaging thought.

I know it's hard to hear and even acknowledge the horrific strategies White Americans crafted and participated in to lay down the deep roots of white supremacy. White supremacy ideologies were taken from Europe and re-birthed on American soil. One thing about the truth is it does not shape shift or change over time. The truth remains the same, unaltered and long after you and I leave this world the "construct of whiteness" will remain. He is only telling the truth that was hidden, and packed away due to shame.
