My First KZbin Restoration Video.
This is an old panel beating hammer my grandfather gave to me many years ago that I have had sitting around that I decided to restore and make better. In this video you will see me not only restore this 1960’s Panel Beating Hammer, but I will also modify it slightly by making a brand-new timber handle for it out of Redgum timber which has a cherry red colour to it.
I use a variety of tools in the video to make the restoration easier but I try to use the simplest tools to show you what you can do with simple tools.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS:
I remove the old timber handle from the hammer head by placing the head in a vice and using a punch tool to push the old handle free. The nail that held the handle to the hammer head came out with the handle as it didn’t require much persuasion. I then proceed to use a bench drill with a wire wheel to remove any visible rust and all old paint on the hammer head and bring it too bear metal. After that I then begin the long process of filing down all the rough castings on the hammer and also making it more symmetric as the castings where not cantered. I then file the old casting symbols to make it a nice smooth surface.
I then use an etch primer out of an aerosol can to lay a good mating surface for the black enamel paint to promote adhesion to the metal hammer head. Allowed to dry for 48 hours, then the timber handle is inserted with a two part epoxy glue which dries very quickly. A wedge is placed in the opening where the handle goes into the hammer to spread the timber so it cannot be removed.
The hammer is restored and complete.
Disclosure:
I am not sponsored by any of the tools that I use in this video, however I do recommend them.
