You talk about wedding photography like it’s similar to being a war photographer in an active combat zone. Listen, some of your points were good, but most of it was very naive. Many photographers have shot weddings using one lens, some just to prove a point that people who say you need a series of lenses and camera bodies is asinine. Shooting anything, be it weddings, street, events, or whatever should be left to the photographer on how best to approach it. Too many KZbinrs follow the same mantra of “you need this or that,” when truth be told, we forget that there was a time when photographers only had a single fixed lens and a film camera to make the shots happen. And they made it happen better than most photographers today with modern technology. The key factor for knowing what to use is to understand what you want to capture and how. If you don’t know, and require KZbinrs and influencers to tell you, then you have not shot enough. Master a focal length first before deciding on spending tons of money on lenses you’re never going to regularly use. Get a general purpose prime or zoom, just one, and shoot the hell out of it. Become so good with it that you can’t help but see the world in that focal length. Once you reach that point, you will see and utilize the full potential of that one lens and body to capture breathtaking photos. Otherwise, you can have all the gear in the world but your photos will be nothing more than generic and bland. Just because you can take a picture doesn’t make you know how to capture a photo.

So if you are starting out, get first body and 24-70, then second body and either 35 or 85. Now you have at least one backup if one camera or lens breaks. Then later get the other 85 or 35.

Who said I never owned a Sigma Art prime? I have pretty much all of them (24, 35, 50, 85, 135, etc.) and have tried them at weddings, but didn’t find them practical (still think zoom lenses are more practical for weddings)- until I compared them on a wedding day and decided I wanted to put in the effort for my couples 🤍

Prime lenses are for photographers. Zoom lenses are for lazy photographers. But seriously the reason I continue to only use primes are some of the reasons you listed: low light performance, sharpness, color depth, size, and weight. 35mm, 55(50 is more common)mm, 85mm is all you really need for a wedding.
@mjcarneiro
@mjcarneiro Ай бұрын
I wouldn’t say that! 🫤 I still very much love my zooms and will use them to make my life easier. If that makes me a lazy photographer, then so be it, as long as I’m still giving my best and providing my couples with the best experience and photos they’ll love 💗✨ But yeah, the prime lenses you listed are basically the only ones you’ll need on a wedding day, and I’ve been loving this combo! officially a prime biiiiitttc 😝🤝💅

I've had an unusual experience with this. I was originally team zoom, then I went all in on primes (24mm and 50mm), but I found this a bit restricting. I picked up the new Sigma DG DN II 24-70 and now it lives on my second body - which is crazy sharp btw. A big step up from the mark 1 version and significantly lighter. So I'm shooting a 50mm 1.4 Sony GM on main body, then a 24-70 Sigma on my second body. But I find myself using the 50mm less and less. I'm thinking of picking up more zooms tbh - I think the 70-180 Tamron would pair nicely with the 24-70 for some parts of the day when you need that extra reach and that incredible compression at the long end. I think there's a place for both zooms and primes tbh. As always, thanks for the vid
@mjcarneiro

It’s definitely restricting-sometimes I wish I had my zoom because it’s so much more practical. But again, I’m willing to put in the extra effort for my clients if it means the images will turn out more beautiful 🤍 My main combo was the 24-70 and 85, and it worked so well! The 70-200 is nice too, but I think the 85mm is just chef’s kiss 😝✨💗 Thanks for watching and supporting my baby channel 🤍

I am about to try starting out with weddings. I only have one camera body and am hoping it with my 24-70 2.8 will be good enough until I can afford a second body! I also own a 35mm 1.4 and a macro 90mm 2.8. I just would have to switch lenses when I absolutely need them! I'm thinking possibly the 35mm for reception since it can go down to f/1.4.
@mjcarneiro

Are you going to be second shooting or lead shooting? I’d say, if you’re shooting weddings on your own, a second camera body is a must as backup, because things can go wrong and you want to make sure you’re fully prepared to capture someone special day. Would you consider renting one? But I’d say you can use your 24-70mm all day 🤍 but definitely invest in a flash for the reception- you don’t want to rely on ambient lighting only :) I actually have a video on how to use flash for weddings and how to second shoot weddings. Have a look if you’d like, I’m sure it will help you feel more prepared 🫶

I will DEFINITELY check out you're video thank you!! I only have one camera body and will get another when I can afford one but I will probably Need to shoot at least a wedding or two before I can!
