The problem is the cpu. While an AMD Ryzen 7 5825u can be used for Jellyfin, it's not considered the best choice due to limitations in its integrated graphics, which are not optimized for hardware acceleration compared to Intel CPUs, especially when transcoding multiple streams simultaneously

8:54 thank you for including power draw - so many dont include it, and with energy prices as they are here, it matters a lot because of that, ive been thinking of using a mac mini as a homelab. it sounds quite dumb but the M chips have extremely low power draw, it comes with 10gbe, and the thunderbolt ports provide 3x pcie 3x4 on the low end, and 3x pcie 4x4 on the higher end (though thunderbolt 5 adapters dont exist yet since its so new). the main problem would be software, but as far as i was able to tell, macos supports docker & vms, and most homelab-level software already supports arm due to raspberry pis... if you were up for it id love to see a video trying to implement this - but i understand if its cost-prohibitive/simply not something youre interested in.

Maybe their paste was not the worst there is. It may be the same stuff used by most other vendors. It may have also dried out over time. A lot of factory paste is OK for most people but the ones who know that it dries out sooner or later know what to do when it runs hotter than normal

Who runs a homelab nowadays? Just spin up everything you need to in one of the 'clouds'. Automate your build processes and keep rotating throwaway gmail addresses so you don't ever need to pay for it.

Its always nice to watch your videos, i always get new knowledge. And i have some questions about building a NAS, i have 0 knowledge, buying a ready made NAS like ASUSTOR/Synology is too expensive for me. I watched some videos but still have some questions in mind. I hope someone can answer. 1. Can NAS that use TrueNAS be accessed from outside? i mean i travel alot and i hope i can access to my NAS from anywhere anytime 2. Is it possible to make each account have their own folder and can only access to their own files? 3. My MiniPC only have 1x M.2 Slot and 1x SataIII Slot. So i plan to use USB3.2 Flashdrive as boot and M.2 as main storage, is there a way to automaticly mirror/backup M.2 to sata HDD?

There are SFF PSU that can replace the Dell unit. Cosair and Apevia make them...like the Apevia ITX-PFC400W Mini ITX/Flex or Apevia 500w SFX power..They also open up the space needed to use the X16 slot so a 2 slot powered GPU can be used...Ok power draw will increased of course..but make for a decent basic gamer/emulator if nothing else.

Fantastic idea. But for an additional 60 dollars you could have added internal drive bay cages and used Supermicro hot swap caddies? That would make replacing a bad drive much easier.

Turion II was common in laptops which is why you didn't recognize it. It was never a desktop chip and this is also why you don't need the 4pin power. Those chips came from a pretty decent time in the laptop market so for the time period they were performance chips. This would have been around the time the FX chips launched for desktop so you would have had some older desktop chips like the phenom line as well as the newer gen FX and on the laptop side we had turion II and athlon x2 etc worked on thousands of them back in the day.

i used to use dd-wrt in the past but took the plunge into the unifi deep end with a udm pro (which led to a couple u6 lites and a usw 16 poe lite), and now am setting up a second site (family office) with a ucg ultra and its nice when everything in the ecosystem is unifi and all meshes together nicely. ubiquiti is starting to put out good hardware for pretty cheap, not saying the the rackmount poe switches are that cheap, but the plastic body lite switches are good value for money.

If small physical size is required, that is a good deal. I created some touchscreen info kiosks at an observatory. Had a hidden PC driving a touchscreen monitor. Only external requirement was power. Used a desktop PC inside a custom cabinet.

Judging by your age, no wonder you never heard of HP dv8000 that had that pesky turion CPU that heated AF making it hot plate and causing solder problems, back then i've reballed far too many dv8000 to count and i've hated that cpu and HPs that used them

Nice, I had an i3 NUC that I gave away due to only having a single NVME drive slot. I'm surprised that your i5 model has space for an additional SATA drive, so it is possible to be used as a proper Proxmox cluster node with a RAID1 mirror. Sweet!

I have a 15 bay rackmount case 4u that I have filled with drives, a mix of 4TB and 12TB drives and I want to add more than these 15, I dont want a second server and I dont want to have to just upgrade storage per drive. This is built on an AM4 board so server grade disk shelves seem hard to expand into another case are hard. Are there any suggestions anyone has for me?

Hey, I love your videos. It inspired me to get my first owned server. I followed one of your guides on here, I have crafty, casaos and home assistant. I'm struggling with Emby as a media provider. According to some threads its to do with permissions for Emby to view the folders in the Home Dir. Do you know how to do this? I can't seem to find a guide that is easy to follow. I'm using Ubuntu and Emby installed. Just can't direct to the home folders where the files will be stored.

Well done on DIY concept for cage for extra drives! Too bad you didn’t find a system with the easy swapping adapter for installing and removing the hard drives. Attach the adapter to the drive and click into place then wiring on the back. All with a cost I suppose.
