I know this video is old but at 12:13 you just snap that extra piece on - that's what I'm struggling with right now, that piece is hanging on by a thread and I don't know how to secure it any better - how is it designed to fit?
@restotime3923 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for watching, to be honest it doesn’t really snap into place without the panel being fitted to the door first, it snaps into place once on the door. It really isn’t a great design in my opinion.

what's that cement's name ?
@MichaelAMangone Жыл бұрын
With contact cement, you can lightly spray with isopropyl alcohol to allow a medium to slide the vinyl into place. However, when I do this, I use 3M's 77 product. I line up the whole skin onto the frame, trace the desired location onto the frame and spray both parts of one corner, clip it in place like you did and start working towards the other side. That gives you workable adhesive where you need it and a form anchor where it's already lined up.

Hello and thank you for this video. How long did it last ?

Hello, its still holding quite well, it’s lifted in one section but its an easy fix, the main section of the vinyl is still holding well though

What kind of adhesive is good to hold the inserts in place, the place that I paid to have them put back on had them on, but eventually all inserts just came off.
@restotime392 Жыл бұрын
I used a two part glue that gets applied to both mating surfaces, let it sit for about 20 minutes and then apply them together, its held up pretty well since. Some parts it has lifted a little unfortunately but for the most part its still very good
@giraulty2 жыл бұрын
Nice mate ! I have to do it for my e34 too... what type of glue are you using in this vioeo?
@restotime3922 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, i forget the name but its a two part blue, if you’re in Australia it’s available from Bunnings. You spread it on both mating surfaces, let it sit for about 10 minutes and then apply them together and it holds really well. Just make sure the area the glue goes on is as clean as possible to ensure good adhesion

This is not actual restoration. This is shining a tool in good condition. The previous handle was more functional because it was oval and oval handles do not turn in your hand. It is now in a worst operational condition than before the "restoration ". Sorry.

I wasn't sure about painting the head, but it does look very nice. You should have used a wedge on the handle though, instead of all that epoxy. It will be very difficult to remove the handle in the future, if you ever need to. Also, you might have considered restoring the handle as well. Depending on the age of the hammer, it might have been a nice old-growth piece of wood that was stronger than the new handle.
@restotime3922 жыл бұрын
I definitely considered those options and I’m glad I’m not the one thinking that too. I thought id try my hand at making a handle from scratch on the wood lathe. Im glad you like the end result though, feel free to check out my other restoration videos too 🙂

Great result, especially since you kept the original vinyl. However some details are hard to finish around the edges and bizarrely shaped areas because of the shrinked vinyl. I fear the glue won't stop the vinyl from continuing to shrink and that it will end up looking as before despite all you hard work
@restotime3922 жыл бұрын
Gald you like the video. The glue that I used is quite strong so it should hold very well. Unfortunately there is no “like new” fix to this that im aware of. The only other option would be to get the series 2 doors where they hardly have this problem. I have had the doors like this for a few months now and no issues as of yet 😄

Перед снятием винила с карты, надо было греть феном, чтобы винил принял форму карты, только потом отклеивать и клеить по новой. Я так уже делал, трудоёмко, но результат лучше.

Im glad the video can help, one thing i can recommend is when you take the vinyl off make sure the surface on the back and the cardboard is clean so the glue adheres as good as it can. Ive had both my rear doors done as seen in the video for a few months now and they are still in great shape

Two things. 1- I was really surprised there was no kind of lubricant or rust protection in that housing when you got into it, and somewhat surprised you didn't use any when restoring. Maybe it's not needed, I'm not an expert. 2- Knowing those shifters as intimately as I do, there was a lot more chrome and less black originally. Now, that is personal preference when restoring, so don't read too much into it. You did a great job restoring it and I'd be tickled pink if I bought a vehicle that someone went to those lengths on something like that piece in my car. Really fine work. You should be proud of the results!

Thank you Greg, yeah i was surprised too to be honest, i just wanted to restore it to how it looked when i got it i guess. The hardest part was getting the button to work properly as I was unable to source a new spring for actuating mechanism. I want my channel to aim to show how to restore things using basic tools and methods to show people what they are capable of. I really appreciate the kind words though, I will be coming out with two new videos shortly both on car parts as well so stay tuned 😎😎🎬🎬
