I salvaged 4 HP prodesks from work. Tiny little PCs with 7th gen i5 cpus... I'm out of ideas on what to use them for! I already run two Dell poweredge servers so all my VMs run on them.

That display issue reminded me of all fancy problems with XFree86 back in the day. A lot of evenings spent trying to get that to behave with the unusual setup I had at the time. Though it was due to number of different displays each having different specs and each being little less well documented than the previous (I think there was site called monitorheaven or some such at the time that listed a lot of vertical and horizontal refresh rates for good number of displays at the time, but it doesn't exist anymore unfortunately and then again, monitors of today aren't as finicky anyway due to DDC/CI. Glad it's quite rare to run into these weird fringe cases nowadays, but dealing with them can still be a challenge unfortunately(though personally I find it easier to deal with them by just trying to set the graphics system config right from CLI rather than from GUI which might behave oddly due to poor defaults). Those serial ports look interesting. Could probably all kinds of fancy projects with those.

12:54 for anyone out there looking for a low power x64 as a firewall: lack of AES-NI is a simple showstopper for any CPU. Compare J1900 with AMD GX-412: the latter is a nail compared to J1900, but as firewall, Sunnyvale obliterates Santa Clara. For anyone looking for something "new and different" as firewall distro, consider to take a look to NethSec. It's green, openwrt based but.. Might have some potential

The usage of these types of machines don't require much processing power or RAM...they're just a dummy terminal for the most part. I have an old POS system that was in the grill area of a local McDonalds for many years....the only issue with it was it was caked in grease and grime LOL. It worked fine otherwise, they just upgraded to newer systems and got rid of the old stuff.

Haiku would be an Light Desktop OS to tinker about with this kind of old and limited Hardware, Realtek nics are no problem there, give it a try for the Garage PC 💻 and Haiku

I've worked for mc donald for 1year here in France, and with one of my manager friend, we were the "tech ppl" he explaned to me how every pieces of the network system was terifing with both very outadated specs, missused features and prices of top of the line hardware, for exemple we had a tablet in one room tha was powered by 2x 100mb/sec poe that could scan NFS's in a whole small room, all of the OSs where proprietary super locked often just connecting to remote server for basic function, and what was not using proprietary OS just had windows XP and was still remoting on firm's server

That screen cutoff sounds like a vblank issue. Any competent VGA monitor will let you adjust that manually. I have no idea how good your converter is and since modern monitors no longer accept analogue inputs you're out of luck there. Maybe there is a config buried somewhere in the depths of Linux and the default is different than what Windows does? Additionally, be aware that VGA (or more accurately QXGA over a VGA cable) has a max. resolution of 2048*1536 but that only works if you have a really good cable. And sometimes your OS will have a different opinion on what VGA can do. In any case you're probably right in not spending more time on this issue. Unless you have a monitor with a VGA input it'll be a pain to get this working.

that would be a great signal k host signal k is a marine software that gathers data from radar, sonar, AIS... those serial com ports would be handy, since most of the devices in a boat have them although nowadays it all connects via wifi, the serial is more reliable on storms and busy marinas..

I actually own one of those Classico cases, I have my primary NAS in it. I managed to pick it up for something like $50 US. It's not great by modern standards, but compared to the cases I worked in back in the day, it's amazing. I do wish there was a bit more room in the back of the case, but I managed to make it work. Definitely a "get what you pay for" type case, but I'm satisfied with it for what I paid.

Honestly, this would make a great little PC for light home server tasks like pihole and home assistant like you said. And getting that mini PCIe to m.2 is huge. I also like the idea of using the COM ports for serial applications. Maybe if you could break them out into DB-9 you could make this into a silent retro gaming PC using some old hardware like flight sticks. I'm sure you could get something running DOSbox well on this.

Hey dude, I noticed the serial ports are an RJ-45 port. You could probably use it to control those Cisco-esque console ports, using an RJ-45 straight through, as a terminal server. Just a suggestion.
