Film wedding photographer here! 🙋 Good info, but I do have to push back on a couple of points. 1:50 as a film photographer since 2003 and a film wedding photographer since 2008, I really hate the word 'trend' associated with film. More so because that's how the price of film and film cameras go through the roof. As Anna Wintour said, "trend is dirty word." 2:00 I wouldn't panic our contemporaries with this point, only because couples who want their wedding photographed on film, will specifically reach out to photographers who use film almost exclusively. That's where SEO comes in. So no, I doubt the average 'digital' wedding photographer will see any decline in bookings. 2:20 One of the biggest misconceptions of using analog cameras is that this or that brand will give you better photos. With film, it has more to do with lenses than with the camera. In other words, all point & shoots will give you the point & shoot look, be it an Olympus Lite, a Kodak disposable or Contax T3, they will all give you the exact same look. When others ask for camera recommendations, I simply direct them to the same camera brand of lenses they already have. Assuming they didn't go all in on mirrorless lenses. That said, 120 is the way to go if you really want your film photos to stand out. However, my clients seldom order anything larger than an 8x10, so 135 is plenty good for me. 4:15 IF and only IF you have a lab you absolutely trust, you can send them any film stock and they will make it look how ever you want it to look. After all these years of working in camera shops and photos labs, I realized buying 'pro' film is a waste of money. In all my life I have only purchased three Portra pro packs. All my weddings are photographed on "cheap" consumer film. 4:49 For beginners, I strongly recommend you expose your film at 'box speed' and have the lab develop and scan 'normally' or neutral. This way, you can learn how that specific stock reacts to the lens you have slapped on you camera as well as see your mistakes along the way. Outside of that, exposing film as neutral as possible gives you WAY more flexibility in editing. Don't under or over expose your film. 8:10 100% as much as I hate to admit it, advertising that you use film to photograph weddings is a very good marketing strategy. HOWEVER! In my case since I'm super niched down, I don't get flooded with inquiries, even less with bookings. That said, after my rebranding to The Drunk Wedding Photographer a year ago, I have been able to charge a little bit more to offset the drop in inquires, only because I use 35mm film and the first impression of my wacky brand name with potential clients.

wow amazing input, David! Thanks for sharing a little bit of your knowledge! I'm definitely still learning (always learning), and this is how I started and everything I shared was based on my own experience. But every photographer is different and every experience is unique. I absolutely know what you mean by not loving the word 'trend' haha, but we have to admit it's definitely becoming more and more popular among couples getting married, and I see more and more photographers starting to offer film as well. But I promise I'll try to avoid the word 'trend' for you hehe Like I mentioned, I have had many enquires asking about film photography, and have heard from many couples that booked with us that one of the reasons why they decided to go ahead with us was because we also offered film. So I absolutely think that offering film give us a good advantage. Again, this is my experience. Btw I absolutely love your work!

@@mjcarneiro Girl! tell me about! Even after years of doing this I still feel like a noob. Just the other day I forgot to take spare batteries for my Nikon N75 and it pooped out after a few frames. I was too lazy to switch lenses, so I just photographed most of the elopement with a 24mm attached to the other N75. Sometimes I even put an exposed roll back into the camera thinking it's fresh. Rookie move. And I only mention my disdain for the word 'trend' simply because I don't like to work with clients who include things into their wedding because it's trendy. I'm of the mindset of doing things because it means something to you and not because it's something everyone else is doing on TikTok or some celebrity did it or simply because it's tradition. Those who follow trends are usually the ones I call 'normie' clients. You know, the average 9-5 work schedule which includes big channel KZbinrs too, lol. And before rebranding, my client base was nothing but normies and since most followed what was hot at the moment, their photos already look outdated, making my work look outdated as well. Stark contrast to clients who work in creative fields who do things their way, and by photographing it on film, you can really stretch those photos for a cool minute. I should add that after rebranding, I've been very lucky to work with clients who one half is a creative. So naturally, they gravitate towards film photography because they appreciate the workmanship that goes behind it. Only twice have I worked with clients in which both bride and groom were creatives.And guess what!? They were the only clients I have worked with that had unlimited Mezcal at the open bar. They know what's up! But hey! Don't listen to me, I'm just an opinionated drunk. Anyway, thank you for the compliment. I love what you're doing, I always appreciate a fresh perspective when it comes to analog photography be it for weddings or not. Looking forward to future videos. ✨

What is box speed? :) does that mean if the film is 400, your iso should also be 400?

When you change the iso speed to half the box speed, does that mean you are pulling? Do you tell the lab to develop it accordingly or just develop it normally?
@mjcarneiro
@mjcarneiro 20 күн бұрын
Set the iso to half the box speed, then expose to +1 on the camera, and ask the lab to develop it normally. I find that the photos come out more clean ;)

First of is what film to use and to get this developed as there is an awesome amount of old camera equipment all perfectly good is purchased from a reputable dealer. Second is the form factor used whether 35mm (most common) or 2 inch/2×2. The latter makes the most sense for this type of "art" basically...but kodachrome film was such a game changer back in the day and so much performance be had from said cameras for a beginniner anyways 35mm makes by far the most sense for "going there" and yes you are "going there" with this type of approach as it is so incredibly demanding even for a beginner and even using a niche setting.
